About This Book
The 2015 International Plumbing Code (IPC), published by the International Code Council (ICC), sets minimum regulatory standards for the design, installation, and inspection of plumbing systems.
Purpose and Scope The IPC establishes minimum safeguards for public health, safety, and welfare by regulating potable water supplies, waste conveyance, and structural protection. It applies to all building types except detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three stories, which fall under the International Residential Code (IRC). It does not cover fuel gas piping, swimming pool piping, process piping, or utility-owned systems.
Core Content Using both prescriptive and performance-based provisions, the code addresses: - General plumbing regulations and materials - Fixtures, faucets, and fixture fittings - Water heaters and water distribution - Sanitary drainage, vents, traps, and storm drainage - Specialized systems, including medical gases
Adoption and Enforcement As a model code, the IPC carries no legal authority until formally adopted by state or local governments. Jurisdictions typically adopt it alongside local amendments to create an enforceable building code.
