- Second pass: work through your bookmarks.
- Pace: 3 hours for 75 questions, which is about 2 minutes 24 seconds per question.
- Last step: answer anything still blank. A blank can't earn a point.
Study Tips
Take this practice exam several times. The goal is to consistently clear your exam's passing score — often around 70–75% — so passing feels routine before you walk into the real test.
Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.
Know your way around each book's index and table of contents. Open-book exams reward speed: you need to find specific items quickly.
A little anxiety before an exam is completely normal — acknowledge it instead of fighting it. If you feel yourself spiraling on a question, pause and take a few slow breaths to reset. If your test center allows a short break, use it; just remember the clock usually keeps running.
West Virginia Electrical Contractor Sample Questions
From our practice question bank, with answers and references:
Sample 1 — Equipment for General Use
Question: As the contractor, you are installing a dead-front switchboard that is not of the totally enclosed type in an electrical room with a wood-joist (nonfireproof) ceiling, and no fireproof shield is being installed between the board and the ceiling. What minimum clearance must be maintained between the top of the switchboard and that ceiling?
- A. 1.2 m (4 ft)
- B. 600 mm (2 ft)
- C. 900 mm (3 ft)
- D. 450 mm (18 in.)
Correct Answer: C
American Electricians' Handbook, Sec. 82 (Location of switchboards) states that a clearance of at least 900 mm (3 ft) must be left between the top of a board and a nonfireproof ceiling unless an adequate fireproof shield is provided between the board and the ceiling or the switchboard is totally enclosed. Because this board is neither shielded nor totally enclosed, the full 3-ft clearance applies.

Sample 2 — Motors & Controls
Question: A control circuit transformer installed in a motor starter enclosure supplies a Class 2 remote-control circuit. The Class 2 circuit must comply with the requirements of which of the following?
- A. Section 450.3 transformer protection
- B. Column A of Table 430.72(B)(2)
- C. Part II of Article 725
- D. Sections 724.30 through 724.52
Correct Answer: C
NEC 430.72(C)(1) requires that where the control circuit transformer supplies a Class 1 power-limited circuit, the circuit comply with 724.30 through 724.52, and where it supplies a Class 2 or Class 3 remote-control circuit, the circuit comply with the requirements of Part II of Article 725.

Sample 3 — Special Equipment
Question: The authority having jurisdiction has permitted a building's paging and background music system to be combined with the fire alarm system. The wiring of the combined system must comply with which article?
- A. Article 722
- B. Article 800
- C. Article 760
- D. Article 645
Correct Answer: C
NEC 2023, 640.3(K) states that where the authority having jurisdiction permits audio systems for paging or music, or both, to be combined with fire alarm systems, the wiring shall comply with Article 760 (power-limited and non-power-limited fire alarm circuits).
Reference: NEC 2023 Section 640.3(K)
Sample 4 — Special Conditions
Question: You are installing a Class 1 remote-control circuit fed from the secondary of a single-phase control transformer, and you intend to rely on the overcurrent device on the primary side to protect the Class 1 secondary conductors. This is permitted only where the transformer secondary is:
- A. Rated 30 volts or less
- B. 2-wire, single-voltage
- C. Fed through current-limiting impedance
- D. 3-wire with a grounded neutral
Correct Answer: B
NEC 2023, 724.45(D) permits Class 1 circuit conductors supplied by the secondary of a single-phase transformer having only a 2-wire (single-voltage) secondary to be protected by primary-side overcurrent protection (not exceeding the secondary conductor ampacity multiplied by the secondary-to-primary voltage ratio). Transformer secondaries other than 2-wire are not considered protected by the primary device.
