What This Practice Exam Covers

The Virginia Residential Plumber licensing exam is 50 questions answered in 120 minutes, with a passing score of 70% (35 correct). It spans 12 topic areas drawn from the International Plumbing Code 2021 and Virginia's contractor licensing regulations.

What You'll Be Tested On

Drainage Waste and Vents — 12 items

The single heaviest topic on the exam. Questions here require you to apply drainage fixture unit (DFU) values from IPC 2021 Table 710.1(1) and Table 710.1(2), calculate minimum pipe slopes (the standard ⅛ and ¼ inch per foot rules), and specify cleanout locations and clearances under IPC 2021 Section 708.1.1 through 708.1.12. Expect pipe joint method questions — which joints are approved for ABS, PVC, cast iron, and copper by material — and vent configuration questions covering individual, common, wet, circuit, stack vents, and air admittance valves. Vent sizing and developed length calculations from IPC Table 909.1 and Section 909.1 appear regularly. This topic will make or break your score.

Water Supply Systems — 8 items

You need to know approved water service and distribution pipe materials from IPC 2021 Table 604.3 and Table 604.5, pressure rules (the 80 psi static threshold at Section 604.8, the 40 psi minimum at Section 604.9), and pressure-reducing valve requirements. Fixture unit demand calculations using Appendix E procedures come up here. Potable water protection and cross-connection control overlap with the Backflow Prevention topic, so study them together.

Backflow Prevention — 6 items

This is a precision topic — the exam tests specific device types, hazard classifications, and installation heights. Air gap minimums, reduced-pressure principle (RP) assembly applications, vacuum breaker installation heights (including the 6-foot rule for health care areas under IPC 2021 Section 608.3.1), and device selection from Table 608.1 are all fair game. Know which protection method applies to hose bibbs, boilers, irrigation systems, and beverage dispensers. A wrong device type costs a point even when everything else in your answer is right.

Storm Drainage Systems — 4 items

Questions require you to read rainfall rate data, apply Equation 11-1 from IPC 2021 Section 1106.2.1 to calculate roof drain flow rates, and size storm drain piping using Table 1106.2 and Table 1106.3. Secondary (emergency) roof drain sizing under Section 1108.3 and approved materials for conductors and subsoil drains from Section 1101.7 and Section 1104.2 are tested. Know how to work through a complete sizing calculation — partial knowledge isn't enough here.

Plumbing Fixtures — 4 items

Minimum fixture counts by occupancy, fixture clearance and spacing requirements, and accessible fixture rules under ICC A117.1 are the core content. Shower valve temperature limits and flushing device requirements for water closets and urinals also appear. IPC Section 405.3.1 and Section 421.4 address specific fixture dimensions candidates routinely miss.

General Regulations — 4 items

Permit requirements, inspection stages (underground, rough-in, and final), and testing procedures for drainage, vent, water supply, and backflow prevention assemblies are tested. Pipe protection against freezing, physical damage, and corrosive contact under IPC Chapter 3 references (including Table 308.5 and Section 305.6) rounds out this topic.

Interceptors and Traps — 4 items

Trap seal depth, prohibited trap types, grease interceptor sizing, and oil separator requirements. IPC Section 1002.1, Section 1002.3, and Section 1003.4.2.2 define the core rules. Knowing which trap types are prohibited outright and the minimum trap seal depth (2 inches) are the basic points — but sizing grease interceptors requires calculation.

Standards of Practice — 3 items

Virginia-specific contractor law: Class A, B, and C license thresholds, prohibited acts for unlicensed contracting, written contract requirements for residential work, and grounds for license suspension and revocation. Primary sources are the Virginia Code § 54.1-1100 series and the Board for Contractors regulations.

Standards of Conduct — 2 items

Disciplinary grounds including abandonment, misrepresentation, and failure to complete contracted work. Reporting obligations for convictions and the prohibition on license transfer or assignment under Virginia Board for Contractors regulations (18 VAC 50-30 series).

Renewal and Reinstatement — 1 item

License expiration periods, continuing education requirements for renewal, reinstatement fees, and the timeline after expiration. Covered under 18 VAC 50-30-160 and related sections.

Definitions — 1 item

IPC 2021 Section 202 definitions for drainage terms (building drain, building sewer, stack, branch), water supply terms (potable water, backflow, cross-connection), and venting terms (vent stack, stack vent, air admittance valve). Virginia-specific definitions for residential plumber tradesman and plumbing work scope also appear.

Qualification for Licensure — 1 item

Education and experience requirements for residential plumber tradesman, journeyman, and master plumber licensure in Virginia, including documentation and application procedures per 18 VAC 50-30 regulations.


Worked Sample Questions

Question 1 — Drainage Waste and Vents

You are renovating a commercial kitchen. Your crew wants to connect a new floor sink to an existing threaded cleanout opening on the building drain to save time and materials. Under what condition, if any, is this permitted?

  • A. It is always permitted as long as the cleanout opening matches the pipe size of the new fixture drain
  • B. It is permitted only if another cleanout of equal size is installed with the required access and clearance
  • C. It is never permitted under any circumstances
  • D. It is permitted only if the cleanout is located above grade

Correct Answer: B

The code does not make cleanout-to-fixture connection an absolute prohibition — but it does impose a firm condition. Per Sanitary Drainage, Section 708.1.12, using a threaded cleanout opening to add a fixture or extend piping is prohibited except where another cleanout of equal size is installed with the required access and clearance. Options A and D add conditions the code does not recognize; Option C overstates the restriction.


Question 2 — Water Supply Systems

You are called to a residence where static water pressure from the municipal main measures 95 psi. What device must be installed to bring the system into compliance?

  • A. A thermal expansion tank conforming to ASSE 1010
  • B. A double-check backflow prevention assembly conforming to ASSE 1015
  • C. A water pressure booster pump conforming to NSF 61
  • D. A pressure-reducing valve conforming to ASSE 1003 or CSA B356

Correct Answer: D

At 95 psi, the system exceeds the 80 psi static threshold. Per IPC 2021, Section 604.8, where static pressure within a building exceeds 80 psi, an approved pressure-reducing valve conforming to ASSE 1003 or CSA B356 must be installed to reduce pressure to not more than 80 psi. A booster pump (Option C) would raise pressure, not reduce it. The other devices serve unrelated purposes.


Question 3 — Backflow Prevention

You are installing vacuum breakers in a hospital. What is the minimum installation height above the floor for a vacuum breaker serving a hose connection in a health care area?

  • A. 3 feet
  • B. 6 feet
  • C. 4 feet
  • D. 5 feet

Correct Answer: B

Health care areas carry a higher contamination risk, and the code reflects that. Per IPC 2021, Section 608.3.1, vacuum breakers for hose connections in health care or laboratory areas must be installed not less than 6 feet above the floor. The standard residential hose bibb vacuum breaker height and the bedpan washer requirement are both lower — knowing the health-care-specific rule is what separates a correct answer from a plausible wrong one.


How to Read Your Score

The passing threshold is 70% — 35 correct out of 50 questions. On the full practice exam, treat your first attempt as a diagnostic, not a verdict. A score of 55–65% on a first attempt is common and tells you the topic split is working against you, not that you can't pass.

After each attempt, look at your performance by topic. The 12 topics are not equally weighted — Drainage Waste and Vents alone accounts for 24% of the real exam. If you're losing points there, that's where to spend study time first. Backflow Prevention and Water Supply Systems together add another 28%.

Scoring near 70% on practice — say, 68–72% — usually means more work is needed, not that you're ready. The real exam will draw from a broader pool and won't repeat the exact scenarios you've seen in practice. A comfortable readiness target is consistent scores of 80% or better across multiple full-exam attempts.

Retake the full practice exam with different attempts to confirm your weak spots are actually closing, not just lucky runs.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Wrong code section for the right concept. Backflow Prevention questions are particularly vulnerable to this — a candidate who knows roughly how vacuum breakers work but doesn't know the specific height requirements or device standards by application (hose bibb vs. health care vs. irrigation) will pick a plausible wrong answer.

Table lookup errors in Drainage Waste and Vents. DFU calculations require you to use the right table — IPC 2021 Table 710.1(1) versus Table 710.1(2) depending on system configuration. Pulling numbers from the wrong table produces a confident wrong answer.

Storm Drainage calculation shortcuts. Equation 11-1 requires rainfall rate, roof area, and drainage efficiency. Candidates who skip a step or round prematurely get a number that doesn't match any answer choice — then guess and lose the point.

Virginia law questions answered with IPC logic. Standards of Practice and Standards of Conduct questions are governed by Virginia Code and 18 VAC 50-30 regulations, not the IPC. Applying code-style reasoning to a licensing law question is a common error.

Time mismanagement. With 50 questions in 120 minutes, you have an average of 2.4 minutes per question. Multi-step calculations in Storm Drainage and Water Supply sizing take longer — candidates who don't budget for that run out of time on the final questions.
