A Simple Plan to Prepare for the West Virginia Plumbing Contractor Exam
Step one is the books. This is an open-book exam, so the references on the bulletin's list are what you'll work from, while you study and in the exam room. Get the editions the bulletin names.
Step two is learning your way around them. Go through each book's table of contents and index until you know where the major subjects are. You don't need to memorize the books. You need to find things in them.
Step three is marking them up. Highlight the sections you use most. The exam facts above list the bulletin's rules on tabs and markings, so follow them exactly.
Step four is timed practice. Our practice exams run on a clock, so you get used to the real exam's pace: about 1 minute 48 seconds per question.
Along the way, give the most time to the biggest topics. Water Supply and Distribution and Drain, Waste and Vent Systems make up 28% of the exam.
The last step is consistency. Keep practicing until you pass several practice exams in a row. That's the signal you're ready.
Reference Books for the West Virginia Plumbing Contractor Exam
The Plumbing Contractor exam lists the International Plumbing Code 2018, Plumbing Basics for Contractors 4th Edition (2021), and the International Fuel Gas Code 2018, all permitted as open book.
Where to get them:
On Test Day
Go through the exam at a steady pace. On your first pass, answer the questions you know and bookmark the ones you don't. Every exam lets you come back to bookmarked questions, but some lock the ones you've seen once you take a break, so finish your bookmarks first.
On your second pass, return to your bookmarks one at a time. You have 3 hours for 100 questions, which is about 1 minute 48 seconds per question, so keep moving and don't let one question hold you up. Before you finish, answer anything you skipped. A blank can't earn a point.
Study Tips
On an open-book exam, the winners aren't the smartest people in the room — they're the fastest at finding answers. Buy the required book, practice with it open, and tab and highlight each section the first time a question sends you there. Learn the index and table of contents until you can land on any topic in seconds. That speed is what separates a pass from a fail.
On an open-book exam, work through every question once: answer the ones you know and skip the ones you don't. Then go back to the ones you flagged. You can bookmark questions for later review, just like on our exams — and don't sink too much time into any single question. The clock is still running.
Give yourself at least three to six weeks. Use your exam's candidate bulletin as your roadmap for what's tested, and spend your time on finding-it-fast skills over rote memorization. In practice, aim for three clean passes at 80% or higher — setting your practice bar above the real cut score gives you a comfortable margin on test day.
Practicing against a ticking clock is the best way to beat exam-clock anxiety. Use these timed tests to build your pacing, so you learn to move steadily and never burn too long on a single question. By test day, the format feels routine.
Sample West Virginia Plumbing Contractor Practice Questions
Here are a few questions from our practice question bank, each with its answer and reference.
Sample 1 — General Knowledge
Question: A cooling coil serving an office suite is installed above a finished ceiling where overflow would damage building components. For auxiliary protection, the installer provides a UL 508 water-level detection device in the equipment-supplied drain pan that shuts off the equipment when the primary drain is blocked. Where must that device be located?
- A. Below the primary drain connection, at the pan bottom
- B. At the overflow rim of the equipment drain pan
- C. Above the primary drain connection, below the overflow rim
- D. Above the overflow rim, within an auxiliary pan
Correct Answer: C
IPC 2018 Section 314.2.3, Item 4, permits a water-level detection device conforming to UL 508 to be installed in the primary drain line, the overflow drain line or in the equipment-supplied drain pan, and requires that it be located at a point higher than the primary drain line connection and below the overflow rim of such pan.

Sample 2 — Fuel Gas Systems
Question: A journeyman is installing a ventilating hood above a domestic open-top broiler unit in a residence. What is the minimum clearance required between the cooking top and combustible material located above the hood?
- A. 20 inches
- B. 24 inches
- C. 12 inches
- D. 18 inches
Correct Answer: B
Per IFGC 623.5, a ventilating hood must be provided above a domestic open-top broiler unit unless the unit is listed for forced down-draft ventilation. Section 623.5.1 requires a minimum 24-inch clearance between the cooking top and combustible material above the hood, and the hood must be at least as wide as the broiler unit and centered over it.

Sample 3 — Plumbing Math
Question: You are figuring hoisting loads for a riser installation. The cast-iron pipe being set weighs 4.75 pounds per foot, and the total run is 129.4 feet. What is the weight of the pipe?
- A. 614.65 pounds
- B. 6,146.50 pounds
- C. 61.47 pounds
- D. 1,770.40 pounds
Correct Answer: A
4.75 × 129.4 = 614.65 pounds. When multiplying decimals, count the total digits to the right of the decimal points in both factors (three) and place the decimal that many places from the right in the product. See Plumbing Basics for Contractors, Chapter 3, Section 1.3.2, Multiplication of Decimals.

Sample 4 — Safety
Question: An atmosphere in a confined space is classified as oxygen enriched when the oxygen content exceeds what percentage by volume?
- A. 20.9 percent
- B. 25 percent
- C. 23.5 percent
- D. 22 percent
Correct Answer: C
An oxygen-enriched atmosphere is usually considered to be more than 23.5 percent oxygen by volume; an oxygen-deficient atmosphere is less than 19.5 percent. Added oxygen dramatically increases fire risk — as in the documented case of a welder fatally burned inside a pipe that crew members had 'sweetened' with oxygen.
