2. Virginia Board for Contractors Individual License and Certification Regulations

This covers Standards of Practice, Standards of Conduct, Renewal, Reinstatement, Qualification for Licensure, and Revocation — the code-of-conduct side of the exam. It's free online, but print the relevant sections and bring them tabbed.

References may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed. They must not contain any handwriting, and no loose papers or study guides are permitted in the exam room.

Study Tips for the PSI Master Plumber Exam in Virginia

Tab your books before anything else. On an open-book exam, speed is the skill. Highlight key tables, mark chapter dividers, and learn the index until you can open to any topic in under ten seconds. That's what separates people who finish with time to check their work from people who run out of clock.

Work through questions in two passes. Answer the ones you know, skip the ones you don't. Flag the skipped ones and come back. How much does the Virginia Master Plumber exam cost?
The exam fee is $125. It's non-refundable and non-transferable, and it's valid for one year from the date of payment.

How many questions are on the exam and how long do I have?
The scored portion has 80 questions. You have 210 minutes (3.5 hours) to complete it. PSI may also include a small number of experimental questions — these won't be scored, but they do count against your time.

What is the passing score?
You need to answer 60 out of 80 scored questions correctly, which is 75%.

How do I register for the exam?

Can I retake the exam if I fail?

Is the Virginia Master Plumber exam open book?
Yes. You may bring the International Plumbing Code 2021 and the Virginia Board for Contractors Individual License and Certification Regulations. Highlighting and tabs are fine; writing is not. No study guides or loose papers allowed.

What ID do I need?
One valid, government-issued photo ID that also has your signature — driver's license, passport, military ID, state ID card, passport card, or Alien Registration Card. The name must match your registration exactly.

Can I bring a calculator?
No. Handheld calculators and all electronic devices are prohibited. Do your math with pencil and paper — and practice that way so it's not a surprise on test day.

How will I get my results?
Your score displays on screen immediately when you finish. PSI will also email you a score report. If you don't pass, the report includes a diagnostic breakdown by topic so you know exactly where to focus before you retest. You can also print it from your PSI online account.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
You can cancel or reschedule without losing your fee if PSI receives notice at least two days before your scheduled date. Use the PSI website or call them directly — voicemail and email are not accepted as valid cancellations.
