What This Practice Exam Covers
The South Carolina Roofing licensing exam consists of 65 questions answered in 180 minutes, with a passing score of 70% (46 correct). The exam spans eight topic areas covering everything from OSHA fall protection to steep-slope installation details, metal panel systems, elastomeric membranes, and built-up bituminous roofing.

What You'll Be Tested On
Safety — 5 items
Five questions may feel light, but OSHA violations are easy points to lose. You must know fall protection triggers for both low-slope and steep roofs under 29 CFR 1926 §1926.501(b)(10) and §1926.501(b)(11), guardrail top-rail height requirements per §1926.502(b)(3), and personal fall arrest system criteria per §1926.502(f)(1)(i). Warning line and safety monitoring systems, scaffold capacity and fall protection under §1926.451(a)(1) and §1926.451(g)(1), and ladder safety requirements under §1926.1053(a)(1)(i) and §1926.1053(b)(1) are all testable. Know the specific heights, load ratings, and system components — not just the general concept.
Roofing – Substrate — 8 items
This section is heavier than it looks. Questions test plywood and OSB minimum thickness by rafter spacing using South Carolina Building Code 2021, Table 2304.8(3) and Table 2304.8(5), deflection limits from Table 1604.3, and fastener withdrawal resistance. You must distinguish between structural concrete, lightweight insulating concrete, cementitious wood fiber, and steel deck — each has different attachment and compatibility requirements. Pre-installation inspection standards and the code treatment requirements for preservative-treated and fire-retardant-treated panels (SC Building Code 2021, Section 2303.2.8 and Section 2304.8.2) also appear.
Roofing – Steep — 22 items
This is the dominant section — roughly one-third of the entire exam. Expect questions on asphalt shingle UL/ASTM fire and wind classifications (ASTM D3161, ASTM D7158), minimum slopes by covering type from SC Building Code 2021, Table 1507.1.1(1) and Table 1507.1.1(2), and underlayment selection at various slopes. Flashing details — valley types, drip edge placement, step flashing, counter flashing, and cricket/saddle design — are heavily tested. Clay tile profiles (flat, S-tile, interlocking, pan-and-cover), concrete tile ASTM C1492 standards, slate grading and exposure calculations, and batten system requirements all appear. Calculation questions on material quantities (ice-and-water shield rolls, shingle squares, valley flashing lengths) are common in this section.
Roofing – Metal Panel — 6 items
Know the difference between architectural and structural metal panel systems and their minimum slope requirements. Questions test metal types — galvanized, Galvalume, aluminum, copper, stainless steel — and their corrosion characteristics. Panel profiles (standing seam, flat seam, batten seam, snap-lock) and seaming methods are tested, as are fastener compatibility rules and wind-uplift attachment requirements. Underlayment selection for architectural systems and appropriate structural substrates (steel deck, purlins, cold-formed framing) round out this section.
Roofing – Metal Flashing — 8 items
Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals is a recurring topic — know the galvanic series and which pairings require separation (NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing and Condensation and Air Leakage Control—2022, Page 38). Thermal expansion coefficients for different metals affect joint and lap design. Gauge and thickness requirements vary by flashing application. Protective coatings — fluoropolymer, anodizing, siliconized polyester — and their appropriate uses are tested. Coping, counterflashing, and perimeter edge metal details for low-slope systems are included.
Roofing Repairs — 4 items
These questions test your diagnostic and decision-making knowledge. Expect questions on leak detection sequencing (interior → attic → trace water travel), re-cover vs. replacement criteria, and SC Building Code 2021, Section 1512.2.1 requirements for roof recover including layer restrictions and prohibited substrates. Material-specific repair techniques for asphalt shingles, slate, membrane, and SPF systems appear, as do flashing repair sequences.
Roofing – Elastomeric — 6 items
Know EPDM attachment methods (loosely laid, fully adhered, mechanically fastened), thermoplastic membrane types (PVC, CPE, CSPE) and how their seams are welded, and liquid-applied systems including silicone, urethane, and neoprene with their application rates. Ballast system slope limitations, corner flashing techniques, substrate compatibility, and primer/slip sheet requirements are all fair game.
Roofing – Built-up Bituminous — 6 items
Bitumen types I–IV asphalt properties, EVT ranges, flash points, and application temperatures must be memorized. Ply sheet configurations — two-, three-, and four-ply shingle-fashion layouts — and back-nailing requirements on slopes are tested. Know aggregate flood coat application rates, restrictions on aggregate surfacing in high-wind areas, and rigid board insulation compatibility with hot bitumen.

Question 1 — Roofing – Steep
Eave length: 160 ft total; ice-and-water shield extends 3 ft up slope; valleys total 80 ft. Each roll covers 200 sq ft. How many rolls are needed?

Always round up on material takeoffs — you need 4 rolls. Candidates who forget the valleys, or who round down, choose B or C and lose the point.
Question 2 — Roofing – Substrate
For ventilated airspaces in a steep-slope roof assembly, what thermal resistance (R-value) is assigned to the ventilated airspace and its air film when calculating the assembly's temperature gradient?

Question 3 — Roofing – Metal Flashing
A multi-section wall contains 4 roof-to-wall transitions requiring kickout flashing. One extra is ordered for damage contingency. How many kickout flashings are ordered?

Straightforward addition: 4 required + 1 contingency = 5 kickout flashings. These quantity questions reward careful reading — the contingency unit is stated explicitly and must be included.
How to Read Your Score
The passing threshold is 70%, meaning 46 correct out of 65 on the real exam.
Treat your first practice attempt as a diagnostic, not a verdict. A score in the 50s tells you which topic areas need the most work — not that you will fail the real exam. A score in the low 70s on a first attempt is encouraging, but it should not signal that you are done preparing. The full practice exam draws from 441+ questions, so your second and third attempts will surface material you have not seen yet.
Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each attempt. If you score well on Safety but poorly on Steep-slope (the largest section at 22 items), that gap has the biggest impact on your total score. Prioritize accordingly. Scoring consistently above 80% across multiple full-length attempts — not just once — is a reasonable target before scheduling the real exam.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Steep-slope material takeoffs trip up candidates who set up the area calculation correctly but forget one component — a valley strip, a starter course overhang, or a ridge cap linear footage. Read every quantity question twice before calculating.
Code table selection is a common error in the Substrate section. SC Building Code 2021 has separate tables for plywood and OSB by rafter spacing and load type — selecting the wrong table produces a plausible but wrong answer.
Bitumen type properties in the Built-up Bituminous section catch candidates who memorize that there are four asphalt types but not which EVT range or application temperature belongs to which type.
Dissimilar metals and galvanic corrosion in the Metal Flashing section require knowing which metal pairings require physical separation — a concept question that looks easy until the answer choices involve two similar-sounding metals.
Fall protection trigger heights in the Safety section are frequently confused. Low-slope and steep-slope thresholds are different; mixing them up costs straightforward points on an already small section.
Time management across 65 questions in 180 minutes allows roughly 2.75 minutes per question. Candidates who spend too long on unfamiliar Built-up Bituminous or Elastomeric questions can run short of time on the Steep-slope section where they would have scored well.
