3 questions

Sample 1 — Administration and General Regulations

Question: You are piping the condensate drain from a condensing gas-fired appliance to an approved disposal point. The condensate piping must maintain a horizontal slope in the direction of discharge of not less than:

  • A. 1/8 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (1-percent slope)
  • B. 1/2 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (4-percent slope)
  • C. 1/16 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (0.5-percent slope)
  • D. 1/4 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (2-percent slope)

Correct Answer: A

IPC 314.1 requires liquid combustion byproducts of condensing appliances to be collected and discharged through corrosion-resistant piping not smaller than the appliance drain connection, maintaining a horizontal slope in the direction of discharge of not less than one-eighth unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (1-percent slope).

Sample 2 — Gas Piping

Question: You are a journeyman plumber called to purge a new gas piping system that operates at 3 psig. You plan to vent the purged gases indoors through an appliance burner. Is this acceptable?

  • A. No — piping systems with a design operating gas pressure greater than 2 psig must be purged outdoors
  • B. Yes, as long as a combustible gas detector is used at the point of discharge
  • C. Yes, as long as the burner has a continuous source of ignition
  • D. Yes, if the total piping volume is less than 10 cubic feet

Correct Answer: A

Per IFGC Section 406.7.1, piping systems with a design operating gas pressure greater than 2 psig are required to be purged outdoors. Indoor purging is only allowed for systems at 2 psig or less that also do not meet the size and length criteria of Table 406.7.1.1.

Sample 3 — Plumbing Fixtures

Question: Lavatories shall be provided with waste outlets having a diameter of not less than:

  • A. 1 1/2 inches
  • B. 1 1/4 inches
  • C. 1 inch
  • D. 2 inches

Correct Answer: B

Per IPC 2018 Section 419.3, lavatories shall have waste outlets not less than 1 1/4 inches in diameter, with a strainer, pop-up stopper, crossbar or other device to restrict the clear opening. The 1 1/2-inch minimum applies to sinks, laundry trays and showers.
