What This Practice Exam Covers
The Louisiana Residential Roofing licensing exam consists of 50 questions answered within 120 minutes. A score of 70% (35 correct) is required to pass. The exam covers five topic areas: Materials, Installation of Roof Coverings, Roof Drainage, Roofing Structures, and Safety.

What You'll Be Tested On
Materials — 15 exam items
The heaviest single topic area. Expect questions on asphalt shingle composition, including the reinforcing mat (fiberglass or organic), asphalt and filler coatings, surfacing granules, and the self-sealing strip. You must know ASTM D3462 (fiberglass-mat shingles) and ASTM D3018 (organic-mat shingles) by name and purpose.
Underlayment questions are detailed. Know the distinction between asphalt felt types under ASTM D4869, synthetic sheet characteristics under ASTM D8257, and polymer-modified bitumen sheets. NRCA draws a hard line at 0.1 perms for "impermeable" synthetic underlayments — that specific threshold appears in the question bank.
Roof deck substrate questions test plywood vs. OSB properties, exposure durability classifications, and wood plank requirements. For clay and concrete tile, know ASTM C1167 (clay) and ASTM C1492 (concrete), breaking load ranges, water absorption limits, and freeze-thaw resistance grades tied to weathering index regions. For slate, know ASTM C406 grades and how they correspond to service life expectations. Metal shingle questions focus on substrate coatings: galvanized steel, Galvalume, aluminum, copper, and zinc — their properties and where each is appropriate.
Installation of Roof Coverings — 18 exam items
The largest topic by item count. Asphalt shingle installation questions cover starter course placement and fastening, nail specifications, offset patterns, racking vs. diagonal application, hand-tabbing laminated shingles, and steep-slope attachment requirements. Know exposure and headlap rules.
Underlayment installation questions are slope-dependent. You need to know when single-layer vs. double-layer mechanically attached applications apply, self-adhering sheet lap dimensions, and the conditions that trigger water-and-ice-dam protection underlayment.
Clay and concrete tile fastening methods — nailing, screwing, wire-tying — are tested along with breaking load ranges (250 to 1,000 pounds) and the tile types covered by ASTM C1167 and C1492. Slate installation questions address fastener material, nail hole placement relative to the slate's head, and the fastener requirements found in the NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep Slope Roof Systems, Chapter 4—Slate.
Wood shake and wood shingle questions cover grading, species, exposure rules, and the difference between solid and spaced sheathing requirements for each product.
Roof Drainage — 5 exam items
Fewer questions but precise, code-specific answers are expected. Primary drain design requirements come from the IBC. Secondary (emergency overflow) drain and scupper questions ask about minimum opening dimensions and purpose — know these cold. Valley construction questions distinguish open, closed-cut, and no-cut methods and their flashing requirements. Drip edge installation questions address both eave and rake placement and the sequence of installation relative to underlayment. Gutter material standards and eave detail compatibility across roof covering types (asphalt shingle, tile, slate, wood shake/shingle, metal shingle) round out this section.
Roofing Structures — 7 exam items
Calculation questions appear here. Roof slope is expressed as rise over run; pitch equals rise over span (total width). Know how to convert between these and how to identify slope from a ratio such as 4:12. IBC Table 2304.8(1) and Table 2304.8(3) govern plywood and OSB sheathing thickness and span ratings at standard rafter spacings — memorize which table applies to which panel type.
Dead load vs. live load questions require you to know design load values for different roofing materials; heavier materials like concrete tile carry significantly higher dead loads than asphalt shingles. IBC Table 1607.1 is the reference for roof live loads. Wind uplift questions reference exposure categories and pressure zones under IBC Section 1609.4.2 and Section 1609.5.3. Structural inspection requirements before re-roofing and the selection of solid vs. spaced sheathing by roof covering type are also tested.
Safety — 5 exam items
OSHA 29 CFR 1926 governs this section entirely. Fall protection thresholds differ by roof type: for low-slope roofs, the trigger height is 6 feet under §1926.501(b)(10); steep roofs follow §1926.501(b)(11). Personal fall arrest system questions test deceleration distance, free-fall limits, and anchor strength requirements found in §1926.502(d)(19). Guardrail specifications — height, top rail strength, mid-rail placement — are tested under §1926.502(b)(3). Warning line systems and safety monitoring systems appear under §1926.502(f)(1)(i) and §1926.502(h)(1). Ladder questions reference §1926.1053(a)(1)(i) for load ratings and §1926.1053(b)(1) for use requirements. Scaffold capacity and fall protection come from §1926.451.
Worked Sample Questions
Question 1 — Installation of Roof Coverings
The breaking load for clay and concrete roof tiles typically ranges from what values?

Correct answer: B — 250 pounds to 1,000 pounds.
Breaking load depends on tile thickness, cross-section profile, raw material quality, and firing or curing process. Tiles must satisfy minimum breaking strength requirements under ASTM C1167 (clay tile) and ASTM C1492 (concrete tile). The 250–1,000 lb range is the one NRCA specifies; none of the other options match either the floor or the ceiling of that range. Candidates often pick C because they assume heavier materials must be stronger — that reasoning fails here.

Question 2 — Materials
NRCA defines 'impermeable' synthetic sheet underlayments as those with a water vapor transmission rating of less than what value?

NRCA sets 0.1 perms as the threshold below which a synthetic underlayment is classified impermeable. Option D (0.01 perms) sounds more restrictive and fools candidates who guess that "impermeable" implies a stricter number; the NRCA definition is 0.1, not 0.01.

Question 3 — Roofing Structures
When wood structural panel roof sheathing is exposed to the outdoors on the underside only, what minimum exposure durability classification is permitted?
- A. Interior type
- B. Exposure 1 type
- C. Exterior type only
- D. Any classification with waterproof coating
Correct answer: B — Exposure 1 type.
IBC Section 2303.1.5 states that wood structural panels permanently exposed outdoors must be Exterior type — except that roof sheathing exposed to the outdoors on the underside only is permitted to be Exposure 1 type. That exception is the key. Interior type (A) fails regardless of application; a waterproof coating (D) is not an IBC-recognized substitute for an exposure classification.

How to Read Your Score
The passing threshold is 70% — 35 correct out of 50. Treat your first practice attempt as a diagnostic, not a verdict. A score of 55–65% on a first attempt is common and tells you which topic areas need work, not that you cannot pass.
Use the topic-by-topic breakdown the full practice exam provides. If you score 90% on Safety but 50% on Materials, your study time should reflect that gap, not be spread evenly. Materials carries 15 exam items; a weak performance there alone can cost you the exam.
Scoring in the 68–72% range on practice should concern you. That margin leaves almost no room for test-day stress, ambiguous wording, or questions drawn from the parts of the pool you haven't seen yet. Aim for consistent 80%+ scores across multiple full-exam attempts before you schedule the real test. Each full practice attempt draws from 223+ questions, so retaking it several times will expose you to substantially different material without repetition becoming a crutch.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Materials calculation confusion. Candidates mix up ASTM standards — applying D3462 properties to organic-mat shingles or citing C1167 for concrete tile instead of C1492. Read every question stem for the specific material named.
Underlayment slope thresholds. The single-layer vs. double-layer mechanically attached underlayment rules are slope-dependent. Candidates lose points by applying the steeper-slope rule to a low-slope scenario or vice versa. The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep Slope Roof Systems, Section 3.2—Underlayment Design and Installation, is the primary source — know which configuration applies at which slope.
Roof drainage specifics. Secondary scupper and overflow drain questions require exact minimum opening dimensions. Estimating or rounding here costs points.
Slope vs. pitch arithmetic. Roofing Structures questions on rise, run, pitch, and span are short calculations, but candidates confuse pitch (rise/span) with slope (rise/run). A 4:12 slope is not the same as a 4:12 pitch. Write out the formula before solving.
OSHA threshold numbers. Safety questions pivot on specific heights and load values from 29 CFR 1926. Mixing up the 6-foot low-slope trigger with steep-roof requirements, or misremembering scaffold load capacity from §1926.451(a)(1), are repeat errors. Know the exact numbers — approximations fail.
Time management. At 120 minutes for 50 questions, you have 2.4 minutes per question. Installation of Roof Coverings has 18 items — nearly a third of the exam. Don't linger on a single question at the expense of the rest of the paper.
