Sample 1 — Steep Slope Roofing, including BUR, Waterproofing

Question: For low-slope membrane roof systems, what minimum safety factor is typically considered appropriate when determining the design uplift-resistance capacity of the roof assembly?

  • A. 1.67
  • B. 2.5
  • C. 1.0
  • D. 2.0

Correct Answer: D

According to the NRCA manual's Appendix 1 on Wind Uplift, for low-slope membrane roof systems, a minimum safety factor of 2.0 typically is considered appropriate, based on ASTM D6630. The safety factor of 1.67 applies to steel deck assemblies with steel or aluminum metal panel roof systems, not membrane roof systems.

Sample 2 — Estimating and Plan Reading

Question: An independent person, firm or corporation, approved by the building official, who is competent and experienced in the application of engineering principles to materials, methods or systems analyses, meets the definition of which term?

  • A. Approved source
  • B. Approved agency
  • C. Approved fabricator
  • D. Registered design professional

Correct Answer: A

Chapter 2 defines 'approved source' as an independent person, firm or corporation, approved by the building official, who is competent and experienced in the application of engineering principles to materials, methods or systems analyses. An 'approved agency' is regularly engaged in conducting tests or furnishing inspection services, and an 'approved fabricator' is approved pursuant to Chapter 17.

Sample 3 — Surface Preparation and Planning

Question: For wood shake and wood shingle roof systems, what is the minimum recommended nominal plywood thickness for roof decks over rafters spaced at 24 inches on center?

  • A. ½ inch
  • B. ⅜ inch
  • C. ⅝ inch
  • D. ¾ inch

Correct Answer: D

NRCA recommends a minimum of four-ply, nominal ¾-inch-thick (actual 23/32-inch) plywood for 24-inch rafter spacings for wood shake and wood shingle roof systems. The ⅝-inch nominal thickness is the minimum recommended for 16-inch rafter spacings.
