What This Practice Exam Covers
The Idaho Plumbing Specialty Water Pump Journeyman licensing exam consists of 50 questions administered over 150 minutes. A score of 75% — 38 correct answers — is required to pass. What You'll Be Tested On
Chapter 1 — Administrative Provisions (11 items)
At 22% of the exam, Chapter 1 is too large to skip. Questions here test whether you can apply code administration rules the way an inspector or AHJ would — not just recall that rules exist.
Scope, purpose, and applicability (Sections 101.3, 102.1–102.4.1, 102.8): Know that the code applies to installation, alteration, repair, and replacement of plumbing systems, and that a change in building occupancy triggers full compliance with current code requirements for the affected system — not a grandfather exemption.
Authority Having Jurisdiction — duties, powers, and liability (Sections 104.2–104.5.2): The AHJ has the authority to approve or reject materials, require tests, and issue stop-work orders. Questions will test the limits of that authority and what liability protections apply.
Permit requirements and exempt work (Sections 105.2, 105.2.4, 105.4): You must know which work requires a permit and which is explicitly exempt. The exam will present a specific scenario and ask you to classify it — do not rely on general rules.
Permit application and construction documents (Sections 106.2, 106.3): Know what must be submitted, what the AHJ may require, and the conditions under which work may begin before full approval.
Permit issuance, validity, expiration, and revocation (Sections 107.1, 107.2): Permits expire after defined periods of inactivity. Questions test specific timelines and conditions for suspension or revocation.
Inspections (Sections 102.3, 104.3.3, 104.4.3): Know which inspections are required, when they must be scheduled relative to covering work, and what triggers a reinspection fee.
Chapter 2 — Definitions (6 items)
Six items may seem light, but definition questions are frequently the trickiest on the exam because wrong answers are plausible-sounding near-misses.
Potable water and distribution terminology: Know the distinctions between building supply, water distribution pipe, water main, riser, fixture branch, and fixture supply. These terms describe different segments of the same system — the exam will exploit any confusion between them.
Backflow and cross-connection terminology (Sections 203.0–218.0): Understand the mechanical difference between backsiphonage and backpressure backflow. Know what a cross-connection is and what "critical level" means for a backflow preventer.
Drainage system terminology (Section 204.0, 210.0): Building drain versus building sewer, soil pipe versus waste pipe, invert, grade — these appear in scenario-based questions where the wrong term produces the wrong answer.
Venting terminology: Distinguish dry vent, wet vent, vent stack, stack vent, branch vent, individual vent, relief vent, and yoke vent. These terms are easy to conflate under exam pressure.
Trap and fixture terminology: Know trap seal, trap arm, tailpiece, fixture unit, fixture drain, and bathroom group (Section 204.0). A bathroom group has a specific code definition that matters when sizing.
Pipe joining and materials abbreviations (Sections 211.0, 212.0): Know ABS, CPVC, PVC, PEX, PE, PP, and SDR. Know the definitions of brazed, soldered, welded, flanged, flared, and compression joints (Sections 212.0, Joint, Brazed and Joint, Soldered).
Chapter 3 — General Regulations (21 items)
This is the heaviest section at 42% of the exam — 21 items. Budget your study time accordingly.
Pipe and fitting standards (Sections 301.2.1–301.3.1.2): Materials must be listed, labeled, and marked. Know what each requirement means and what the AHJ can accept as an alternative.
Corrosion, freezing, and UV protection (Sections 310.1–310.6): Know which pipe materials require sleeving through corrosive soils, how to protect piping from freezing, and that dissimilar metal connections must be made at exposed or accessible locations per Section 310.6.
Pipe hangers and supports (Table 313.3, Table 313.3 Notes 1 and 2, Table 313.6): Hanger intervals differ by material. These tables generate direct calculation questions — bring your ability to read table footnotes, because the notes modify the base intervals.
Prohibited fittings and practices (Sections 301.5.3, 301.5.5): Know which fittings are prohibited in drainage and vent systems and why.
Trenching, backfill, and bedding (Sections 318.2–318.5): Thermoplastic pipe has specific bedding requirements. Know compaction requirements, trench width rules, and what materials are prohibited as backfill in direct contact with pipe.
Testing (Sections 312.1–312.14): Know the types of pressure tests, test durations, and required test pressures for water supply and drainage systems.
Chapter 6 — Water Supply and Distribution (12 items)
Backflow prevention devices (Sections 603.2–603.5.15, Table 603.2): Know air gap, AVB, PVB, SVB, DC assembly, and RP assembly — their components, minimum installation heights, and which hazard level each addresses. Section 603.5.7 on frost-proof hose bibbs is a tested favorite.
Cross-connection control (Sections 601.3.1–601.3.3): Know what connections are absolutely prohibited and what assembly is required when a high-hazard cross-connection cannot be eliminated.
Water supply piping materials and lead content (Sections 605.1.1, 605.1.3.1, 605.11.3, 605.12.2): Know which copper types are approved, PEX and CPVC standards, and the lead content threshold for potable water contact materials.
Joining methods by material (Sections 603.3.7, 603.4.3, 604.2–604.4): Soldered, brazed, flared, mechanical, solvent cement, heat-fusion, and push-fit joints each apply to specific materials — the exam will test mismatches.
Water system sizing (Sections 604.13, 605.1.1): Sizing questions use fixture units, pressure ranges, and developed length. Work through the fixture unit table methodically; skipping a step is the most common error.
Pressure regulators, expansion tanks, and relief valves (Sections 604.2, 604.3, 603.5.14.1, 603.5.15): Know when a pressure regulator is required, what an expansion tank addresses, and how relief valve discharge piping must terminate.
Worked Sample Questions
Question 1 — Dissimilar Metal Connections (Chapter 3)
You are installing a building drainage system and need to connect copper piping to steel piping at a transition point. According to the code, where must this connection of dissimilar metals be made?
A. Only within mechanical rooms
B. In concealed wall cavities using approved couplings
C. Only underground with dielectric fittings
D. In exposed or accessible locations
Correct Answer: D
The code is explicit on this point. Per 2017 ISPC Section 310.6, when dissimilar metals are joined, the point of connection shall be confined to exposed or accessible locations. The reasoning is straightforward: galvanic corrosion at the joint needs to be inspectable and serviceable. Concealed or underground connections would hide a potential failure point. Options A, B, and C each restrict the location in ways the code does not — only Option D matches the actual requirement.
Question 2 — Frost-Proof Hose Bibb (Chapter 6)
You are a journeyman plumber installing a potable water supply to an outdoor hose bibb in an area where freezing temperatures occur. What is the proper installation requirement?
A. Install an atmospheric vacuum breaker 12 inches above the highest point of usage
B. Install a reduced-pressure principle backflow prevention assembly at the point of connection
C. Install a listed self-draining frost-proof hose bibb with an integral backflow preventer or vacuum breaker
D. Install a double check valve backflow prevention assembly in an insulated enclosure
Correct Answer: C
Per 2017 ISPC, Section 603.5.7, in climates where freezing temperatures occur, a listed self-draining frost-proof hose bibb with an integral backflow preventer or vacuum breaker is required. Question 3 — Change of Occupancy (Chapter 1)
You arrive at a commercial building being converted from a warehouse to a restaurant. The building has an existing plumbing system. What requirement applies to the plumbing system due to this change in building occupancy?
A. The plumbing system shall be in accordance with the requirements of the code applicable to the new use or occupancy
B. Only the fixtures need to be updated; the piping system can remain as-is
C. The plumbing system only needs to be updated if the AHJ specifically orders it
D. The existing plumbing system is grandfathered in and does not need to meet any new requirements
Correct Answer: A
Per 2017 ISPC, Section 102.6, plumbing systems in a building undergoing a change in use or occupancy shall comply with the requirements applicable to the new use. A warehouse-to-restaurant conversion is a significant occupancy change — fixture counts, grease interception, and water supply demands all differ. The "grandfathered" defense (Option D) does not apply when occupancy changes. Options B and C both partially excuse the existing system in ways the code does not permit.
How to Read Your Score
The passing threshold is 75% — 38 out of 50 questions correct. On a practice exam, your score tells you where you stand, but a single result is a starting point, not a final verdict.
A first-attempt score below 65% is a clear signal: there are gaps in your code knowledge that need deliberate attention before exam day. A score between 65% and 74% means you understand the material broadly but are losing points on specific sections — likely the heavier-weighted ones. Scoring near the passing mark on practice exams usually means you need more work, not less; the real exam will not present the same questions.
Use your topic-by-topic breakdown as a triage tool. If Chapter 3 (21 items) is your weak area, that single section can swing your result by more than 14 percentage points — fixing it is more valuable than polishing Chapter 2. If Chapter 6 is costing you points, focus on backflow device selection and sizing procedures, which are the most frequently tested subtopics there. Take multiple full practice attempts so you encounter the breadth of the 323+ question pool, then revisit missed questions with the code open beside you.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Confusing similar definitions in Chapter 2 is a consistent point-drain. Backsiphonage and backpressure backflow are mechanically different; vent stack and stack vent are not interchangeable. One wrong term produces one wrong answer — six times over.
Misreading Table 313.3 and Table 313.6 in Chapter 3 causes avoidable losses. Candidates pick the base hanger interval without reading the footnotes (Notes 1 and 2 to Table 313.3 modify intervals for specific conditions). Always read the full table, including exceptions.
Skipping steps in water system sizing (Chapter 6) is the most punishing multi-step error. Fixture unit totals, developed length, and pressure ranges must all feed the sizing procedure in sequence. Jumping to a pipe size without completing all steps produces a wrong answer even if each individual step would have been correct.
Misclassifying backflow prevention assemblies by hazard level (Chapter 6) is another common loss. Candidates select a device they recognize without confirming it matches the hazard level described in the scenario.
Running out of time on Chapter 3 is a pacing problem. With 21 items in that section alone, candidates who linger on tough questions early can find themselves rushing through pipe support and testing questions — sections that reward careful reading, not speed.
