Sample 1 — Administration General Regulations
Question: There is insufficient evidence that a proposed piping product conforms to the plumbing code, so the code official requires tests as evidence of compliance. Such tests shall be performed by:
- A. A registered design professional
- B. The code official or a deputy
- C. The permit holder
- D. An approved agency
Correct Answer: D
Per IPC 105.3.2, tests required under 105.3 shall be performed by an approved agency, and under 105.3 they are made at no expense to the jurisdiction. The permit holder makes the plumbing system tests required by 312/107.4, which is a different requirement.

Sample 2 — Gas Piping
Question: On a residential project you run a single underground branch that serves only a permanently piped outdoor grill and outdoor gas lights. The route is approved by the code official and is in a location not susceptible to physical damage. What is the minimum depth below finished grade for this line?
- A. 12 inches
- B. 24 inches
- C. 18 inches
- D. 8 inches
Correct Answer: D
IFGC 404.12 sets a general minimum burial depth of 12 inches for underground piping, but 404.12.1 permits individual lines to outdoor lights, grills and similar appliances to be installed not less than 8 inches below finished grade where the installation is approved and is in a location not susceptible to physical damage.

Sample 3 — Plumbing Fixtures
Question: A school toilet room is served by a circular group wash-up fixture providing 60 inches of usable rim space. For purposes of meeting the minimum required number of fixtures, how many lavatories does this group wash-up fixture represent?
- A. 5
- B. 4
- C. 3
- D. 2
Correct Answer: C
Per IPC 2018 Section 419.1, every 20 inches of rim space is considered as one lavatory. 60 inches ÷ 20 inches = 3 lavatories. Group wash-up equipment must also conform to the material requirements of Section 402.
