What This Practice Exam Covers
The Alabama Marine Construction Contractor licensing exam is 50 questions, 120-minute time limit, 70% to pass. That means you need at least 35 correct answers.
This practice exam gives you two options.

What You'll Be Tested On
The exam covers four topic areas. Here's what each one actually demands.
Miscellaneous Engineering – Pile Driving (25 items)
This is half the exam. Do not underestimate it.
You need to know pile types cold — timber, concrete, steel H-piles, sheet piles, pipe piles, and composite piles. Know what each is used for and how they're classified.
Pile-driving hammers are a heavy focus. Expect questions on drop hammers, single-acting and double-acting air/steam hammers, diesel hammers, and vibratory hammers. You need to know how each works, how to select one for a job, and how to calculate or compare energy output. Equipment rental rate calculations also appear — as shown in the sample question below.
Driving procedures and stresses matter. For concrete piles specifically, know cushion requirements and how driving stresses are managed to avoid pile damage.
Sheet pile installation and cofferdam applications are tested separately. Know the difference between sheet pile types and when a cofferdam is the right solution.
Air compressors and compressed-air systems round out this section. Know how air pressure and volume requirements are matched to hammer selection. References from Construction Equipment Guide, Chapter 2 — pages 78 through 107 — cover this section extensively.
Concrete (15 items)
Thirty percent of the exam. Expect calculation-based questions alongside definition and classification questions.
Cement types — know portland cement types (I through V) and what each is for. Blended and hydraulic cements are also on the table.
Mix design and proportioning requires you to work with the water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm). Lower w/cm means higher strength and lower permeability — know the numbers associated with specific exposure categories.
Durability and exposure is a big area. Freeze-thaw cycles, sulfate attack, chloride-induced corrosion, and permeability requirements each have specific w/cm limits and air content requirements. Marine environments make chloride corrosion especially relevant here.
Admixtures — air-entraining agents, water reducers, accelerators, retarders, fly ash, slag, and silica fume. Know what each does and when to use it.
Placing and finishing covers subgrade prep, concrete depositing methods, consolidation by vibration, and formwork pressure calculations.
Curing is straightforward but tested. Know wet curing vs. membrane curing, minimum curing durations, and how temperature affects curing. Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures is the primary source throughout this section.
Safety (6 items)
Six items, but each one has a correct and a wrong answer — don't give these away.
Fall protection requires knowing the three systems — guardrail, safety net, and personal fall arrest — and the height thresholds that trigger each.
PPE selection is practical: right glove, right respirator, right eye protection for the task.
Cranes and derricks are especially relevant to marine construction. Know load chart reading, rigging basics, and safe operating procedures.
Confined spaces — know permit-required confined space entry procedures and the atmospheric testing sequence: oxygen first, then flammable gases, then toxic contaminants.
Fire protection references OSHA 1926.150 sections on fire extinguisher requirements and placement.
Excavation and trenching covers sloping angles, shoring systems, and cave-in protection. OSHA 1926 CFR 29 is the controlling reference across most safety questions.

Concrete – Reinforcing Steel (4 items)
Four questions, but they're specific enough that a missed detail costs you.
Know rebar grades and ASTM designations — Grade 40, 60, and 80, and the difference between plain and deformed bars.
Bar identification markings are tested directly. You need to read a rebar marking and identify the mill, bar size, steel type, and grade.
Concrete cover requirements vary by exposure condition and member type. Know the standard minimums.
Bar supports — chairs, bolsters, and their designations — are covered in Bar Supports, Chapter 10.
Splice types — lap, mechanical, and welded — each have specific requirements. Welded splice requirements come from Placing Reinforcing Bars, Chapter 11, Welded Splices section.
Worked Sample Questions
Sample 1 — Pile Driving: Equipment Rental Rate
Question: A marine contractor rents a vibratory pile-driving hammer on a monthly basis at $3,558 per month (176 hours). What is the approximate hourly rental rate?

Correct Answer: A — $20.22
Divide the monthly rate by the monthly hours: $3,558 ÷ 176 = $20.22 per hour. Equipment rental rates are priced on a standard daily (8-hour), weekly (40-hour), or monthly (176-hour) basis. If you try to work backward from one of the wrong answers, you'll find they don't correspond to any logical division of the numbers. Do the arithmetic; don't estimate.

Sample 2 — Concrete: Air Content and Steel-Troweled Finishes
Question: You have just placed concrete for a new garage floor slab. The homeowner wants a smooth, steel-troweled finish. What is the maximum total air content recommended for concrete that will receive a steel-troweled finish to reduce the risk of blistering and surface delamination?

- B. 2%
- C. 3%
- D. 6%
Correct Answer: C — 3%
ACI 302 sets a 3% maximum total air content for concrete that will be steel-troweled. Steel troweling seals the surface. If air content is too high, air pockets get trapped beneath that sealed layer, causing blistering and delamination. This is a memorization item — 3% is the number, and the reason is the sealing action of the trowel.

Sample 3 — Safety: Hearing Protection Threshold
Question: Hearing protection triggered above:
- A. 85 dBA
- B. 90 dBA
- C. 95 dBA
- D. 100 dBA
Correct Answer: A — 85 dBA
OSHA requires a hearing conservation program — including hearing protection — when noise exposure reaches or exceeds 85 dBA as an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA). The action level is 85 dBA, not 90. The 90 dBA figure is the permissible exposure limit (PEL), but the protection requirement kicks in 5 dB lower. Candidates who confuse these two numbers pick B and lose the point.
How to Read Your Score
70% passes. That's 35 out of 50 correct.
Your first practice attempt is a diagnostic, not a verdict. It tells you where your knowledge is solid and where it isn't. A score of 75% or higher on the first attempt suggests you're in good shape but should confirm your weak spots before sitting the real exam. A score between 70% and 75% means you're close — but "close on practice" often means "short on test day" when nerves and unfamiliar phrasing are in play.
If you score below 70%, look at which topic areas cost you the most. Pile Driving is 50% of the exam — a weak score there matters more than a weak score in Reinforcing Steel. Use the topic breakdown to decide where your study time goes next.
Retake the full practice exam after focused study. A second attempt from the 135+ question pool will show whether your score improves or whether gaps remain. Consistent scores above 80% across multiple attempts indicate solid readiness.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Pile Driving calculation errors. Multi-step problems — rental rates, hammer energy output, volume calculations — are where people rush and drop points. Write out each step. Don't do it in your head.
Confusing hammer types. Diesel hammers, single-acting vs. double-acting air hammers, and vibratory hammers have different operating principles and applications. A question that describes how a hammer works is asking you to name it — know the mechanics, not just the names.
Wrong w/cm ratio for the exposure condition. Concrete mix design questions often hinge on a single threshold value. Sulfate exposure uses different limits than chloride exposure. Marine contractors especially need to know chloride-related durability requirements.
Air content vs. finish type. The 3% maximum for steel-troweled slabs trips up candidates who only remember the air entrainment ranges for freeze-thaw protection.
Safety thresholds off by one option. The 85 dBA hearing protection question is a good example. OSHA thresholds have specific trigger values — one answer choice is always the number you've almost memorized.
Running out of time on Pile Driving. With 25 items in that section, slow calculation work can leave you rushing through Concrete and Safety at the end.
