4 topics

General Trade Knowledge 13 items

Our study plan for this topic: Scope and applicability of IRC vs. IBC (dwelling types, story limits, accessory structures); Key code definitions for structural and framing terms (dead load, live load, braced wall line, diaphragm, light-frame construction); Building official authority, duties, and permit administration; Climatic and geographic design criteria (wind speed, seismic design category, snow load, flood hazard area); Minimum live and dead load requirements for floors, roofs, and structural members; Structural design methods and load combinations (ASD, LRFD, strength design); Risk category classification and its effect on design requirements; Alternative materials, engineered design, and referenced standards applicability.

Foundation and Floor Framing 11 items

Our study plan for this topic: Footing size, depth, and frost protection requirements (IRC/IBC); Foundation wall types and prescriptive design (concrete and masonry); Foundation anchorage and sill plate attachment; Floor joist span tables, species, grades, and spacing; Girder and header spans for floor framing; Floor sheathing (lumber and wood structural panel) allowable spans and installation; Joist notching, boring, and hole limitations; Soil classification and presumptive load-bearing values.

Wall Framing 16 items

Our study plan for this topic: Stud size, height, and spacing requirements for bearing and nonbearing walls; Header and girder spans for exterior and interior bearing walls; Top plate and bottom plate requirements, including double top plate splicing; Drilling and notching limitations for studs and top plates; Wall bracing methods, braced wall panel construction, and required bracing lengths; Fastening schedules for wall framing connections; Cripple wall framing and bracing requirements; Cold-formed steel wall framing member sizes, fastening, and web hole limitations.

Roof Framing 10 items

Our study plan for this topic: Rafter span tables and slope requirements (IBC/IRC conventional light-frame); Ceiling joist span tables and attic live load conditions; Roof framing member connections and nailing requirements (ridge, hip, valley, collar tie, rafter ties); Wood truss design requirements, truss design drawings, and truss member restraint/bracing; Roof sheathing materials, allowable spans, and installation (lumber and wood structural panels); Roof load types and combinations (dead, live, snow, wind, rain/ponding) per IBC Chapter 16; Rafter and truss uplift connection forces and wind tie-down requirements; Minimum slope requirements and framing details for ridge board, hip, valley, and purlin bracing.

3 questions

Sample 1 — Wall Framing

Question: Wood floor joists frame into a masonry bearing wall. Except where the member is supported in the manner required for beams and girders, joists shall have a bearing of not less than what length?

  • A. 1 inch
  • B. 1-1/2 inches
  • C. 3 inches
  • D. 1-1/4 inches

Correct Answer: B

Per IRC 2015 Section R606.6.3.1, joists shall have a bearing of not less than 1-1/2 inches, except as provided in Section R606.6.3 (beams, girders and other concentrated loads require 3 inches of bearing on solid masonry not less than 4 inches thick).

Sample 2 — General Trade Knowledge

Question: A detached storage building is proposed next to a dwelling you are constructing. Which condition is required for the building to meet the code definition of an accessory structure?

  • A. It is not more than one story in height
  • B. It is located on the same lot as the dwelling
  • C. Floor area does not exceed 200 square feet
  • D. It is detached from the dwelling by at least 3 feet

Correct Answer: B

Per 2015 IRC Section R202, an accessory structure is defined as a structure that is accessory to and incidental to that of the dwelling(s) and that is located on the same lot. The 200-square-foot and one-story conditions belong to the permit-exemption provisions of Section R105.2, not to the definition.

Sample 3 — Foundation and Floor Framing

Question: You are framing a conventional light-frame floor in which joists run from opposite sides and bear on a center girder. Rather than tying the opposing joists together, you intend to lap them over the girder. What is the minimum required lap length?

  • A. 6 inches
  • B. 1 1/2 inches
  • C. 3 inches
  • D. 2 inches

Correct Answer: C

Per IBC 2015 Section 2308.4.2.3, joist framing from opposite sides of a beam, girder or partition shall be lapped at least 3 inches, or the opposing joists shall be tied together in an approved manner. The 1 1/2-inch figure is the minimum end bearing on wood or metal, and 2 inches is the minimum ledger strip dimension for joists framing into the side of a wood girder — both are different requirements in the same section.

Treat your first attempt as a checkup, not a verdict. After every attempt, the results page breaks your score down by outline topic, so you can see which topics need work. Compare your score with the real exam's passing score, a minimum score of 75, and keep practicing until you pass consistently.

  • Answer what you know first. Go through every question once, answer the ones you know, and bookmark the rest. Our practice exams let you bookmark and come back.
  • Come back to your bookmarks. Work them out on your second pass.
  • Watch your pace. The real exam works out to about 3 minutes per question.
  • Look up every miss. After each attempt, find each missed question's reference in your book and read the section.
