The real Mississippi Excavation and Grading exam is 40 questions in 120 minutes. You need a 70% — 28 correct answers — to pass.

This practice exam gives you two options.

What You'll Be Tested On

General Regulations and One Call — 15 Items

This is the second-heaviest section and it is almost entirely Mississippi statute. You need to know Mississippi Code Title 77, Chapter 13 in detail.

Mississippi 811 one-call notification requirements and procedures. You must know who is required to notify 811, under what circumstances, and what the one-call center's role is. The statute defines these obligations specifically — not generally.

Advance notice timeframes and ticket validity periods. The exam tests exact timeframes — how far in advance you must notify before excavating, and how long a locate ticket remains valid. Numbers matter here. Off by a day is a wrong answer.

Definitions of key terms. Section 77-13-3 carries a heavy load of definition questions. Terms like "excavation," "operator," "facility," "tolerance zone," "excavator," and "working day" all appear with statutory definitions. Know these cold. The exam will swap a word or flip a definition to see if you're reading carefully.

Excavator duties within the tolerance zone and pre-marking requirements. Once you're inside the tolerance zone — the area within 18 inches on either side of a marked facility — your obligations change. You must know what hand-digging or other safe practices are required, and what pre-marking with white paint means before you call 811.

Emergency and impending emergency excavation exceptions. The statute carves out specific exceptions. You need to know the difference between an emergency and an impending emergency, and what reduced-notice procedures apply under each.

Operator responsibilities for marking and PRIS reporting. Operators of underground facilities have their own obligations — marking within required timeframes, using standard color codes, and reporting under the positive response information system. These are tested from the operator's perspective, not just the excavator's.


Excavating and Grading — 20 Items

This is the heaviest section. Half your exam is here. Expect calculation questions and technical classification questions drawn primarily from Pipe and Excavation Contracting and the Mississippi Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction.

Excavation classifications. You must know the difference between unclassified, rock, muck, borrow, excess, and surplus excavation. These aren't informal labels — they have specific contract and specification meanings that affect payment and site management.

Embankment construction and compaction requirements. The Mississippi Standard Specifications cover lift thickness, compaction methods, moisture requirements, and material placement. Questions pull from pages 108–124 of the 2004 edition. Know what makes an acceptable embankment layer.

Cut and fill quantity estimation — cross-section and average end area methods. This is where math shows up. The Cross Section Method treats cut areas as truncated prisms. The Average End Area Method averages two adjacent cross-sectional areas and multiplies by the distance between them. You must be able to set up and execute these calculations under time pressure.

Soil volume conversions — bank, loose, and compacted cubic yards. Soil expands when excavated (swell) and shrinks when compacted. Conversion between bank cubic yards, loose cubic yards, and compacted cubic yards requires using swell and shrinkage factors. Get these conversions wrong and your quantities are wrong.

Clearing and grubbing and site preparation. Know what is required before excavation begins — what must be removed, to what depth, and what the specifications say about stump and root removal.

Equipment productivity. Expect questions on bulldozer and excavator output, cycle times, and how to calculate how much material a machine can move in a shift.


Safety — Code of Federal Regulations — 5 Items

Five questions, all drawn from 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P and related sections.

Cave-in protection. Know sloping, benching, shoring, and trench shield/box systems — when each is required, and what slope angles apply to each OSHA soil type (Type A, B, and C) per Appendix A to Subpart P.

Competent person duties. The competent person must inspect excavations daily and after any event that could change conditions. Know what triggers an inspection and what authority the competent person has.

Soil classification. Appendix A to Subpart P defines Type A, B, and C soils — and the conditions that automatically downgrade a classification (fissured soil, vibration, previously disturbed soil). These appear as scenario questions.

Hazardous atmospheres and rescue. Know when atmospheric testing is required and what rescue equipment must be on-site.

Access, egress, and traffic protection. Per §1926.651(d), employees exposed to vehicular traffic must wear high-visibility garments. Ladders or other safe egress must be within 25 feet of any worker in a trench deeper than 4 feet.


Worked Sample Questions

Sample 1 — Excavating and Grading: Cross Section Method

Question: When using the Cross Section Method for earthwork estimating, what type of three-dimensional solid is most commonly encountered, and how is its volume calculated?

  • A. A wedge — volume equals one-half times the length times width times height
  • B. A cone — volume equals one-third times the base area times height
  • C. A truncated prism — volume equals the base area times the average height of the corners
  • D. A cylinder — volume equals pi times the radius squared times height

Correct Answer: C

The truncated prism is the standard solid the Cross Section Method works with. Each station interval in your earthwork takeoff forms a prism with unequal corner heights. To get its volume, average all four corner heights, then multiply by the base area. This converts an irregular shape into an equivalent rectangular prism. Sample 2 — General Regulations and One Call: Civil Penalties

Question: Under Mississippi's damage prevention enforcement provisions, what is the maximum civil penalty per incident for a third or subsequent violation occurring within a five-year period?

  • B. $500.00
  • C. $2,500.00
  • D. $1,000.00

Correct Answer: C

Section 77-13-27(1)(c) sets the cap at $2,500 per incident for a third or subsequent violation within five years. The $5,000 figure under subsection (d) is reserved for violations involving gross negligence or willful and wanton misconduct — a different category entirely. The exam will put both numbers in front of you. Read the violation category in the question before you pick.


Sample 3 — Safety CFR: High-Visibility PPE

Question: What personal protective equipment must employees wear when exposed to public vehicular traffic at an excavation site?

  • A. Orange safety cones placed around the employee combined with standard work clothing
  • B. Full-body reflective suits and face shields when working within 15 feet of active traffic lanes
  • C. Hard hats and steel-toed boots rated for traffic zone work
  • D. Warning vests or other suitable garments marked with or made of reflectorized or high-visibility material

Correct Answer: D

Per §1926.651(d), the rule is plain: employees exposed to public vehicular traffic shall be provided with, and shall wear, warning vests or other suitable garments made of or marked with reflectorized or high-visibility material. The other options sound plausible but have no basis in the cited regulation.


How to Read Your Score

Passing requires 70% — 28 out of 40 on the real exam.

On your first practice attempt, treat your score as a diagnostic, not a verdict. Most people underperform on the first run simply because they haven't calibrated to the question style yet. What matters is which topics you missed and by how much.

A score in the low 60s on practice means you need more study time before you're ready. A score near 70% on practice is not a green light — that's close enough to fail on test day if questions trend harder than your attempt. Target 80%+ consistently on the full practice exam before you schedule.

Use your topic breakdown after each attempt. If you dropped points on Excavating and Grading, that section has 20 items on the real exam — every missed concept there costs you more than a miss in the 5-item Safety section. Prioritize accordingly. Retake the full practice exam with fresh questions from the 326+ pool until your weak topics come up and you're answering them correctly.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Soil volume conversions. Bank, loose, and compacted cubic yards are not interchangeable. Candidates who skip the conversion step — or apply the wrong factor — get the quantity wrong. The exam will give you a number without telling you which unit it is. Read the question carefully.

Definition questions in 77-13-3. The statute uses specific language. "Working day" is not the same as "calendar day." "Tolerance zone" has a precise measurement. Candidates who paraphrase definitions instead of memorizing them pick the plausible-sounding wrong answer.

Advance notice timeframes. The exact number of hours or days required before excavation is a hard fact. Estimating it from memory without having studied the statute is a common mistake.

Soil classification downgrade conditions. Appendix A to Subpart P of 29 CFR Part 1926 lists conditions that force a soil to be reclassified as Type B or Type C even if it would otherwise qualify as Type A. Candidates who memorize the base definitions without learning the downgrade triggers miss these scenario questions.

Running out of time on Excavating and Grading. With 20 items in this section, multi-step calculation questions can eat your clock. If you get stuck on a quantity estimate, mark it and move on. You have 3 minutes per question on average across the full exam.
