Expect questions on gypsum panel types, thicknesses, and product specifications — you need to know which panel products apply to which applications, not just that differences exist. Steel stud and runner types, gauges, and framing component selection are tested directly: know the difference between load-bearing and non-load-bearing framing and what gauge distinctions mean for assembly selection.

Fastener knowledge is specific. The exam pulls from the Gypsum Construction Handbook, Chapter 1, Selector Guide for Screws and the Appendix — Gypsum Board Screw Usage tables. Know screw types, sizes, and the correct fastener for wood versus steel framing. Installation methods — single-layer, double-layer, and adhesive attachment — each carry distinct procedural requirements. Joint compound selection is also tested here: setting-type versus drying-type (ready-mixed) products behave differently and are appropriate in different situations.

Maximum fastener spacing and frame spacing requirements are table-driven. The Gypsum Construction Handbook, Chapter 2, Maximum Frame Spacing—Drywall Construction table is a direct source. Expect questions that require you to identify the correct spacing for a given panel thickness, orientation, and application.

Estimating and Plan Reading — 6 of 40 Items

These questions test applied math and document interpretation, not just vocabulary. Quantity takeoff for gypsum board and metal framing requires calculating area, accounting for waste, and working from dimensions shown on drawings. Screw and fastener usage calculations are derived from framing spacing and panel orientation — the Gypsum Construction Handbook, Appendix — Gypsum Board Screw Usage tables, including both horizontal and vertical board attachment subtables, are tested directly.

Fire-resistance ratings and UL assembly designations must be read from plan documents, not guessed. You must recognize what makes a tested assembly valid and what happens when materials are substituted. Sound control ratings — STC, IIC, NRC, and CAC — appear as values you read from specifications and match to performance requirements.

Special Applications — 6 of 40 Items

This section covers less common but technically specific installations. One-piece metal door frame installation and anchorage requirements come from the Gypsum Construction Handbook, Chapter 2, Door Frame Installation section. Safety — 5 of 40 Items

Every safety question on this exam ties to a specific OSHA regulation in 29 CFR 1926. PPE requirements for hard hats and eye protection are governed by §1926.100(a) and (b)(1) and §1926.102(a)(3). Fall protection thresholds, guardrail specifications, and personal fall arrest systems are covered across §1926.501 and §1926.502. The smallest topic by count, but questions are precise. Levels of finish (Level 0 through Level 5) have specific definitions — the exam tests what each level requires, not just what order they fall in. Embedding tape over flat joints and interior corners, applying fill and finish coats, spotting fastener heads, and corner bead application all have procedural steps that are tested directly from Finishing Drywall Systems, Chapter 5. Mixing setting-type compounds has a specific sequence — skipping steps or getting the order wrong is tested.

This is a table-specific number — 2:1 looks plausible but is too generous, and the exam is testing whether you know the precise limit, not the ballpark.


Question 2 — Estimating and Plan Reading

When interpreting construction drawings for a fire-rated partition, what happens if materials other than those specified in the tested assembly are substituted?

These distractors are real ASTM standards for real gypsum products — the question tests whether you know which standard applies to standard gypsum board specifically.


How to Read Your Score

Passing requires 28 of 40 correct — 70%. Use your first practice attempt as a diagnostic, not a verdict. A score of 55–65% on your first full attempt is common and tells you something useful: which of the five topic areas are costing you points and which are already solid.

If your score sits between 68–72%, resist the temptation to assume you're ready. Proximity to the passing mark on a practice exam — where questions repeat across attempts to some degree — does not reliably translate to passing on test day. The real exam uses the full range of the topic areas without any indication of which section a question belongs to.

Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each attempt. A low score in Materials and Installation (19 items) is more urgent to fix than a weak Safety section (5 items) because the point value difference is nearly four times greater. Prioritize effort based on item count, not just comfort level.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Confusing similar code section numbers. The exam draws from multiple IBC sections and IRC tables simultaneously. Candidates who know a rule in general but can't place it in the right table or section pick plausible-sounding wrong answers. The ASTM standard question above is a perfect example.

Misreading screw usage tables. The Gypsum Construction Handbook Appendix screw usage tables have separate subtables for horizontal versus vertical board attachment and for different board sizes. Applying the horizontal attachment value to a vertical installation — or pulling from the 4′ × 8′ table when the problem specifies a 4′ × 12′ board — produces a wrong answer even with correct arithmetic.

Getting the finish level definitions backwards. Candidates often confuse Level 1 and Level 2 finish requirements, or underestimate what Level 5 demands. The exam tests the specific requirements for each level, not just their rank order.

Substitution and fire assembly questions. Many candidates assume documented substitutions are acceptable if materials are equivalent in thickness. The reference material says otherwise, and the exam reflects that.

Running out of time on Materials and Installation. With 19 items in this section, candidates who slow down on framing tables or fastener calculations can run short on time for the full 40-question exam. Pacing through table-based questions is a skill worth practicing.
