North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 87, Article 4 (the Electrical Contractors Licensing Law) governs electrical contracting to protect public life, health, and property.
Scope Electrical contracting is defined as installing, maintaining, altering, or repairing electrical wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment. Any person, firm, or corporation engaging in—or offering to engage in—electrical contracting in North Carolina must hold a valid state license. The license requirement applies to the contracting business entity itself, not individual workers.
The Licensing Board The NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC) administers exams, issues licenses, enforces rules, and disciplines violators. Licenses are divided into classifications—Limited, Intermediate, Unlimited, and Residential Dwelling—based on the type and financial value of work performed.
Code Compliance and Enforcement A license does not exempt a contractor from local ordinances or national electrical and building codes. Violations of Article 4—such as contracting without a license or failing to pull required permits—may result in disciplinary action, civil penalties, or injunctions issued by the Board.
