What You'll Be Tested On

The exam covers eight topic areas. Here's what each one actually requires you to know.

Fabrication — 6 items (heaviest topic)

This is the biggest section. Expect questions on wood milling and dimensioning: the correct sequence of jointing, planing, ripping, and crosscutting, and why order matters. You'll need to know material selection — when to use solid wood vs. plywood vs. MDF vs. particleboard, and what each material handles well or handles poorly.

Cabinet and case construction questions cover joinery options (dadoes, rabbets, mortise-and-tenon, biscuits) and internal architecture decisions. Door fabrication covers frame-and-panel construction, flat panel, board-and-batten, and arch-top doors — including how panels float to allow wood movement.

Drawer construction is a frequent source of questions: joinery types (dovetail, lock rabbet, box joint), overlay styles (full, half, inset), and how drawer bottoms are installed. Shelf fabrication rounds this section out — fixed vs. adjustable systems, sag prevention for long spans, and edging methods.

Wood movement is a thread running through all of fabrication. Know how solid wood moves seasonally and how joinery accommodates it.

Installation — 5 items

This section covers the job-site side of millwork. Door installation questions address prehung doors, pocket doors, bifold doors, and French doors — shimming, plumbing, and squaring the frame. Window trim installation includes extension jambs, stool-and-apron assemblies, and surround frames.

Door and window casing questions test both mitered and butted frame styles and how to fit them cleanly to walls that aren't plumb or square. Base molding installation covers coped vs. mitered inside corners, scribing to curved walls, and the order of installation. Cornice and crown molding questions focus on coped joints, backing requirements, and sequencing around a room. Stair trim-out includes skirt boards, treads, risers, and balustrade assembly.

Materials — 5 items

Know the panel products cold: plywood, MDF, particleboard, and lumbercore — their strengths, limitations, and appropriate applications. Wood moisture content, drying, and acclimation questions are practical: what happens if you install wood that hasn't acclimated, and how long acclimation takes.

Fastener questions cover nails, screws, pneumatic fasteners, and knockdown hardware — the right fastener for the application. Adhesive selection questions ask you to match the glue type to the joint and the material. Molding attachment questions focus on accounting for wood movement, particularly attaching solid-wood moldings to cases or tops. Solid-wood top construction covers edge treatment options and grain orientation decisions.

Finishing — 4 items

Floor finishing questions test specific products: penetrating oils, shellac, polyurethane, and waterborne urethanes — how they differ and when to use each. Floor sanding sequence questions matter: drum sander, disc sander, and random orbit sander used in the correct order.

Expect questions on applying paste filler to nail holes and gaps between flooring strips. Correcting door installation defects (hinge sag, warped doors, misaligned latches) is tested. Repairing damaged molding — hammer dents, blow-outs, dutchman inlays — is also fair game. Closing and repairing open joints in miter, butt, and coped trim rounds out this section.

Hand Tools — 3 items

Questions test identification and proper selection of hand tools for finish carpentry tasks. Measuring and layout tools include tape measures, squares, levels, plumb bobs, and chalk lines — know which to use when. Cutting tools questions cover saws, chisels, and hand planes. Tool belt organization is tested: what goes on the belt and where. Sharpening edge tools with waterstones and honing guides is specifically called out.

Safety — 3 items

This section draws directly from OSHA 29 CFR 1926. Fall protection requirements at 29 CFR 1926, §1926.501(b)(1) and §1926.501(c) are cited in the question bank. Scaffold safety — including §1926.451(a)(1), §1926.451(g)(1), and §1926.451(g)(4)(ii) — is tested. Ladder safety at §1926.1053(b)(1) appears, as does stairway safety at §1926.1052(a)(1). PPE requirements and tool guards under §1926.300(c) and §1926.301(a) are also tested.

Machines — 2 items

Stationary tools (table saw, miter saw, jointer, planer), hand power tools (circular saw, jig saw, reciprocating saw), pneumatic tools (finish nailers, brad tackers), routing tools, sanding machines, and drilling tools. Questions test correct tool selection for specific tasks and safe setup.

Plans and Estimating — 2 items

Bid price calculation using direct cost, overhead, and profit margin. Material takeoff for running and standing moldings. Labor cost estimation and manhour-based scheduling. Change orders and contract documentation. Waste allowance factors and bill of materials prep. Site inspection items that adjust a bid.


Worked Sample Questions

Question 1 — Fabrication

You are fabricating a large built-in entertainment center with solid-wood sides and multiple drawers. You need drawer runners that allow the solid-wood sides to move seasonally without cracking the case. How do you attach the runners?

  • A. Glue the runners fully into the dadoes for maximum rigidity
  • B. Drive screws through oversize holes in the runners into the case sides without gluing the runners into the dadoes
  • C. Nail the runners directly to the case sides using finish nails at 6-inch intervals
  • D. Use biscuit joinery to permanently fix the runners to both the case sides and back divider

Correct answer: B.

Solid wood moves across the grain seasonally. If you glue or permanently fix the runner into the dado, that movement has nowhere to go and the case cracks. The oversize screw hole lets the wood move while keeping the runner functional. Leave an ⅛-inch gap between the runner shoulder and the back divider for the same reason — and don't glue the rear tenons either. Question 2 — Installation

When assembling a door jamb, what is the purpose of cutting saw kerfs into the back surface of site-made jamb stock?

  • A. To allow moisture drainage behind the jamb
  • B. To create channels for adhesive application
  • C. To relieve warping stress in the wood
  • D. To provide a nailing guide for casing installation

Correct answer: C.

Three or four saw kerfs, cut ½ inch apart and ½ inch deep into the back face of site-made jamb stock, relieve internal stress that would otherwise cause the jamb to cup or warp after installation. Factory jamb stock comes with these grooves already milled in. If you skip this step on site-made stock, you'll fight a bowed jamb when you're trying to hang the door. Question 3 — Materials

You are building a freestanding bookcase visible from the back. You want the back to look as refined as the front. Which back panel method is correct?

  • A. Staple MDF panels to the rear of the case
  • B. Nail a sheet of ¼-inch hardboard into rabbets
  • C. Build a frame-and-panel back and glue it into rabbets milled in the case
  • D. Screw a single sheet of hardwood plywood into rabbets

Correct answer: C.

When a piece is freestanding and visible from behind, hardboard or a plain sheet of plywood nailed into rabbets reads as utilitarian — fine for built-ins against a wall, wrong for a finished piece. A frame-and-panel back glued into rabbets matches the quality of the front and sides. It's extra work, but it's the right call for high-end or freestanding casework. How to Read Your Score

Passing is 70% — 21 out of 30. A practice score tells you where you stand, not where you'll stay.

Your first attempt is a diagnostic. Don't treat a 60% as a failure; treat it as a map. Look at which topics you missed. If you're dropping points in Fabrication — the heaviest section at 6 items — that's where you study first. If Safety or Plans and Estimating are costing you, review the specific OSHA sections and bid calculation steps.

Scoring in the low 70s on practice usually isn't enough cushion. The real exam has pressure, unfamiliar phrasing, and no option to look things up. Aim for consistent 80%+ on the full 30-question practice before you schedule the real test. The pool of 168+ questions means you can take multiple attempts and still see fresh questions. Use that to your advantage — each attempt shows you different gaps.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Fabrication questions on wood movement. Candidates who know joinery but haven't thought about seasonal movement choose glued or fixed connections where the correct answer requires a floating connection. This costs points on drawer runner and solid-top questions.

Installation sequencing. Crown and base molding questions often test the order of cuts and cope vs. miter decisions for inside corners. Candidates who work inside corners with miters instead of copes pick the wrong answer.

Safety code specifics. The exam cites specific OSHA sections — §1926.451 for scaffolds, §1926.501 for fall protection, §1926.1053 for ladders. Vague knowledge of "safety rules" isn't enough. Know the specific requirements tied to each system.

Floor finishing product selection. Candidates confuse penetrating oils with film-forming finishes or mix up waterborne and oil-based polyurethane characteristics. These are distinct products with distinct properties — know them separately.

Bid price calculation. Plans and Estimating only has 2 items, but multi-step bid calculations (direct cost + overhead + profit margin) trip up candidates who skip steps. Don't leave these points on the table — the math is straightforward if you work it in the right order.
