What This Practice Exam Covers
The real Illinois Roofing Contractor exam is 130 questions. You have 150 minutes to finish. Passing requires a 70% — that's 91 correct answers. Six topic areas are tested, ranging from OSHA safety rules to Illinois licensing law to the technical details of steep-slope and low-slope systems.

What You'll Be Tested On
Safety and Employee Protection — 25 items
This is the heaviest safety section on the exam and one of the highest-stakes areas overall. Expect questions on OSHA recordkeeping: which incidents go on Form 300, what Form 300A is used for, and what Form 301 captures. Know the difference between OSHA penalty types — willful, serious, other-than-serious, repeat — and the dollar amounts attached to each (NASCLA Contractors Guide Ch. 11 — Penalties table).
Fall protection rules are heavily tested. Know the 6-foot trigger for residential roofing, the 5,000 lb lifeline breaking strength requirement, and low-slope roof rules under NRCA Safety Manual Ch. 11. Emergency action plan requirements under 29 CFR 1926.35 show up — know what elements a plan must include and how employee accounting works.
Environmental regulations cover asbestos (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 and EPA NESHAP), lead exposure under 29 CFR 1926.62, and hazardous waste transport under DOT rules. Know the asbestos Table 1 regulated operations, Table 2 exempt operations, and training duration requirements. For lead: the action level, the PEL, engineering controls hierarchy, and respirator selection tiers. Noise exposure limits from 29 CFR 1926.52 Table D-2 also appear — memorize the 90 dBA limit at 8 hours and what changes at 4-hour duration.
Roofing Preparation and Materials — 20 items
Know your underlayment types cold: asphalt felt (ASTM D4869 classifications), synthetic sheets (ASTM D8257), polymer-modified bitumen sheets, and self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen. Know which underlayment goes with which roof covering and slope condition. Ice and water shield application, single-layer vs. double-layer configurations, and interlayment for wood shakes are all fair game.
Roof deck types matter: plywood vs. OSB, spaced vs. solid sheathing, and when each is required. Low-slope insulation — EPS, polyisocyanurate, extruded polystyrene — will be tested on R-value concepts and multilayer installation rules (NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems, Section 4.3 for EPS specifics).
Steep-Slope Roofing Systems — 35 items
This is the largest section. Asphalt shingles dominate: ASTM D3462 (material standard), ASTM D3161 and D7158 (wind resistance), impact resistance ratings, self-sealing strip function, fastener specs, and exposure/head lap requirements. Bundle and square calculations appear as math questions — 3 bundles per square is the baseline, but know when that changes.
Clay and concrete tile: know ASTM C1167 (clay tile types) and ASTM C1492 (concrete tile, including Type II). Know breaking strength requirements, freeze-thaw grading, water absorption limits, and batten installation rules (Chapter 7, Tile Roofing). Slate roofing questions cover head lap by slope, fastener materials, graduated vs. standard vs. textural installation, and underlayment requirements (Chapter 8, Slate Roofing).
Wood shakes and shingles: know the species, grades, starter course requirements, spacing, and low-slope application limits (Chapter 6, Wood Shingles and Shakes). Metal shingles: know attachment systems and valley flashing configurations (NRCA Architectural Metal Flashing, Chapter 3, Section 3.4 Valleys — Metal Shingle Roof Systems).
Low-Slope Roofing Systems — 15 items
Membrane attachment methods are the core: hot-applied, torch-applied, cold-applied, mechanically attached, fully adhered, self-adhering, and ballasted. Know which method applies to BUR, APP-modified bitumen, SBS-modified bitumen, and single-ply membranes.
Slope and drainage requirements show up repeatedly — know the minimum slope for positive drainage and when tapered insulation is required (NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems, Section 5.1). Vapor retarder placement and air barrier function are tested. Ponding water is a failure condition — know what defines it and what the designer's obligation is.
Rules, Regulations and Business Practices — 20 items
Illinois-specific law. The Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act (225 ILCS 335) is the primary source. Know license types, what a qualifying party must do, insurance and bonding requirements, license renewal timelines, inactive status, and restoration procedures. Disciplinary grounds and penalty structures under 225 ILCS 335/9.1 and 225 ILCS 335/9.6 appear as direct questions.
Contract law questions cover rescission rights, trust fund provisions, and what a roofing contract must contain. Business practice questions pull from NASCLA Contractors Guide chapters on bonds (Miller Act, types of bonds), contract changes, liquidated damages, and business entity structures.
Non-Residential Roofing Systems — 15 items
BUR membrane components, ply count, and hot-applied asphalt. Single-ply systems: EPDM and thermoplastic (TPO/PVC) — attachment methods, corner flashing details, and independent securement of mechanically attached membranes (NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems, Chapter 10). SPF systems: weather conditions for application, surface texture classifications after curing, and required protective surfacings. Structural metal panel profiles, seam types (standing seam, mechanically seamed), and insulation under metal panels (blanket insulation vs. rigid board) round out this section.
Worked Sample Questions
Question 1 — Steep-Slope Roofing Systems
If 3 bundles cover one square, how many bundles are needed for a 24-square roof?

Correct answer: C. Multiply: 24 squares × 3 bundles per square = 72 bundles. No waste factor is applied here — the question gives you a clean conversion. On the real exam, read carefully whether waste or ridge/hip material is included in the square count.
Question 2 — Safety and Employee Protection
Worker weight: 250 lbs. Max arresting force OSHA allows: 1,800 lbs. What is the required lifeline breaking strength?

Correct answer: B. OSHA requires a minimum 5,000 lb breaking strength for lifelines used in personal fall arrest systems. The worker's weight and the maximum arresting force are context — the code sets a fixed 5,000 lb minimum regardless. See NRCA Safety Manual Ch. 11 — Fall Protection. Don't let the two numbers in the question stem distract you into doing math.
Question 3 — Roofing Preparation and Materials
A crew applies 600 sq ft/hour of ice and water shield. The roof requires 2,400 sq ft. How long will the install take?

Correct answer: B. Divide total area by production rate: 2,400 ÷ 600 = 4 hours. Straightforward unit math. On the real exam, watch that the area and rate use the same units — the exam occasionally uses square feet and squares interchangeably in different parts of a problem.
How to Read Your Score
Passing is 70% — 91 out of 130 correct. On the full practice exam, that's your target, but your first score is a diagnostic, not a verdict.
Score below 60%: You need significant study across multiple topic areas. Use the topic breakdown to find your lowest sections and work those first.
Score between 60–69%: You're close but not there yet. A few wrong answers in Steep-Slope or Safety — the two biggest sections — can push you below passing even if you're solid elsewhere.
Score above 70%: Good sign, but don't stop. Aim for 78–80% on practice before sitting the real exam. Nerves, time pressure, and unfamiliar phrasing all cost points on test day.
Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each attempt. If you're dropping points in Rules and Regulations, that's a reading-comprehension problem — go back to the Illinois statute sections. If you're losing points in Low-Slope Systems, that's a technical knowledge gap. Treat each section separately.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Running out of time. 130 questions in 150 minutes is just over a minute per question. Steep-Slope alone is 35 items. Don't sit on hard questions — flag and move.
Mixing up Illinois license law details. The exam distinguishes between license types, qualifying party obligations, bonding amounts, and renewal periods under 225 ILCS 335. Candidates who study generically get these wrong.
OSHA form confusion. Forms 300, 300A, and 301 each have distinct purposes. Mixing them up is a common error that costs easy points in the Safety section.
Asphalt shingle standards. ASTM D3462, D3161, and D7158 are different standards for different properties. Candidates who can't separate them lose multiple points in the Steep-Slope section.
Multi-step math errors. Bundle calculations, production rate questions, and exposure/head lap math all require clean arithmetic. Write out the steps — a unit error in step one cascades.
Underlayment configuration rules. Single-layer vs. double-layer, interlayment for shakes, and ice-and-water-shield trigger conditions are frequently confused. Know which slope thresholds change the requirement.
