The Oklahoma Electrical License Act (Title 59, Chapter 40A, Sections 1680–1697 of the Oklahoma Statutes) is the state law governing the electrical trade and its licensing requirements. Its primary purpose is to protect the public by ensuring that electrical construction work is performed safely by qualified professionals.
Administration and Enforcement The Construction Industries Board (CIB), working alongside the Committee of Electrical Examiners, is responsible for administering and enforcing the Act. This includes overseeing testing, licensing, and continuing education requirements for electrical professionals.
License Types - Electrical Contractor: Plans, manages, and carries out electrical installations. This license is required to legally operate an electrical business. - Journeyman Electrician: Performs hands-on installation, repair, and maintenance work under the appropriate certification. - Electrical Apprentice: A registered learner who works under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman electrician or contractor.
Exemptions and Rules The Act does not apply to minor repairs, such as replacing standard switches or outlets, nor does it cover public utilities regulated by the Corporation Commission or certain telecommunications data and voice wiring. Performing electrical work without the required license is a violation of the Act and is classified as a misdemeanor.
