Sample 1 — General Knowledge and Theory
Question: Under the prescriptive compliance approach of the IECC, how does a builder determine the required insulation levels for a residential project?
- A. By computing peak cooling loads for the structure
- B. By selecting from packages based on climate zone location
- C. By averaging heating degree days over 10 years
- D. By calculating annual energy costs for the building
Correct Answer: B
The prescriptive approach allows builders or designers to select from various combinations of energy-conservation measures (packages) based on climate zone location. Each package specifies insulation levels, glazing areas, glazing U-values, and sometimes equipment efficiency. Few calculations are required with this method.

Sample 2 — Batt / Roll Insulation
Question: A high-density R-30C batt designed for cathedral ceiling applications is typically what thickness?
- A. 6¼ to 6½ inches
- B. 9½ to 10 inches
- C. 10 to 10¼ inches
- D. 8¼ to 8½ inches
Correct Answer: D
High-density R-30 superbatts (designated with a 'C' suffix) are 8¼ to 8½ inches thick, as opposed to standard R-30 fiberglass batts of 9½ to 10 inches. This reduced thickness allows them to fit between nominal 2×10 framing while maintaining the required 1-inch ventilation airspace.

Sample 3 — OSHA Safety
Question: You are a remodeling contractor selecting personal protective equipment for your crew. Which organization's approval should you verify when choosing safety glasses, hardhats, and hearing protectors for construction use?
- A. EPA
- B. NFPA
- C. ANSI
- D. UL
Correct Answer: C
The protective equipment chosen for construction use should be approved for its given use by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI sets standards for personal protective equipment including safety glasses, hardhats, and hearing protectors used on job sites.
