Our study plan for this topic: Formwork safety requirements and failure prevention; Lateral pressure of concrete on forms (temperature, rate of placement, unit weight); Types of formwork systems (job-built, gang, flying table, slipform, jump form, ICF, stay-in-place); Form materials and hardware (plywood grades, lumber, steel, form ties, anchors, liners); Form design considerations and load calculations; Form removal timing and concrete strength requirements; Shoring and reshoring procedures for multistory construction; Formwork tolerances and dimensional accuracy (ACI 117).

3 questions

Sample 1 — General Concrete

Question: You are a remodeling carpenter preparing to pour a concrete sidewalk that will be exposed to freeze-thaw cycles but will not receive deicing chemicals. You need to determine the appropriate nominal maximum aggregate size. The forms are 4 inches deep, and the narrowest vertical concrete member is 12 inches wide. Based on standard guidelines for aggregate sizing, what is the maximum nominal aggregate size you should use for this slab?

  • A. 1-1/3 inches
  • B. 3/4 inch
  • C. 1-1/2 inches
  • D. 1 inch

Correct Answer: A

The nominal maximum size of aggregate should not exceed one-third the depth of a slab. For a 4-inch slab, one-third of 4 inches equals approximately 1-1/3 inches. It must also not exceed one-fifth the narrowest dimension of a vertical member (12 ÷ 5 = 2.4 inches), so the slab depth governs at 1-1/3 inches.

Sample 2 — Layout and Excavation

Question: You are a contractor specifying steel sheet piling for a cofferdam. The panels are available in several gauge thicknesses. Which of the following is a standard gauge thickness offered for steel sheet pile panels?

  • A. 7-gauge
  • B. 9-gauge
  • C. 14-gauge
  • D. 5-gauge

Correct Answer: A

The reference states that steel sheet pile panels come in 12-, 10-, 8-, and 7-gauge thicknesses. Of the options listed, only 7-gauge is one of the available standard thicknesses.

Sample 3 — Formwork

Question: The approximate unit weight of normalweight concrete used for formwork design calculations is ______ lb/ft³.

  • A. 100
  • B. 125
  • C. 150
  • D. 175

Correct Answer: C

Concrete is a heavy material, approximately 150 lb/ft³ (2400 kg/m³) for normalweight concrete (more than twice the weight of water). This value is critical for formwork design as it directly affects the loads that forms must support.
