What You'll Be Tested On
Plan Reading and Estimating — 4 items
Four questions don't sound like much, but they reward candidates who can actually use an architect's scale, read a floor plan, and calculate quantities. Expect to identify line types, dimension conventions, and standard symbols on architectural drawings. You may need to interpret a section view or read a finish schedule. Estimating questions cover the three cost estimate types — pre-design, unit-cost, and quantity takeoff — and what each is appropriate for. Know the difference between a quantity takeoff and a rough order-of-magnitude estimate.
Windows and Doors — 8 items
One of the heavier sections. You need to know door construction inside out: solid-core vs. hollow-core, raised-panel vs. flush, and where each is used. Pre-hung, pocket, bifold, bypass, and folding door installation are all fair game. Hardware details matter — hinge gains, lockset types, strike plate alignment. For windows, know the components of a double-hung, casement, awning, hopper, and sliding unit. Energy efficiency questions focus on U-values, low-e coatings, and glazing types. Associated Trades — 9 items
The largest topic on the exam. This covers insulation R-values for batts, loose-fill, rigid board, and spray foam; vapor retarder placement in walls, floors, and crawl spaces; and ventilation requirements for attics and crawl spaces — including specific airflow rates cited in the SC Building Code. Wood flooring questions cover species grading, acclimation, and acceptable moisture content before installation. Resilient flooring (vinyl sheet and tile) and ceramic tile installation methods appear here too. Know the difference between a Class I and Class II vapor retarder, and where each belongs.
Rough Carpentry — 8 items
Wall framing terminology is heavily tested: studs, plates, headers, cripple studs, trimmer studs, rough sills. Floor framing adds sill plates, joists, girders, rim joists, and bridging. Roof framing questions cover common, hip, valley, and jack rafters, and the difference between a ridge board and a ridge beam. Sheathing installation — plywood and OSB, nailing schedules — appears alongside platform framing, balloon framing, and post-and-beam systems. Lumber grading, moisture content, and preservative treatment requirements under the SC Building Code are tested. Expect estimation problems using tables from Carpentry and Building Construction, Chapters 15 and 16.
Finish Carpentry — 6 items
Door hanging procedure, casing styles, reveal layout, and mitered vs. butted frames. Molding installation — crown, base, chair rail, picture rail — including when to cope and when to miter. Stair trim: skirt boards, treads, risers, newel posts, balusters, and handrail systems. Cabinet installation requires knowing how to establish reference lines, sequence base vs. wall cabinets, and handle countertop layout. The correct top-down installation sequence (ceiling treatments first, then standing moldings, then running moldings) is a real exam topic.
Siding — 4 items
Know your siding materials: wood bevel, wood shingle, vinyl, fiber cement, plywood panel, stucco, and brick veneer. Moisture protection questions focus on weather-resistive barriers — building paper, housewrap, flashing — and how a drainage plane works. For bevel siding, understand how to use a story pole, set exposure, and maintain coursing. Drywall — 8 items
Tied for one of the heaviest sections. You need to know gypsum panel types cold: standard, Type X, Type C, moisture-resistant, abuse-resistant, and flexible. Level 0 through Level 5 finish definitions — what each level means and where it applies. Joint treatment sequence: embedding tape, fill coat, finish coat. Setting-type vs. drying-type compound — when to use each. Fastener types and spacing for wood and steel framing. Corner bead and control joint placement. Fire-rated assembly classifications from the Gypsum Construction Handbook.
Metal Stud Framing — 8 items
Know the STUFL designation system: Stud, Track, U-channel, Furring, L-header. Mil thickness and gauge matter — load-bearing vs. non-load-bearing applications are not interchangeable. Understand the prescriptive vs. performance design methods. Fastening methods include screws, welding, clinching, and drive pins. OSHA Safety — 5 items
Fall protection under Subpart M: guardrail height, leading edge requirements. PPE — what the employer must provide and pay for. Permissible exposure limits for hazardous substances. Asbestos: identification, four classes of work, and abatement procedures. Flammable liquid storage and fire extinguisher placement. Electrical safety and GFCI requirements on construction sites. Questions cite specific 29 CFR 1926 sections.

Question 1 — Associated Trades: Crawl Space Ventilation Rate
For continuously operated mechanical ventilation of a crawl space, what airflow rate is required per square foot of ground surface area?
A. 1.0 cfm per 100 sq ft
B. 1.0 cfm per 150 sq ft
C. 1.0 cfm per 50 sq ft
D. 1.0 cfm per 25 sq ft
Correct Answer: C
The SC Building Code 2021, Section 1202.4.3.1 sets the rate at 1.0 cfm for every 50 square feet of crawl space ground area when mechanical ventilation runs continuously. The ground surface must also be covered with a Class I vapor retarder. The distractors — 100, 150, and 25 square feet — are not code values. This is a straight code-recall question. Memorize the 1-per-50 ratio.
Question 2 — Windows and Doors: Trimwork Installation Sequence
When trimming out doors, what is the recommended order for installing ceiling treatments, standing moldings, and running moldings?
A. Standing moldings first, then running moldings, then ceiling treatments last
B. All moldings simultaneously, working left to right
C. Running moldings first, then standing moldings, then ceiling treatments last
D. Ceiling treatments and cornice trim first, then standing moldings, then running moldings
Correct Answer: D
Work top-down. Ceiling treatments and cornice trim go on first because installing them requires ladders and scaffolding that will damage standing moldings if they're already in place. Standing moldings (door and window casings) go second. Running moldings — chair rail, picture rail — go last because they butt against the standing moldings. Question 3 — Rough Carpentry: Rim Joist Estimation
How many lineal feet of rim (band) joist are needed, and how many 16-ft pieces is that? (Figure FL-2)
A. 148 lin ft; 10 pieces
B. 52 lin ft; 4 pieces
C. 96 lin ft; 6 pieces
D. 96 lin ft; 7 pieces
Correct Answer: C
The rim joist runs along the two long walls where joists terminate: 2 × 48 ft = 96 lineal feet. Divide by 16-ft stock length: 96 ÷ 16 = exactly 6 pieces. The end joists on the short walls count with the floor joists, not the rim joist total. Don't round up here — 6.00 is exact, so 6 pieces is correct, not 7. How to Read Your Score
Passing requires 70% — 42 out of 60 correct. On your first full practice attempt, treat your score as a diagnostic, not a verdict.
If you score below 60%, focus on the heavy topics first: Associated Trades (9 items), Drywall (8 items), Metal Stud Framing (8 items), Rough Carpentry (8 items), and Windows and Doors (8 items). Together those five areas account for 41 of 60 exam questions. Getting those right carries the exam.
If you score between 60–70%, you're close but not safe. A practice score at the borderline means the real exam — with different question phrasing — can tip you either way. Work the topic-by-topic breakdown. Find the one or two areas dragging your score and drill those specifically.
Scoring 75% or above on practice, consistently across multiple attempts, is a reasonable signal that you're ready. One strong attempt isn't enough. The 407+ question pool means each attempt tests different specifics.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Wrong units on ventilation and insulation questions. The crawl space mechanical ventilation rate is 1.0 cfm per 50 sq ft, not 100 or 150. R-value questions sometimes test specific values for rigid foam vs. fiberglass batt — know which product hits which number.
Confusing load-bearing and non-load-bearing metal stud requirements. Gauge, mil thickness, and fastening methods differ. Treating a non-load-bearing spec as interchangeable with a structural application costs points on multiple Metal Stud Framing questions.
Skipping steps on estimation problems. Plan Reading and Rough Carpentry both include multi-step quantity calculations. Candidates compute the linear footage correctly, then forget to divide by stock length — or round up when the answer divides evenly. Work every step.
Misidentifying drywall finish levels. Level 0 through Level 5 have specific definitions. Test takers confuse Level 3 (primer ready, textured surfaces) with Level 4 (primer ready, flat paint). The Gypsum Construction Handbook and Finishing Drywall Systems distinctions are exact.
Getting OSHA specifics wrong. OSHA questions test precise thresholds: guardrail heights, PEL values, fire extinguisher placement distances. Approximate answers fail. Use 29 CFR 1926 section numbers as memory anchors.
Trimwork sequencing errors. Finish Carpentry questions on casing reveal, coped joints, and installation order trip candidates who know the technique but not the sequence. Top-down order is the rule.
