Licensing and Registration Requirements
No individual may perform plumbing work or serve as a supervisor, foreman, or superintendent without holding a valid license or registration issued by the CIB. License classifications include apprentices, journeymen, and plumbing contractors, with specific limitations for residential contractors. Journeymen are strictly prohibited from independently contracting or supplying labor and materials. Licensees must notify the board of any changes to their address, business structure, or affiliations within 30 days.
Examinations and Fees
Applicants must achieve a passing score of at least 75% on each required examination section, which for contractors includes separate trade and business/law portions. The state recognizes verified military education, training, and experience toward examination qualifications and expedites the licensure process for military spouses. Mandatory continuing education requirements also apply to all license renewals.
Operational and Display Rules
Plumbing contractors must display their firm name and state license number, preceded by "OK," on both sides of any service vehicle used to transport tools and materials. Lettering must appear in a contrasting color and stand at least two inches tall. The state license number must also appear on all bids, contracts, and advertising materials, though this requirement does not apply to promotional items or work uniforms. Additionally, plumbers must carry their physical pocket license on their person while working on any job site.
