What This Practice Exam Covers
The Oklahoma Natural Gas Journeyman licensing exam is 30 questions. You have 90 minutes to finish it. You need a 70% — that's 21 correct answers — to pass.
This practice exam gives you two ways to prepare:

What You'll Be Tested On
The exam covers four topic areas. Here's what each one demands.
General Fuel Gas Piping — Knowledge, Definitions, and Regulations (8 items)
This is the second-heaviest section on the exam. Eight questions come from here, so gaps cost you.
Testing and Inspection questions expect you to know pressure test requirements — what pressure is required, how long the test must hold, and what constitutes a passing test. You'll also need to know the purging rules under IFGC 2024, Section 406.7.1 and Table 406.7.1.1: when a system must be purged outdoors versus indoors, and what pipe size and length thresholds trigger mandatory outdoor purging. Section 406.4, 406.4.1, and 406.4.2 cover leak checks and test media — know whether air, nitrogen, or gas is acceptable under specific conditions.
Pipe Material Properties and Requirements questions pull from IFGC 2024 Section 403 and related provisions. Know which materials are approved for underground installation, which are prohibited indoors, and what joining methods are permitted for each material type. Definitions from Section 202 appear on this exam — if a question asks what a term means, the answer is in that section.
Expect questions on permit requirements (Sections 105.1, 105.1.2, 105.3.1) and the scope of the code (Section 101.2.2). Don't skip these — they're easy points if you've read them.
Pipe Sizing (4 items)
Four questions, but they can each take several minutes if you're not prepared. Most of them require you to use a sizing table correctly.
Maximum gas demand calculation means adding up connected appliance BTU/hr ratings and converting to cubic feet per hour. Know the formula and how to handle diversity.
Pipe sizing methods — longest length, branch length, and hybrid pressure — each use the sizing tables differently. Longest length is the most common method tested. Know what "developed length" means and how to measure it.
Sizing tables are the core skill here. The exam tests:
- Schedule 40 metallic pipe at various pressures and pressure drops (IFGC 2024, Table 402.4 and Table 402.4(1))
- CSST by EHD flow designation (Tables 402.4(15) through 402.4(19))
- Semirigid copper tubing
You must know how to enter the correct table based on pipe material, system pressure, and allowable pressure drop. Using the wrong table gives you a wrong answer even if your math is perfect.
Allowable pressure drop and minimum appliance supply pressure — know standard pressure drop limits for low-pressure systems (typically 0.5 in. w.c. for most residential) and what minimum pressure appliances require at the connection point.
Pipe Installation (15 items)
Half the exam. This is where the exam is won or lost.
Indoor and Outdoor Installation Requirements — know clearances, prohibited locations, and requirements for pipe passing through walls, floors, and foundations. Sections 404.4, 404.5, 404.7.3, 404.8.1, and 404.9 are all cited in the question bank.
Gas Pressure Regulators — Section 410.1 covers regulator installation. Know where regulators must be installed, venting requirements, and what regulators are not required.
Structural Safety — Section 305.3, 305.3.1, 305.4, and 305.5 cover protection from physical damage. Know notching and boring limits and when a steel plate is required.
Hangers and Supports — Section 415.1 and Table 415.1 specify maximum support spacing by pipe material and size. These are directly testable numbers.
Concealed Locations — Sections 404.12, 404.12.1, 404.14.1, and 404.16 restrict what pipe can run concealed, what connections are allowed, and what enclosure requirements apply to CSST in concealed spaces.
Direction Changes — know fitting types and what is permitted at direction changes in concealed locations.
Safety (3 items)
Three questions from OSHA 1926 rules covering excavations, ventilation and confined space, PPE, signs and barricades, fall protection, and ladders and scaffolds. The cited OSHA references in the question bank include 29 CFR 1926 pages and specific sections covering fire prevention (1926.150) and general site safety. Know the basics: when shoring or sloping is required in an excavation, what constitutes a confined space, and minimum PPE requirements for gas work.
Worked Sample Questions
Question 1 — Pipe Installation
You are a journeyman installing gas piping in a concrete slab using a conduit with both ends terminating indoors. How far must the conduit extend beyond the point where the gas pipe emerges from the floor?
- A. 2 inches
- B. 1 inch
- C. 4 inches
- D. 6 inches
Correct Answer: A — 2 inches
Per IFGC 2024, Section 404.8.2, when a conduit originates and terminates within the same building, it must extend not less than 2 inches beyond the point where the pipe emerges from the floor. This protects the pipe from concrete abrasion at the floor surface. The wrong answers (1, 4, and 6 inches) don't appear in this code section — they're plausible-sounding numbers designed to catch anyone who's guessing.
Question 2 — General Fuel Gas Piping
A gas piping system has a design operating pressure of 3 psig. According to purging requirements, why must this system be purged outdoors?
- A. The design operating gas pressure is greater than 2 psig
- B. The system serves more than three appliances simultaneously
- C. The piping volume exceeds 500 cubic feet
- D. The piping contains a section of pipe 6 inches or larger
Correct Answer: A — Design operating pressure greater than 2 psig
IFGC 2024, Section 406.7.1 requires outdoor purging when the design operating pressure exceeds 2 psig. Three psig clears that threshold directly. The pipe size and length criteria in Table 406.7.1.1 are a separate trigger — a 4-inch pipe at 20 feet would exceed the 15-foot threshold — but the pressure criterion alone is sufficient and is the cleanest answer here. Options B, C, and D don't match any threshold in Section 406.7.1.
Question 3 — Pipe Sizing
In CSST sizing tables, what does EHD stand for, and what does a greater EHD value indicate?
- A. External Housing Diameter; greater wall thickness
- B. Estimated Heat Dissipation; greater thermal conductivity
- C. Effective Hose Diameter; greater corrosion resistance
- D. Equivalent Hydraulic Diameter; greater gas capacity
Correct Answer: D — Equivalent Hydraulic Diameter; greater gas capacity
Per the notes to IFGC 2024, Table 402.4(15), EHD stands for Equivalent Hydraulic Diameter. It measures the relative hydraulic efficiency between tubing sizes. Higher EHD = more gas capacity. The other three options sound plausible but none of those definitions appear anywhere in the code. If you see an EHD question, go straight to D.
How to Read Your Score
Passing requires 70% — 21 out of 30. On the full practice exam, treat your first attempt as a diagnostic, not a final grade. A first-attempt score tells you where your knowledge is solid and where it isn't, not whether you'll pass the real exam.
Use the topic breakdown after each attempt. If you're dropping points on Pipe Sizing, go back to the sizing tables and practice entering them correctly for different pipe materials and pressure conditions. If Pipe Installation is dragging your score down, that costs you more — 15 questions come from that section.
Scoring near 70% on practice means you're in the ballpark, but not ready. You want a consistent 80%+ on practice before you sit for the real thing. The question pool has 122+ items, so retaking the full exam gives you fresh questions and a better read on your actual knowledge versus lucky guesses. If you're getting the same questions wrong across multiple attempts, that's your study list.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Wrong sizing table. The exam gives you scenarios that require a specific table — CSST by EHD, Schedule 40 at a specific pressure drop, semirigid copper. If you grab the wrong table, you get the wrong answer even if you do everything else right. Know which table applies before you look at the numbers.
Misreading pressure units. Questions mix psig, in. w.c., and pressure drop values. Confusing 0.5 in. w.c. drop with 0.5 psig is a common mistake that leads to wrong pipe sizes.
Skipping steps in gas demand calculations. Maximum demand questions require you to add all connected loads, convert correctly, then size. Missing an appliance or skipping the unit conversion drops you to the wrong row in the table.
Pipe Installation details. Fifteen questions means any weakness here shows up in your score. Candidates lose points on specific dimensions — conduit extension lengths, support spacing intervals from Table 415.1, and clearances in concealed locations — because they remember the concept but not the number.
Running out of time on sizing. Table lookups take time. If you spend five minutes on one sizing question, the straightforward Installation and Safety questions at the end suffer. Work efficiently — know the table entry process cold before exam day.
