Key Concepts

Scope (Section 101.2). The code applies to installation of fuel-gas piping systems, fuel gas appliances, gaseous hydrogen systems and related accessories per Sections 101.2.1 through 101.2.5. Exception: detached one- and two-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses) not more than three stories high with separate means of egress, and their accessory structures, shall comply with the International Residential Code.

Piping pressures (Section 101.2.2). Covers natural gas piping with an operating pressure of 125 psig (862 kPa gauge) or less, and LP-gas at 20 psig (140 kPa gauge) or less, except as provided in Section 402.7. Coverage extends from the point of delivery to the outlet of the appliance shutoff valves, and includes design, materials, components, fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, inspection, operation and maintenance.

Gas appliances (Section 101.2.3). Requirements include installation, combustion and ventilation air and venting and connections to piping systems.

Key Concepts

Purpose and structure of Chapter 2. Chapter 2 exists to maintain a consensus on the specific meaning of each term contained in the code. It is split into Section 201 (IFGC) General and Section 202 (IFGC) General Definitions.

Section 201.1 Scope. Unless otherwise expressly stated, the words and terms listed in Chapter 2 have the meanings indicated in that chapter, for the purposes of the code and standard.

Section 201.2 Interchangeability. Words in the present tense include the future; the masculine gender includes the feminine and neuter; the singular includes the plural and the plural, the singular.

Section 201.3 Terms Defined in Other Codes. "Where terms are not defined in this code and are defined in the International Building Code, International Fire Code, International Mechanical Code or International Plumbing Code, such terms shall have meanings ascribed to them as in those codes." (Idaho note: IDAPA 24.39.70 states that all references to the International Plumbing Code are construed as referring to the Idaho State Plumbing Code as adopted and amended by the Idaho State Plumbing Board.)

Utility service piping inside buildings follows the structural safety and fire protection provisions of the International Building Code (Section 401.1.1); LP-gas storage follows the International Fire Code and NFPA 58 (Section 401.2).
• Modifications and added appliances. In modifying or adding to existing systems, sizes shall be maintained in accordance with Chapter 4 (Section 401.3). Key Concepts

Scope (Section 601.1). Chapter 6 governs approval, design, installation, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of the specifically identified appliances. Nearly every section also requires installation "in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions."

Vented wall furnaces (Section 608). - Door swing: located so a door cannot swing within 12 inches (305 mm) of an air inlet or air outlet, measured at right angles to the opening. Doorstops or door closers shall not be installed to obtain this clearance (608.4). - Ducts shall not be attached to wall furnaces; casing extension boots are prohibited unless listed as part of the appliance (608.5). - Installed between bathrooms and adjoining rooms, they shall not circulate air from bathrooms to other parts of the building (608.3).

2018 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), Chapter 7 (with related Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 provisions)

Scope and jurisdiction - "Gaseous hydrogen systems shall be regulated by Chapter 7." (Section 101.2.1) - Gaseous hydrogen systems are within the code's scope. Items outside the scope (Section 101.2.4) include portable LP-gas appliances not connected to a fixed fuel piping system (item 1), oxygen-fuel gas cutting and welding systems (item 4), LP-gas installations at utility gas plants (item 8), and installation of hydrogen gas, LP-gas and compressed natural gas (CNG) systems on vehicles (item 15). - Chapter 2 (Section 202) defines "HYDROGEN FUEL-GAS ROOM" and "HYDROGEN-GENERATING APPLIANCE" by directing the reader to See Section 702.1. - Installation shall comply with Chapter 7 and Chapters 53 and 58 of the International Fire Code; compressed gases also comply with IFC Chapter 50 (Section 701.1).
