What This Practice Exam Covers
The Mississippi Residential Plumbing licensing exam contains 80 questions answered within 240 minutes. A score of 70% (56 correct) is required to pass. The exam spans 12 topic areas drawn from the International Residential Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code, and federal OSHA safety regulations (29 CFR 1926).

What You'll Be Tested On
General Plumbing Knowledge and Regulations — 15 items (the largest topic)
This is the heaviest-weighted section and touches permit applications, inspection procedures, and code enforcement authority. Questions ask about specific IRC sections governing permit requirements and exemptions (IRC R105.2, R105.5, R105.6), stop work orders, and penalty authority. You'll need to know the minimum pipe sheathing thickness to prevent galvanic contact with steel framing (see International Residential Code For One- And Two-Fa, P2603.3). Protection from freezing, physical damage, and corrosion is also tested, including nail plate requirements and burial depths.
Drain, Waste and Vent and Sewers — 17 items (the single largest topic)
Expect the most questions here. You must know drainage fixture unit (DFU) values from IPC 2021, Table 709.1 and Table 709.2, slope requirements for horizontal drainage piping (IPC 2021, Table 704.1), cleanout placement rules (IPC 2021, Section 708.1.2, 708.1.4, 708.1.5, 708.1.10), and pipe material approvals from IPC 2021, Tables 702.1, 702.2, and 702.3. Vent sizing from IPC 2021, Table 906.1 and wet vent rules under IPC 2021, Section 909.3 are frequently tested.
Isometric Analysis — 9 items
These questions present riser/isometric diagrams and require you to trace DFU loads from remote fixtures to the building drain, size branch drains and stacks using IPC 2021, Table 710.1(1) and Table 710.1(2), and size the building drain and sewer based on accumulated load and slope. Piping, Valves, and Controls — 6 items
Know approved water service materials, pipe joint methods (solvent cement, heat fusion, press-connect, solder/braze), and backflow prevention device types. Water hammer arrestor requirements, pressure-reducing valve locations, and cross-connection control provisions (IPC 2021, Section 608.9.1, 608.9.2) appear regularly.
Specialty Applications — 6 items
This topic covers graywater reuse systems, rainwater collection, subsurface soil absorption sizing, solar thermal freeze protection, and boiler safety controls. Questions draw from IRC sections including M2002.2, M2002.3, M2003.1.1, and M2101.22.4 for boiler and expansion tank requirements.
Fuel Gas — 5 items
Gas piping material approvals, pipe sizing using IFGC capacity tables (IFGC, Table 402.4(25), Table 402.4(28), Table 402.4(32), Table 402.4(35)), pressure testing requirements (2018 International Fuel Gas Code, Page 74, Section 406.4.2), and venting system categories all appear. Know the combustion air methods and appliance clearance rules from IRC Sections G2407.5.1 and G2407.6.1.
Piping — 5 items
Focuses on material standards for water supply (copper, CPVC, PEX, PEX-AL-PEX, PE-RT), DWV pipe materials (ABS, PVC, cast iron per ASTM A888), joint methods, water service separation requirements, and cleanout location and spacing rules.
Safety — 4 items
Drawn entirely from 29 CFR 1926. Expect questions on PPE requirements (§1926.21(b)(2)), excavation cave-in protection and the competent person role (§1926.652(a)(1)), confined space permit procedures (§1926.1204(e)(3)), fire extinguisher requirements (§1926.150(c)(1)(i)), and flammable liquid storage (§1926.152(b)(1)). These questions are straightforward if you know the specific regulatory thresholds.
Fixtures and Equipment — 4 items
Minimum fixture counts by occupancy from IPC 2021, Table 403.1; fixture clearances from ICC A117.1-2017, Section 604.4; and water heater T&P relief valve requirements from IRC Section P2804.4 are all testable.
Water Supply — 4 items
Covers backflow prevention device selection, minimum system pressure, pressure-reducing valve settings, and water hammer arrestor placement per IRC Sections P2903.4.1 and P2903.4.2.
LP Gas — 3 items
Know two-stage regulator systems, allowable indoor LP-gas pressures, approved piping materials, and plastic pipe limitations (underground only, maximum 30 psig operating pressure).

Correct Answer: C — 3 DFU
Per IPC 2021, Table 709.2, when a fixture is not specifically listed, its DFU value is determined by trap or drain size. A 2-inch drain or trap outlet equals 3 DFU. This table is the fallback whenever a fixture isn't in Table 709.1. Candidates who default to 2 DFU (matching the pipe diameter in inches) make a very common mistake — the DFU value and the pipe diameter are different numbers.

Question 2 — General Plumbing Knowledge: Pipe Sheathing Thickness
When metallic piping (other than cast iron, ductile iron, or galvanized steel) must be protected from direct contact with steel framing or concrete, what is the minimum required thickness of the plastic sheathing material?

The code sets a precise threshold here: the sheathing must be plastic and at least 0.008 inch (8 mil) thick. This isn't a general estimate — it's a specific dimensional requirement. Many candidates confuse this with other protection thicknesses or guess higher. The rule applies specifically to metallic pipe (excluding the exempt materials) passing through or in contact with concrete, masonry, or steel framing.

Question 3 — Isometric Analysis: Fitting Loss Factor in Pipe Sizing
When using the segmented loss method to size water distribution piping, the maximum developed length is determined by multiplying the actual pipe length from the source of supply to the most remote fixture by what factor?

How to Read Your Score
The passing threshold is 70%, or 56 correct out of 80 questions. If your first full practice attempt lands in the 60–69% range, treat that as useful diagnostic information — not failure. A first score tells you which of the 12 topics need focused review, not whether you can pass the real exam.
Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each attempt strategically. A low score on Drain, Waste and Vent (17 items) costs you far more than a gap in Fuel Oil (2 items), so prioritize accordingly. If you're scoring 75% or above consistently across multiple attempts with different question sets, your preparation is on solid ground.
Scoring right at 70% on practice — particularly on a first or second attempt — is not a comfortable margin. The real exam won't repeat questions you've memorized; it tests whether you understand the underlying code logic. Push for consistent scores of 78%+ on the full 80-question exam before sitting for the real thing. Retaking the full practice exam multiple times is worthwhile precisely because the 303+ question pool means you'll encounter new material on each attempt.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Misreading DFU tables. The DWV and Isometric Analysis sections together carry 26 questions — nearly a third of the exam. Confusing Table 709.1 (listed fixtures) with Table 709.2 (unlisted fixtures by trap size), or pulling DFU values from the wrong column in Table 710.1(1) vs. Table 710.1(2), will cascade into wrong pipe sizing answers.
Wrong slope applied to drain sizing. Slope requirements for horizontal drainage piping are specific to pipe diameter, and candidates routinely apply a single slope to all pipe sizes. IPC 2021, Table 704.1 has differentiated values — know them by size.
Fuel gas table selection. IFGC Tables 402.4(25), 402.4(28), 402.4(32), and 402.4(35) are material- and pressure-specific. Choosing the wrong table — even with correct math — produces a wrong answer.
Missing the factor in water supply sizing. The 1.2 multiplier (E104.1) versus the 1.5 factor (E103.3) distinction is a documented source of errors. Read the question stem carefully to identify which method is being applied.
Skipping safety specifics. The 29 CFR 1926 questions reward candidates who know exact thresholds — cave-in protection triggers, confined space permit requirements under §1926.1204(e)(3), and fire extinguisher minimums under §1926.150(c)(1)(i). Vague familiarity isn't enough.
Time management on isometric questions. These 9 items require multi-step calculations. Running short on time here is common — practice working through full isometric problems under timed conditions.
