Study Tips
Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.
Know your way around each book's index and table of contents. Open-book exams reward speed: you need to find specific items quickly.
Before reading the answer choices, try to predict the correct answer based solely on the question. Your thinking is sharpest at this moment, before distractors cloud your judgment. Then scan the choices for your prediction—if it's there, you're likely right. A quick check of the remaining options is still worthwhile, but trust your instinct.
A little anxiety before an exam is completely normal — acknowledge it instead of fighting it. If you feel yourself spiraling on a question, pause and take a few slow breaths to reset. If your test center allows a short break, use it; just remember the clock usually keeps running.
Every exam you take will be different from the last. New questions, new order, but always based on the exam bulletin in terms of topics, questions and time.
Sample Idaho -Limited Electrical Water Pump Installer Practice Questions
These questions come from our practice question bank, each with its answer and reference.
Sample 1 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 1
Question: Per NEC Article 110.12, what requirement applies to the mechanical execution of electrical work?
- A. All work must be performed by a licensed journeyman electrician
- B. Unused openings in boxes, raceways, and enclosures shall be effectively closed
- C. All conductors must be color-coded at every junction point
- D. Work must be inspected within 48 hours of completion
Correct Answer: B
Per NEC 110.12(A), unused openings other than those intended for the operation of equipment, those intended for mounting purposes, or those permitted as part of the design for listed equipment shall be effectively closed to afford protection substantially equivalent to the wall of the equipment. Sample 2 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Introduction
Question: Mandatory rules of the National Electrical Code — those that identify actions specifically required or prohibited — are characterized by the use of which terms?
- A. "shall" or "shall not"
- B. "shall be permitted" or "shall not be required"
- C. "should" or "should not"
- D. "may" or "may not"
Correct Answer: A
NEC 2017, Section 90.5(A) states that mandatory rules identify actions that are specifically required or prohibited and are characterized by the terms "shall" or "shall not." By contrast, 90.5(B) states that permissive rules — actions allowed but not required — are characterized by "shall be permitted" or "shall not be required." The terms "should," "may," and "must" are not the Code's designated mandatory-rule terms.

Sample 3 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA Calculations
Question: A continuous-duty motor rated more than 1 horsepower has a marked service factor of 1.15. The separate overload device originally selected trips before the motor can start and carry its load, so a higher-size sensing element is being considered. What is the maximum trip current permitted for the replacement overload device, expressed as a percentage of the motor nameplate full-load current rating?
- A. 130 percent
- B. 115 percent
- C. 125 percent
- D. 140 percent
Correct Answer: D
Per NEC 2017, 430.32(C), where the overload device selected under 430.32(A)(1) is not sufficient to start the motor or carry the load, a higher setting is permitted provided the trip current does not exceed 140 percent of nameplate full-load current for motors with a marked service factor of 1.15 or greater (130 percent for all other motors). The 125 percent value is the initial selection limit under 430.32(A)(1).
