Administration General Regulations
Key Concepts
Scope and applicability - The code applies to erection, installation, alteration, repair, relocation, replacement, addition, use or maintenance of plumbing systems. Exception: detached one- and two-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses) not more than three stories high with separate means of egress, and their accessory structures, comply with the International Residential Code (101.2). - Additions, alterations, renovations or repairs related to building or structural issues are regulated by the International Existing Building Code (102.2.1). - Devices or safeguards required by the code shall be maintained in compliance with the edition of the code under which they were installed; the owner or owner's authorized agent is responsible, and the code official may require reinspection (102.3).
Approval and testing authority - Where evidence of compliance is insufficient, the code official may require tests at no expense to the jurisdiction (105.3); such tests shall be performed by an approved agency (105.3.2).
Plumbing Fixtures
Key Concepts
Fixture installation clearances (Section 405.3.1) - A water closet, urinal, lavatory or bidet shall not be set closer than 15 inches from its center to any side wall, partition, vanity or other obstruction. - Where partitions do not separate adjacent fixtures, fixtures shall not be set closer than 30 inches center to center. - Not less than 21 inches clearance in front of a water closet, urinal, lavatory or bidet to any wall, fixture or door. - Water closet compartments: not less than 30 inches wide and 60 inches deep for floor-mounted water closets; not less than 30 inches wide and 56 inches deep for wall-hung water closets.
Urinal partitions (Section 405.3.5) — Horizontal dimension between walls/partitions at each urinal not less than 30 inches; partitions begin at a height not greater than 12 inches from, and extend not less than 60 inches above, the finished floor. Partitions extend from the wall surface at each side not less than 18 inches, or not less than 6 inches beyond the outermost front lip…
Water Supply and Distribution
International Plumbing Code 2018 — Chapter 6, Water Supply and Distribution
Key Concepts
Water service sizing and separation - The water service pipe shall be sized to supply water to the structure in the quantities and at the pressures required, and shall be not less than 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) in diameter (IPC 603.1). - Where a building sewer in a common trench is not of a material listed in Table 702.2, the water service pipe and building sewer shall be horizontally separated by not less than 5 feet (1524 mm) of undisturbed or compacted earth. The separation does not apply at crossings where the water service is sleeved to a point not less than 5 feet horizontally from the sewer centerline on both sides, or where the bottom of the water service (within 5 feet of the sewer) is not less than 12 inches (305 mm) above the highest point of the top of the building sewer (IPC 603.2).
Sanitary Drainage
Key Concepts
Scope and general (Section 701). Chapter 7 governs materials, design, construction and installation of sanitary drainage systems (701.1). Sanitary drainage piping shall connect to a public sewer, or to a private sewage disposal system where no public sewer is available (701.2). The sanitary drainage system shall be tested in accordance with Section 312 (701.6); engineered systems conform to Sections 316 and 713 (701.7).
Materials. Above-ground soil, waste and vent pipe must conform to a standard in Table 702.1; underground building drainage/vent pipe to Table 702.2; building sewer pipe to Table 702.3; fittings to Table 702.4. Where waste water temperature exceeds 140°F, the piping material shall be rated for the highest waste water temperature (702.5). A chemical waste system shall be completely separated from the sanitary drainage system (702.6).
Plumbing Vent Requirements
2018 International Plumbing Code — Chapter 9 Vents
Key Concepts
Scope and trap seal protection - The vent system must permit admission or emission of air so that any fixture trap seal is not subjected to a pressure differential of more than 1 inch of water column (249 Pa) — IPC 2018 Section 901.2. - The plumbing vent system shall not be used for purposes other than venting the plumbing system — Section 901.4.
Vent terminals (Section 903) - Frost closure: Where the 97.5-percent value for outdoor design temperature is 0°F (−18°C) or less, vent extensions through a roof or wall shall be not less than 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter, and any increase in vent size shall be made not less than 1 foot (305 mm) inside the thermal envelope — Section 903.2. - An open vent terminal shall not be located directly beneath any door, openable window or air intake, and not within 10 feet (3048 mm) horizontally of such an opening unless it is 3 feet (914 mm) or more…
Traps, Interceptors, and Separators
Key Concepts
Fixture trapping and dimensions (Section 1002.1, p. 124) - Each plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap, except as otherwise permitted. - Vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches (610 mm) — a maximum. - Horizontal distance shall not exceed 30 inches (762 mm), measured centerline of fixture outlet to centerline of trap inlet. - A fixture shall not be double trapped. - Exception 2: a combination fixture may use one trap if one compartment is not more than 6 inches (152 mm) deeper than the other and the waste outlets are not more than 30 inches (762 mm) apart. - Exception 3: a grease interceptor listed by the manufacturer to serve as a fixture trap may serve a single fixture or a combination sink of not more than three compartments, where the vertical distance from fixture outlet to interceptor inlet does not exceed 30 inches (762 mm) and the developed length of waste pipe from the most upstream fixture outlet…
Storm Drainage
ICC G28 Journeyman Plumber with Gas (2018 IPC/IFGC) — Chapter 11
Key Concepts
Disposal and prohibited connections - Rainwater from roofs and storm water from paved areas, yards, courts and courtyards shall drain to an approved place of disposal. For one- and two-family dwellings, and where approved, storm water is permitted to discharge onto flat areas such as streets or lawns, provided the storm water flows away from the building (1101.2). - Storm water shall not be drained into sewers intended for sewage only (1101.3). - Conductor pipes shall not be used as soil, waste or vent pipes, and soil, waste or vent pipes shall not be used as conductors (1104.1). Floor drains shall not be connected to a storm drain (1104.2).
General system rules - Conductors and the building storm drain shall be tested in accordance with Section 312 (1101.4). - The size of a drainage pipe shall not be reduced in the direction of flow (1101.5). - Changes in direction shall use approved drainage-type fittings in accordance with Table 706.3 (1101.6). -…
