What You'll Be Tested On

Safety and Employee Protection — 15 questions

This is tied for the largest section on the exam. Questions go deeper than "wear a hard hat." You need to know OSHA recordkeeping cold: which injuries go on Form 300 vs. 301, how Form 300A works, and who is required to complete them. Reporting timelines for fatalities and hospitalizations are tested, as are record retention periods.

OSHA penalty types and dollar amounts are fair game — know the difference between willful, serious, and other-than-serious violations. Employee rights under the OSH Act matter here, especially anti-retaliation protections. Emergency action plans under 29 CFR 1926.35 are tested, including required elements and employee accounting procedures.

The Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1926.59) covers SDS sections and hazardous substance list requirements. Noise exposure under 29 CFR 1926.52, Table D-2 — including permissible limits at specific durations — shows up, and so does lead exposure under 29 CFR 1926.62, including action levels, engineering controls, respirator selection, and medical surveillance.

Roofing Preparation and Materials — 10 questions

Know your deck types: steel, concrete, wood panels, and wood planks each have specific substrate requirements. Underlayment materials — asphalt felt, synthetic, polymer-modified bitumen, and self-adhering sheets — are matched to specific roof system types.

Rigid board insulation is tested on R-values, thermal resistance calculations, and multilayer installation. Know the insulation types: EPS, polyisocyanurate, and others covered in the NRCA Membrane Roof Systems manual. Steep-slope materials — asphalt shingles, clay and concrete tile, slate, wood shakes, metal shingles — appear here alongside low-slope systems: built-up, modified bitumen, single-ply EPDM/TPO/PVC, liquid-applied, and SPF with its protective surfacing requirements.

Steep-Slope Roofing Systems — 15 questions

Another heavy section. Asphalt shingles are covered in depth — organic vs. fiberglass, laminated vs. three-tab, ASTM standards including D3161 and D7158 for wind resistance and impact ratings. Minimum slope requirements for each system type are tested, as are underlayment selection and application methods.

Flashing is a major area: valley types (open, closed, woven), step flashing, counterflashing, chimney details, and drip edge installation per the NRCA Architectural Metal Flashing manual. Clay, concrete, and slate tile profiles, physical properties, and top lap requirements get their own questions. Wood shakes and shingles: know the grades, species, treatment options, starter course requirements, and the minimum slope for low-slope application per Wood Shingles and Shakes, Chapter 6. Estimation math — calculating squares, waste factors, and bundle counts — shows up here too.

Low-Slope Roofing Systems — 10 questions

Built-up roof membrane types and components are tested: ply count, hot-applied asphalt, base sheets, and surface aggregate. Single-ply systems — EPDM, TPO, PVC — require you to know attachment methods (fully adhered, mechanically attached, ballasted) and material properties. APP vs. SBS modified bitumen: know the installation methods (torch, cold-applied, hot-applied) and when each is used.

SPF systems require knowledge of application requirements, protective surfacings, and substrate prep. Rigid insulation types, R-values, multilayer installation, and cover board requirements appear in this section, sourced from the NRCA Membrane Roof Systems manual.

Rules, Regulations and Business Practices — 15 questions

Illinois-specific law dominates here. The Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act (225 ILCS 335) is the primary source. Know license types, how the qualifying party works under 225 ILCS 335/2(h) and 225 ILCS 335/5(a-3), and what happens when a qualifying party leaves the company. Surety bond requirements, liability insurance minimums, advertising obligations, and permit rules are all tested.

Grounds for discipline, penalty procedures, and enforcement under 225 ILCS 335/9.1 are fair game. License renewal, restoration, and inactive status matter. Business structures — sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation — are tested on liability exposure, taxation, and management characteristics. Contract law (lump-sum, cost-plus, unit-price, change orders, retainage, liquidated damages) and daily report standards also appear in this section.

Non-Residential Roofing Systems — 15 questions

The final heavyweight section. BUR, single-ply, and modified bitumen appear again with a commercial emphasis. SPF systems — application, protective surfacings, re-cover requirements — get specific attention. Structural and architectural metal panel systems are a distinct area: panel profiles, standing seam vs. exposed fastener, seam types, slope requirements, and flashing details including ridges, hips, and valleys per the NRCA Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems manual.

What is the minimum height for toeboards on elevated work surfaces?

Correct Answer: B — 4 inches

OSHA requires toeboards to be at least 4 inches tall. This stops tools and materials from rolling off elevated platforms and falling onto workers below. Three inches is too short; 6 and 8 inches are above the minimum. The rule is straightforward, but candidates who confuse this with guardrail height requirements (which run much higher) pick C or D.


Question 2 — Steep-Slope Roofing Systems

A 4,000 sq ft roof requires 3 bundles per square. Waste factor is 10%. How many bundles must be ordered?

Correct Answer: D — 132 bundles

Work through it step by step:

  1. Convert square feet to squares: 4,000 ÷ 100 = 40 squares
  2. Apply the 10% waste factor: 40 × 1.10 = 44 squares
  3. Multiply by bundles per square: 44 × 3 = 132 bundles

Question 3 — Rules, Regulations and Business Practices

True or False: When keeping a daily report on a construction project, a contractor should include personal comments and opinions about crew members' attitudes in the log to provide complete documentation.

Correct Answer: FALSE

Daily reports are factual records. Personal opinions about workers do not belong in them. If a daily report ends up as evidence in a dispute or litigation, subjective comments about crew attitudes undermine its credibility and can create legal exposure. How to Read Your Score

Seventy percent is passing. On an 80-question exam, that's 56 correct.

Your first practice attempt is a diagnostic, not a verdict. A score of 55–65% tells you where the gaps are — it does not mean you're close to failing the real exam. It means the practice exam did its job and showed you where to focus.

Use the topic breakdown. If you're dropping points on Safety and Employee Protection or Rules and Regulations, those sections each carry 15 items on the real exam. A weak performance there costs you more than the same weakness in a 10-item section.

Scoring near 70% on practice is not enough. You want a comfortable margin — 80% or above on full practice exams — before sitting for the real test. The real exam has time pressure and no ability to flag and return. A practice score of 70% under relaxed conditions often translates to a narrower margin under test conditions. Keep working the topic areas where you lose points, and run multiple full practice attempts so you see a broad cross-section of the 471+ question pool.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Calculation errors in steep-slope and non-residential sections. Bundle counts, squares, waste factors, and R-value calculations all require step-by-step arithmetic. Skipping steps or applying the waste factor at the wrong stage costs you straightforward points.

Confusing Illinois-specific rules with general knowledge. The qualifying party requirements, bond amounts, and license restoration rules under 225 ILCS 335 are specific to Illinois. Don't substitute general contractor knowledge for the actual statute.

OSHA recordkeeping details. Candidates mix up which form records which type of incident, or they get the retention period wrong. Know Forms 300, 300A, and 301 as separate documents with distinct purposes.

Metal panel system specifics. Structural vs. architectural panels, seam profiles, and minimum slope requirements under the NRCA Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems manual are less familiar to candidates who primarily work steep-slope — and this section carries 15 items.

Running short on time. Ninety minutes for 80 questions averages just over a minute per question. Multi-step estimation problems in steep-slope and non-residential topics eat time. Practice with the clock running.
