Major Updates in the 2020 Code
- GFCI Protection: Ground-fault circuit-interrupter requirements were expanded to include additional 125V–250V locations, such as kitchen, laundry, and basement sinks, as well as outdoor and crawl space outlets.
- Surge Protection: Type 1 or Type 2 surge protection devices are now mandatory for all new and replacement dwelling service panels.
- Emergency Disconnects: An exterior, readily accessible emergency disconnect is now required for all one- and two-family homes.
- Clearances: Rules governing receptacle placement near showers and bathtubs have been made more stringent.
