5 topics

2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Introduction 3 items

Our study plan for this topic: Purpose and scope of the NEC (Article 90.1–90.2); Installations covered and not covered by the NEC; NEC code arrangement and chapter organization (Article 90.3); Authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) enforcement and special permission; Mandatory vs. permissive rules and explanatory material (Article 90.5); Equipment examination, listing, and approval (Article 90.7); Wiring planning for future expansion and circuit limitations (Article 90.8); Units of measurement and SI/inch-pound dual system (Article 90.9).

2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 1 5 items

Our study plan for this topic: Key NEC definitions and terminology (Article 100 Part I); Equipment approval, listing, and labeling requirements; Electrical connections, splices, and conductor temperature ratings; Working space and clearances around electrical equipment; Guarding of live parts and enclosure type selection; Equipment marking, arc-flash hazard warnings, and disconnecting means identification; Wiring integrity, wiring methods, and conductor materials and sizes; Article 100 - Definitions.

2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 2 11 items

Our study plan for this topic: Grounding and bonding requirements for electrical systems and equipment (Article 250); Grounding electrode system types, installation, and sizing; Equipment grounding conductor types, sizing, and identification; Bonding methods for services, piping systems, and structural metal; Branch circuit ratings, conductor sizing, and overcurrent protection (Article 210); Branch-circuit, feeder, and service load calculations (Article 220); Overcurrent protection devices, ratings, and locations (Article 240); Outside branch circuits and feeders — clearances, disconnecting means, and conductor requirements (Article 225).

2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 3 5 items

Our study plan for this topic: Underground installation requirements and minimum burial depths (Table 300.5); Conductor ampacity tables and temperature correction/adjustment factors (Article 310); Wiring methods for conduit types: EMT, RMC, IMC, PVC, FMC, LFMC, and LFNC; Type UF and Type USE cable uses permitted and installation requirements; Outlet, junction, and pull box sizing and installation (Article 314); Protection of conductors and raceways against physical damage (300.4); Conductor identification, marking, and insulation types (310.104, 310.120); Cabinets and enclosures: wire-bending space, conductor deflection, and spacing requirements (Article 312).

2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 6 16 items

Our study plan for this topic: Irrigation cable construction requirements and installation standards; Disconnecting means requirements for irrigation machines; Equivalent current ratings for intermittent-duty irrigation machines; Grounding and bonding requirements for irrigation equipment; Collector ring ratings and protection; Several motors on one branch circuit — protection and tap requirements; Center pivot irrigation machine equivalent current ratings; Main control panel marking requirements.

3 questions

Sample 1 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 6

Question: Which of the following must be included on the nameplate provided on the main control panel of an electrically driven irrigation machine?

  • A. The rated frequency
  • B. The feeder conductor ampacity
  • C. The available fault current
  • D. The short-circuit current rating

Correct Answer: A

NEC 2017, 675.6 requires the main control panel nameplate to give the manufacturer's name, the rated voltage, the phase, and the frequency, along with the machine current rating and the rating of the main disconnecting means and size of overcurrent protection required. Available fault current, short-circuit current rating, and feeder ampacity are markings required elsewhere in the Code, not by 675.6.

Sample 2 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 2

Question: A 400 A service uses 600 kcmil copper service conductors. What is the minimum size of a copper grounding electrode conductor that runs only to a concrete-encased electrode?

  • A. 2 AWG
  • B. 4 AWG
  • C. 3/0 AWG
  • D. 1/0 AWG

Correct Answer: B

Table 250.66 would require a 1/0 AWG copper grounding electrode conductor for 600 kcmil copper service conductors, but 250.66(B) says a grounding electrode conductor (or bonding jumper) that runs only to a concrete-encased electrode is not required to be larger than 4 AWG copper. So the minimum size required here is 4 AWG copper.

Sample 3 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 1

Question: Per NEC Article 110.12, what requirement applies to the mechanical execution of electrical work?

  • A. All work must be performed by a licensed journeyman electrician
  • B. Unused openings in boxes, raceways, and enclosures shall be effectively closed
  • C. All conductors must be color-coded at every junction point
  • D. Work must be inspected within 48 hours of completion

Correct Answer: B

Per NEC 110.12(A), unused openings other than those intended for the operation of equipment, those intended for mounting purposes, or those permitted as part of the design for listed equipment shall be effectively closed to afford protection substantially equivalent to the wall of the equipment. This is a key requirement under the mechanical execution of work section.
