Oklahoma Electrical Industry Regulations are statewide rules governing electrician licensing, continuing education, and electrical installations. They are managed by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB) under the Electrical License Act.
Licensing Tiers and Requirements
- Apprentice: An entry-level registration that requires annual renewal and 3 hours of continuing education. Apprentices must work under direct supervision.
- Journeyman: Requires 8,000 documented on-the-job hours — or an approved combination of classroom instruction and field work — along with a passing exam score.
- Master Electrician & Contractor: Requires advanced documented experience (e.g., 12,000 total hours for contractors), and authorizes the holder to supervise work and pull legal permits.
Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
- Journeymen & Contractors: Must complete 12 hours of CE every three years, divided between code updates and approved safety or theory topics such as NFPA 70E.
- Apprentices: Must complete 3 hours of CE annually before reregistering, unless enrolled in a student apprentice program.
Safety and Technical Standards
All electrical installations must comply with the adopted National Electrical Code (NEC) and any applicable state amendments, which are overseen by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission.
