How to Get Ready for the South Carolina - Bridges Exam
Treat your reference books like your tools. On an open-book exam you don't need every rule memorized. You need to know which book holds it and where to find it.
Buy the books the bulletin lists, in the editions it names. An older or newer edition can put the answer on a different page, or change it.
Learn your way around each book before you study anything else. The table of contents and the index are your layout.
Highlight what you look up most. The exam facts above list the bulletin's rules on tabs and markings, so follow them exactly.
Put in the reps with timed practice exams. The clock trains you to find answers at the pace the real exam needs: about 3 minutes 36 seconds per question.
Measure twice. When you miss a practice question, find the section in your book, read it and mark it. Keep at it until you pass practice exams consistently.

Working the Exam on Test Day
Work the exam in two passes. On the first pass, answer everything you know and bookmark the rest. Every exam lets you come back to bookmarked questions. On the second pass, go back to your bookmarks and take them one at a time.
Don't get hung up on one question. You have 3 hours for 50 questions, which is about 3 minutes 36 seconds per question. Before you finish, make sure nothing is left blank.
Study Tips
On an open-book exam, the winners aren't the smartest people in the room — they're the fastest at finding answers. Buy the required book, practice with it open, and tab and highlight each section the first time a question sends you there. Learn the index and table of contents until you can land on any topic in seconds. That speed is what separates a pass from a fail.
On an open-book exam, work through every question once: answer the ones you know and skip the ones you don't. Then go back to the ones you flagged. You can bookmark questions for later review, just like on our exams — and don't sink too much time into any single question. The clock is still running.
Give yourself at least three to six weeks. Use your exam's candidate bulletin as your roadmap for what's tested, and spend your time on finding-it-fast skills over rote memorization. In practice, aim for three clean passes at 80% or higher — setting your practice bar above the real cut score gives you a comfortable margin on test day.
Practicing against a ticking clock is the best way to beat exam-clock anxiety. Use these timed tests to build your pacing, so you learn to move steadily and never burn too long on a single question. By test day, the format feels routine.
Sample South Carolina - Bridges Questions
These come from our practice question bank, each with its answer and the reference behind it.
Sample 1 — Concrete - Reinforcing Steel
Question: You are a commercial concrete contractor managing a large warehouse slab pour. The pour runs late, and the crew plans to resume the next morning. At the stopping point, there will be no aggregate interlock across the joint. What load transfer device is generally recommended, and what is the typical diameter relative to slab thickness?
- A. Keyed joints at 1/3 slab thickness
- B. Smooth dowel bars at 1/4 slab thickness
- C. Smooth dowel bars at 1/8 slab thickness
- D. Deformed tie bars at 1/4 slab thickness
Correct Answer: C
At a construction joint, there is no aggregate interlock, so a load transfer device is needed. Dowel bars should generally have a diameter of 1/8 the slab thickness and be spaced at 12 in. (300 mm) on center. Keyed joints are no longer recommended because unreinforced joints lose contact when the joint opens due to drying shrinkage (ACI 302.1R).

Sample 2 — Safety - Code of Federal Regulations
Question: You are the contractor on a bridge deck hydrodemolition and rivet-busting operation. Feasible administrative and engineering controls have already been applied, and hearing protection has been issued because sound levels still exceed the permissible noise exposure table. The rivet busters also produce impulsive, impact-type noise. What peak sound pressure level must employee exposure to that impulsive or impact noise not exceed?
- A. 115 dB
- B. 125 dB
- C. 140 dB
- D. 160 dB
Correct Answer: C
Per 29 CFR 1926.52(e), exposure to impulsive or impact noise should not exceed 140 dB peak sound pressure level. The 115 dBA figure in option A is the slow-response sound level associated with the shortest (1/4 hour or less) continuous-exposure duration in Table D-2 under §1926.52(a), not the impulse-noise ceiling. Note also that §1926.52(b) requires feasible administrative or engineering controls to be used first, with PPE provided when those controls fail to bring levels within the table.

Sample 3 — Concrete Formwork
Question: What percentage range of the total cost of a concrete structure is typically attributed to formwork?
- A. 35 to 60 percent
- B. 10 to 25 percent
- C. 25 to 35 percent
- D. 60 to 80 percent
Correct Answer: A
According to the Contractor's Guide to Quality Concrete Construction, formwork costs range from 35 to 60 percent of the cost of a concrete structure, making it one of the most significant cost components in concrete construction.

Sample 4 — Paving
Question: A small fixed-form paving area has been approved on your project and you want to use built-up forms. What is the maximum total project area of pavement of that specified thickness that permits built-up forms, and the maximum amount the build-up may extend the form depth?
- A. 1,000 square yards; 10 percent
- B. 5,000 square yards; 25 percent
- C. 3,000 square yards; 25 percent
- D. 3,000 square yards; 50 percent
Correct Answer: C
SCDOT Subsection 501.3.8 prohibits built-up forms except where the total area of pavement of any specified thickness on the project is less than 3,000 square yards, and then the build-up may extend the form depth up to 25 percent. The build-up must be securely attached to the bottom of the form.
