What You'll Be Tested On

This is the heaviest topic on the exam — 30% of your score. Expect calculation-based questions requiring you to assign drainage fixture unit (DFU) values from IPC 2021 Table 709.1, then size horizontal branch drains, building drains, and building sewers using Tables 710.1(1) and 710.1(2). Slope requirements for horizontal drainage piping are tested directly. Vent sizing questions require developed length calculations and use of Table 909.1. You must know the operational differences between individual, common, wet, circuit, and combination waste-and-vent systems, and when air admittance valves are and are not permitted under IPC 2021 Section 914.4. Cleanout placement, spacing, and the specific conditions that trigger additional cleanouts round out this section. This topic alone justifies heavy table-lookup practice.

Water Supply Systems — 10 items

Questions cover backflow device selection, pipe material standards, pressure regulation, and system sizing. You need to know the 80 psi static threshold and the requirement for a pressure-reducing valve conforming to ASSE 1003 or CSA B356 per IPC 2021, Section 604.8. Sizing questions use the fixture unit method and the segmented loss method from IPC 2021 Appendix E. Hot water supply temperature limits — including the 120°F maximum at accessible fixtures per IPC 2021, Section 607.2 — appear frequently, as do recirculation system requirements under IPC 2021, Section 607.3.

Backflow Prevention — 10 items

This topic demands precision on device selection by hazard level and backflow type. You must distinguish high-hazard from low-hazard cross-connections and match each to the correct assembly: air gaps, reduced pressure principle (RP) assemblies (ASSE 1013), pressure vacuum breakers (ASSE 1020), atmospheric vacuum breakers (ASSE 1001), and dual-check devices. Specific applications tested include boilers, irrigation systems, hose connections, and carbonated beverage dispensers — each with its own device requirement. Storm Drainage Systems — 10 items

Rainfall intensity, roof drain sizing, and secondary drain requirements dominate this section. You must be able to apply the 100-year hourly rainfall rate using IPC 2021 Appendix B geographic data and size storm drains using IPC 2021 Tables 1106.2 and 1106.3. Plumbing Fixtures — 7 items

Minimum fixture counts by occupancy, clearance and spacing requirements, and ICC A117.1 accessible fixture dimensions are all tested. Know the maximum flush volumes for water closets and urinals, faucet flow rate limits, and which fixture materials are prohibited. Questions often present a building type and occupant load and ask you to calculate the minimum number of required fixtures — a straightforward calculation that becomes a point-loser when candidates use the wrong occupancy category.

General Regulations — 5 items

Permit requirements, inspection sequences (underground, rough-in, final), code official authority, stop work orders, and pipe protection requirements. Trenching, bedding, and backfill requirements for buried piping appear here. Know the testing protocol under IPC 2021, Section 312.5 — including the 15-minute hold time for water pressure tests — because the exam tests the exact number.

Interceptors and Traps — 4 items

Trap seal depth, prohibited trap types, grease interceptor sizing, and indirect waste air gap/air break requirements. IPC Section 1002.1 definitions and trap installation rules are directly tested. Grease interceptor applicability and sizing criteria appear as scenario-based questions.

Standards of Practice, Standards of Conduct, Renewal and Reinstatement — 7 items combined

Virginia-specific regulatory knowledge: license expiration (three-year cycle), the 30-day grace period before a lapsed license triggers reinstatement fees, and the 24-month maximum reinstatement window after which a new application is required. Correct Answer: FALSE

IPC 2021, Section 312.5 requires the water supply system to be tested at not less than working pressure, but the required hold time is 15 minutes — not 30. The exam uses this exact number to test whether candidates have read the section carefully. Thirty minutes is a plausible-sounding wrong answer that costs points when candidates rely on memory rather than code verification.

How to Read Your Score

The passing threshold is 75% — 60 of 80 questions correct on the real exam. On a practice attempt, treat your first score as a diagnostic reading, not a final verdict.

A score below 65% tells you that foundational knowledge gaps exist across multiple topics and that targeted study — particularly in Drainage Waste and Vents, which carries 24 items — will move the needle most. A score between 65% and 74% means you are in range but not yet consistent enough to pass comfortably; one bad topic section can drop you below the line. A score above 80% on repeated full practice attempts is a stronger readiness signal than a single high result.

Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each practice attempt to direct your study. If you score well on Virginia regulatory topics (3–7 items) but miss Backflow Prevention or Storm Drainage questions repeatedly, that imbalance is exactly what to correct before your real exam date. Scoring near 75% on practice consistently means more work is needed — passing on practice by a narrow margin rarely translates to a comfortable margin on test day.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Drainage Waste and Vents is where the most points are won or lost. Candidates misread DFU tables, apply horizontal branch pipe sizing where building drain sizing applies, or forget that slope affects capacity. With 24 items at stake, a partial understanding here can be the difference between passing and failing.

Storm Drainage trips up candidates who confuse roof drain sizing tables with storm sewer sizing tables, or who forget to account for secondary drainage requirements under IPC 2021 Section 1108.3.

Backflow Prevention questions are lost when candidates select the right device category but the wrong assembly standard — confusing ASSE 1013 (reduced pressure) with ASSE 1020 (pressure vacuum breaker), for example. Hazard level misclassification is another common error.

Time management is a real issue. At 210 minutes for 80 questions, you have roughly 2.5 minutes per question. Multi-step calculations in Drainage and Storm Drainage can easily consume 4–5 minutes each if you are looking up tables for the first time. Practice under timed conditions so the table-lookup process becomes fast.

Virginia regulatory questions (Standards of Practice, Renewal, Revocation) are low-count but high-precision — exact numbers like the 30-day grace period and 24-month reinstatement window are tested, and close-but-wrong answers are built into the distractors.
