Sample 1 — Drywall Materials and Installation

Question: You are a contractor framing a non-load-bearing interior partition using 25-gauge steel studs. You need to attach the steel runners to a concrete floor. Which of the following fastening methods is appropriate for securing runners to concrete?

  • A. 3/8" Type S-12 pan head screws
  • B. 1-1/4" Type W screws
  • C. Stub nails or power-driven fasteners
  • D. Toggle bolts

Correct Answer: C

According to the Gypsum Construction Handbook, runners are securely attached to concrete and masonry using stub nails or power-driven fasteners. Toggle bolts are specified for suspended ceilings, Type W screws for wood framing, and Type S-12 pan head screws for foam-backed metal concrete inserts.

Sample 2 — Ceilings, Acoustical Systems Materials and Installation

Question: Suspended ceilings in seismic design categories D, E and F normally call for 2-inch wall molding. Alternate designs using seismic accessories such as ACM7 clips permit wall molding of what narrower width?

  • A. 1/2″
  • B. 1-1/4″
  • C. 1-1/2″
  • D. 7/8″

Correct Answer: D

Alternate seismic design solutions allow preferred aesthetic details such as 7/8″ wall molding in place of 2″ wall molding in seismic categories D, E and F, with performance achieved through accessories including ACM7 seismic clips and four-way seismic expansion joint clips.

Sample 3 — Taping and Finishing

Question: You are a carpenter installing drywall in a large open-plan office. The architect is concerned about potential cracking due to thermal and hygrometric expansion along the long partition runs. What installation measure should you recommend to relieve stress and minimize cracking in these areas?

  • A. Use thicker drywall panels throughout the entire partition
  • B. Increase the number of fasteners at each stud location
  • C. Install control joints for relief in long partition runs and large ceiling areas
  • D. Apply additional layers of joint compound over all joints

Correct Answer: C

According to the Gypsum Construction Handbook, excessive stresses from hygrometric and/or thermal expansion and contraction can cause joint and field cracking. The recommended prevention is to correct improper job conditions and install control joints for relief in long partition runs and large ceiling areas.

Treat your first attempt as a checkup, not a verdict. After every attempt, the results page breaks your score down by outline topic, so you can see which topics need work. Compare your score with the real exam's passing score, 21 correct answers out of 30 scored questions, and keep practicing until you pass consistently.

  • Answer what you know first. Go through every question once, answer the ones you know, and bookmark the rest. Our practice exams let you bookmark and come back.
  • Come back to your bookmarks. Work them out on your second pass.
  • Watch your pace. The real exam works out to about 2 minutes 30 seconds per question.
  • Look up every miss. After each attempt, find each missed question's reference in your book and read the section.
