Sample 1 — South Carolina Code of Laws regulating alarm contractors

Question: In the statutes governing South Carolina alarm businesses, the term "contractor" is defined as which of the following?

  • A. A natural person who installs or services alarm systems
  • B. An individual registered as a primary qualifying party
  • C. Any person who submits a bid for alarm system work
  • D. An entity licensed to engage in the alarm system business

Correct Answer: D

S.C. Code Ann. § 40-79-20(7) defines "contractor" as an entity licensed to engage in the burglar or fire alarm system business. Note that § 40-79-20(13) defines "individual" separately as a natural person, and the qualifying party (§ 40-79-20(17)-(18)) is the person who qualifies the licensed entity — not the contractor itself.
