What This Practice Exam Covers
The Mississippi Building Construction licensing exam consists of 80 questions answered in 180 minutes, with a passing score of 70% (56 correct). The exam covers 11 topic areas spanning site work, concrete, masonry, metals, carpentry, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, safety, general code/plan reading/estimating, and Mississippi One Call requirements.

What You'll Be Tested On
General Code, Plan Reading, and Estimating — 15 items
This is the heaviest single topic on the exam and deserves proportional study time. Questions test IBC occupancy classifications (Use Groups A through U), construction types (Types I–V) and their fire-resistance requirements, and building height and area limitations. Expect to read floor plan symbols, abbreviations, and drawing scales — and to recognize what information appears in sections versus elevations. Estimating questions require actual calculation: quantity takeoffs, board-foot conversions, cost-per-square-foot methods, and multi-step paint or material coverage problems. Know the difference between direct and indirect costs, and between gross and net area.
Concrete — 12 items
This topic rewards candidates who understand why, not just what. Mix design questions cover the water-cementitious materials ratio and its relationship to compressive strength and durability (Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures is the primary source). Portland cement types — I through V — are tested directly; know which type resists sulfate attack, which generates less heat of hydration, and why (Carpentry and Building Construction, Chapter 8, Table 8-1). Admixture questions ask you to distinguish air-entraining, water-reducing, accelerating, and retarding agents by effect. Reinforcing steel questions cover bar grades, concrete cover requirements, bar supports, and the consequences of improper field practices such as tack welding (Placing Reinforcing Bars, Chapter 11). Formwork questions address design loads, material selection, and form release agents.
Safety — 8 items
OSHA 29 CFR 1926 is the governing source. Questions cover fall protection trigger heights and system types (guardrail, safety net, personal fall arrest), scaffold erection and capacity rules, PPE selection, and excavation cave-in protection. Know the specific CFR subparts — for example, §1926.502(b)(1) and §1926.502(b)(3) govern guardrail systems, and Subpart P covers excavation hazards. Fire prevention on job sites — including extinguisher requirements under §1926.150(c)(1)(i) — also appears.
Metals — 10 items
Steel joist designation systems are heavily tested. Know the K-, LH-, DLH-, and CJ-Series joists and joist girders, including how to read a joist designation. The SJI Technical Digest covers erection procedures, bridging requirements by span, erection bridging rules, and end bearing/seat attachment requirements. Questions also address IBC structural steel and cold-formed steel provisions (IBC 2021, Sections 2205.1, 2205.2.1.2, and 2207.1). Expect questions about unloading, storage, and handling — damaged joists and improper storage both appear in the question bank.
Carpentry — 7 items
Platform versus balloon framing, post-and-beam systems, and in-line framing are all fair game. Floor framing questions cover sill plate sizing, girder spans, joist layout, and bridging. Wall framing questions ask about header sizing, cripple and trimmer stud placement, and sheathing attachment. Roof framing requires you to calculate slope and pitch, lay out common and hip rafters, and distinguish ridge, collar tie, and cornice components. Engineered wood products — LVL, glulam, I-joists, and OSB — are tested on grading, applications, and IBC references such as Section 2303.4.1.1.
Thermal and Moisture Protection — 7 items
Know R-values for common insulation types (loose-fill, rigid, batt) and where insulation is required in floor, wall, and roof assemblies. Vapor retarder placement and moisture control logic are tested conceptually. Roof underlayment questions are tied to slope — IBC Section 1505.2 governs asphalt shingle underlayment on steep-slope roofs. Flashing installation at valleys, chimneys, and penetrations is tested both conceptually and in code context. Roof covering types (asphalt shingle, tile, slate, BUR, elastomeric) each have specific installation requirements in the IBC and NRCA Roofing Manual.
Site Work — 6 items
Expect questions on batter board setup, differential leveling, and reading a plot plan for setbacks. Surveying instrument operation — levels, transits, theodolites, laser levels — is tested on procedure, not just identification. Masonry — 6 items
Brick types and ASTM classifications, CMU grades and shapes, and mortar types M, S, N, O, and K (proportions and appropriate applications) are all tested. Know the five masonry wall system types and how flashing, weep holes, and wall ties function in cavity and veneer walls. Brick and block laying technique questions (spreading mortar, building leads, maintaining coursing) appear in the Modern Masonry reference.
Doors and Windows — 3 items
Questions cover door construction types (solid-core vs. hollow-core, raised-panel), operational window styles, and hardware (hinge types, locksets, strike plates). Safety glazing and hazardous location requirements from IBC 2021 Sections 2406.4.2, 2406.4.3, and 2406.4.5 are directly testable. Energy efficiency questions address glazing types, weatherstripping, and thermal performance ratings.
Finishes — 3 items
Drywall type selection (standard, fire-code, moisture-resistant), fastener type, and fastener spacing are tested against IBC Chapter 25 requirements. Mississippi One Call — 3 items
Mississippi Code §77-13-9(2)(a) and related statutes govern advance notice timeframes, emergency excavation procedures, operator marking color codes, tolerance zone distances, and damage reporting obligations. These questions are precise — wrong timeframes or wrong color codes cost points.

Sample 1 — Estimating (General Code, Plan Reading, and Estimating)
A 2,400 sq ft wall requires two coats of paint. Coverage is 350 sq ft per gallon. How many gallons are needed?

Correct Answer: A — 14 gallons
Multiply total wall area by the number of coats: 2,400 × 2 = 4,800 sq ft of total coverage needed. Divide by the coverage rate: 4,800 ÷ 350 = 13.7 gallons. Always round up on material estimates — you cannot buy a fraction of a gallon and leave the job short. The answer is 14 gallons. This type of multi-step estimating calculation is common in the General Code and Estimating topic.
Sample 2 — Reinforcing Steel (Concrete)
An ironworker tack welds a crossing reinforcing bar to hold it in position. What is the potential consequence of this field practice on bar strength?

Field tack welding (sometimes called spot welding) of crossing reinforcing bars creates a notch effect at the point of contact. Testing has shown this can reduce the bar's load capacity to as low as 35–40 percent of its original strength — a catastrophic reduction. Sample 3 — Steel Framing Rough Openings (Metals)
In a nonload-bearing steel-framed partition wall, how much extra width should you allow on each side of an interior door opening for wood studs?

Correct Answer: B — 1½ inches
Wood studs are installed on each side of interior and closet door openings in steel-framed partitions to provide backing for hinges and the strike plate. The required allowance is 1½ inches per side. Forgetting this step — or guessing 1 inch — is a common field error that the exam specifically targets. How to Read Your Score
The passing score is 70%, which means 56 correct out of 80 questions on the real exam.
Treat your first practice attempt as a diagnostic, not a judgment. A score of 50–60% on the first full attempt is normal and tells you where to direct your study, not that you should abandon the exam. A score of 65–68% on practice is closer than it sounds but still represents meaningful risk — candidates who score near the passing threshold on practice frequently fall just short on the real exam when test-day pressure and unfamiliar question phrasing are factored in.
Use the topic-by-topic breakdown the full practice exam provides. If you score below 60% in Concrete (12 items) or General Code, Plan Reading, and Estimating (15 items), those two topics alone can swing your total score by 5–6 points. Prioritize topics by both your deficit and their item count. A weak score in Doors and Windows (3 items) matters less than a weak score in Safety (8 items) or Metals (10 items).
Retake the full practice exam with fresh question sets until you consistently score 76% or higher before scheduling the real exam.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Multi-step estimating calculations account for a large share of errors in the General Code, Plan Reading, and Estimating section (15 items). Candidates stop one step early — computing single-coat coverage when two coats are specified, or forgetting to round up rather than down.
Concrete cover and bar support rules trip up candidates who memorize one value and apply it everywhere. The required cover changes based on exposure condition, and the exam tests this variation directly.
Steel joist designation systems in the Metals topic (10 items) cause losses when candidates confuse K-Series, LH-Series, and DLH-Series naming conventions or misread span and bridging rules from the SJI Technical Digest.
Mississippi One Call timeframes and color codes in the One Call topic (3 items) are easy points to lose if you guess rather than memorize the specific statutory requirements under MS Code §77-13-9(2)(a).
IBC construction type and occupancy combinations in General Code cause errors when candidates mix up which types of construction apply to which occupancy groups, or confuse fire-resistance ratings for interior walls versus exterior walls.
Time management is also a real factor — 80 questions in 180 minutes is 2 minutes 15 seconds per question. Calculation-heavy questions in Concrete and Estimating can consume 4–5 minutes if you are not careful, leaving insufficient time for the Safety and Metals sections.
