Books You'll Need for the Wyoming Low-voltage General Technician (ICC 218, 2023 NEC) Exam
Where to get them:
Test Day Tips
Start with a quick pass through the whole exam. Answer every question you're sure about and bookmark the rest. Every exam lets you return to bookmarked questions, so nothing is lost by moving on. One catch: some exams lock the questions you've already seen once you take a break, so clear your bookmarks before any break.
Then come back to your bookmarks and work through them one at a time. Keep an eye on the clock: you have 3 hours for 50 questions, which is about 3 minutes 36 seconds per question. Before you finish, make sure every question has an answer. A blank can't earn a point.
Study Tips
Take this practice exam several times. The goal is to consistently clear your exam's passing score — often around 70–75% — so passing feels routine before you walk into the real test.
Only select answers that directly respond to the question asked—not ones that merely sound correct or seem true. After choosing, verify your answer against the question to confirm you didn't misread it and that your selection genuinely addresses what was asked.
Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.
Give yourself at least three to six weeks. Use your exam's candidate bulletin as your roadmap for what's tested, and spend your time on finding-it-fast skills over rote memorization. In practice, aim for three clean passes at 80% or higher — setting your practice bar above the real cut score gives you a comfortable margin on test day.
Know your way around each book's index and table of contents. Open-book exams reward speed: you need to find specific items quickly.

Sample 1 — Low-voltage Control Circuits
Question: Each motor is normally required to have an individual motor controller. For motors rated 1000 volts or less, under which condition is a single motor controller permitted to serve an entire group of motors?
- A. All motors in the group are supplied by one feeder
- B. The motors are in one room within sight of the controller
- C. All motors in the group are rated 2 hp or less
- D. Each motor in the group has individual overload protection
Correct Answer: B
NEC 2023, Section 430.87 Exception No. 1 permits a single motor controller, rated at not less than the equivalent horsepower of all motors in the group, where the motors drive several parts of a single machine, where the group is protected by one overcurrent device per 430.53(A), or where the group of motors is located in a single room within sight from the motor controller location.

Sample 2 — Fiber Optical Cables and Raceways
Question: The design drawings call for Type OFNR optical fiber cable, which the supplier cannot deliver. Which listed cable type is a permitted substitution for OFNR?
- A. OFNP
- B. OFCP
- C. OFNG
- D. OFCR
Correct Answer: A
Per NEC 2023, Table 770.154(b), the only permitted substitution for Type OFNR is Type OFNP. Conductive types (OFCR, OFCP) and general-purpose types (OFNG) may not be substituted for a nonconductive riser cable.

Sample 3 — Low-voltage Communication and Sound Systems
Question: A premises-powered broadband network terminal is served by nonconductive optical fiber cable, and all circuits terminating at the terminal remain entirely inside the building. The coaxial cable shield has been separately grounded by a fixed connection to an equipment grounding conductor. For the connection to the network terminal grounding connection, which method is permitted?
- A. A listed device that retains the ground if the terminal is unplugged
- B. A bonding jumper to the intersystem bonding termination
- C. A grounding electrode conductor run to a driven ground rod
- D. A cord-and-plug connection
Correct Answer: D
NEC 2023, 840.101(C) provides that the network terminal is not required to be grounded unless required by its listing, and where the coaxial cable shield is separately grounded as described in 840.101(A)(1) or (A)(2), the use of a cord and plug for the connection to the network terminal grounding connection is permitted.

Sample 4 — General Knowledge
Question: You are routing low-voltage cable and a small junction box in an exposed area beneath a metal-corrugated sheet roof deck in a warehouse. Measured from the lowest surface of the roof decking to the top of the cable, raceway, or box, what minimum spacing must be maintained?
- A. 3 in.
- B. 1 1/4 in.
- C. 2 in.
- D. 1 1/2 in.
Correct Answer: D
NEC 2023, 300.4(E) requires a cable, raceway, or box installed under metal-corrugated sheet roof decking to be installed and supported so there is not less than 38 mm (1 1/2 in.) measured from the lowest surface of the roof decking to the top of the cable, raceway, or box; installation in concealed locations in such decking is prohibited. The 1 1/4 in. figure applies to bored holes and framing-member clearance in 300.4(A) and (D); the 2 in. figure is the concrete slab thickness in the exception to 300.4(E).
