What This Practice Exam Covers
The Virginia Journeyman Plumber licensing exam consists of 80 questions answered within 210 minutes, with a passing score of 75% (60 correct answers). The exam spans 13 topic areas drawn from the International Plumbing Code 2021, Virginia contractor regulations, and applied trade mathematics.

What You'll Be Tested On
Drainage, Waste, and Vents — 24 items
This is the heaviest topic on the exam and deserves the most study time. Questions demand hands-on calculation: drainage fixture unit (DFU) values from IPC Table 709.1, stack and building drain sizing from IPC Tables 710.1(1) and 710.1(2), and slope requirements for horizontal piping from IPC Table 704.1. Cleanout placement rules under IPC Sections 708.1.1 through 708.1.12 are tested frequently — know the spacing limits, access requirements, and the exceptions. Vent system questions cover circuit vents (IPC Section 906.2), wet vents (IPC Section 909.1 and Table 909.1), combination waste-and-vent (IPC Section 915.1), air admittance valves (IPC Section 918.3.2 and 918.4), and individual and common vents. Vent sizing and developed-length calculations using IPC Table 912.3 and Table 913.4 also appear.
Water Supply Systems — 10 items
Expect questions on pipe materials and approved joining methods (IPC Table 605.4 area, IPC Section 606.2), pressure-reducing valves (IPC Section 604.8 and 604.8.1), maximum and minimum pressure requirements (IPC Table 604.3 and Table 604.5), water hammer arrestors (IPC Section 604.9), and supply system sizing using Appendix E procedures (IPC Appendix E, Section E103.3). Know the distinction between water service pipe and water distribution pipe, and the standards that govern each.
Backflow Prevention — 10 items
Questions focus on selecting the correct device for a given hazard level and installation condition. Know the difference between backsiphonage and backpressure, and between high-hazard contamination and low-hazard pollution. Device selection is tested via IPC Table 608.16.1. Reduced pressure principle assembly installation rules (IPC Section 608.14.2 and 608.14.4), vacuum breaker height requirements and prohibited locations (IPC Section 608.17.1.1 and 608.17.4 Exception 1), air gap dimensions (IPC Section 608.14.5), and freezing protection for backflow preventers (IPC Section 608.15.2) all appear as distinct question types.
Storm Drainage Systems — 10 items
Storm drain sizing requires using the GPM formula from IPC Section 1106.2.1 (Equation 11-1) and sizing tables at IPC Pages 11-3 and 11-9. You must be able to read a rainfall rate from IPC Appendix B geographic maps and apply it to conductor and drain sizing (IPC Tables 1106.2 and 1106.3). Secondary roof drain requirements under IPC Section 1108.3, subsoil drain rules (IPC Section 1110.1 and 1110.4), and approved pipe materials from IPC Tables 1102.4 and 1102.5 round out this topic.
Plumbing Fixtures — 7 items
Questions cover minimum fixture counts by occupancy from IPC Chapter 4, fixture spacing and clearance requirements (IPC Section 405.3.1), accessible fixture requirements per ICC A117.1, shower valve temperature limits (IPC Section 607.2 and 607.3), flushing device requirements for water closets (IPC Section 419.5 and 421.4), and water heater installation rules (IPC Sections 501.2, 502.3, 504.1, and 504.6).
General Regulations — 5 items
Permit requirements, required inspection stages, testing of drainage and water supply systems (IPC Sections 312.2, 312.3, 312.5, 312.9, and 312.10.1), pipe support intervals from IPC Table 308.5, and protection of piping from freezing and physical damage (IPC Section 305.1 and 305.6) are the main targets here.

Standards of Practice, Standards of Conduct, Renewal and Reinstatement, Definitions, Qualification for Licensure, and Revocation of Licensure — 10 items combined
These regulatory topics draw from Virginia's Individual License and Certification Regulations (18 VAC 50-30 series) and the Code of Virginia Title 54.1. Know the three-year license cycle, the three-hour continuing education requirement for renewal (building code changes), the 24-month reinstatement window, and what triggers a new application. Its purpose is to divert untreated graywater to the sanitary sewer during servicing and inspection. Note the listing standard: NSF 50 — not NSF 61, NSF 372, or NSF 14. Wrong listing standard selections are one of the most common errors on graywater questions.
Sample 3 — Backflow Prevention: Freezing Protection
You are installing a backflow preventer in a mechanical room that reaches below-freezing temperatures. If heat and insulation are not feasible, what must be provided?

Per IPC Section 608.15.2, backflow preventers must not be located in areas subject to freezing unless they can be removed via unions or are protected by heat, insulation, or both. This question is a good example of the "if X is not possible, then Y" format common throughout the backflow prevention topic.
How to Read Your Score
The passing threshold on the real exam is 75% — 60 out of 80 questions correct.
Treat your first practice attempt as a diagnostic, not a verdict. A first score of 65–70% is normal and tells you where the gaps are, not whether you will pass. What matters most is what you do with a topic-by-topic breakdown. If you are scoring well on Drainage, Waste, and Vents (24 items) but struggling with Backflow Prevention or Storm Drainage (10 items each), those are the areas that will move your score the fastest.
Scoring at exactly 75% on practice is not a signal to stop studying. Practice questions occasionally lean toward straightforward recall, while the real exam emphasizes applied scenarios and code look-up reasoning. Candidates who pass comfortably typically score 80% or higher on practice with consistent results across multiple attempts. If your score fluctuates widely between attempts, that points to shaky recall rather than solid understanding — keep reviewing the heavy topics.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Multi-step DFU calculations catch candidates who know individual fixture values but miscalculate totals when combining fixture types or misread the correct column in IPC Tables 710.1(1) and 710.1(2).
Wrong table for the scenario is a recurring trap in Storm Drainage. Candidates mix up vertical conductor sizing tables with horizontal drain tables, or apply the wrong rainfall rate by misreading the Appendix B map.
Backflow device selection errors happen when candidates know the device types but confuse high-hazard and low-hazard criteria, or apply the wrong listing standard. IPC Table 608.16.1 must be read by cross-connection type, not just device familiarity.
Cleanout placement details trip candidates who memorize general spacing rules but miss the specific exceptions in IPC Sections 708.1.1 through 708.1.12 — particularly which direction cleanouts must face and when end-of-line cleanouts are permitted.
Virginia regulatory questions are often missed by candidates who focus entirely on the IPC and neglect 18 VAC 50-30 requirements for renewal, reinstatement timelines, and prohibited acts.
Time management is a real factor. At 210 minutes for 80 questions, that is about 2.6 minutes per question — storm drain calculations and water supply sizing problems can easily eat 4–5 minutes if you are not familiar with the procedure.
