What This Practice Exam Covers

The South Carolina Plumber licensing exam consists of 80 questions answered in 240 minutes, with a passing score of 70% (56 correct). The exam spans 25 topic areas ranging from IPC code fundamentals to multi-step isometric calculations for DWV and water supply systems.

What You'll Be Tested On

DWV Isometric Analysis — 10 items (the single heaviest topic)
This section requires you to read isometric drawings and perform real calculations: drainage fixture unit (DFU) loads per IPC 2021 Table 709.1, horizontal and vertical drain sizing from Tables 710.1(1) and 710.1(2), pipe slope requirements, vent sizing with developed length, and offset geometry using 45° constants. Expect to calculate diagonal, rise, and run from actual dimensions. Trap-to-vent distance limits also appear here.

Sanitary Venting — 6 items
Know the full spectrum of vent types: individual, common, wet, circuit, combination waste-and-vent, and waste stack vent. Air admittance valve installation and use limitations are fair game. Critical numbers include the maximum allowable trap seal pressure differential, minimum vent terminal heights and prohibited locations, and frost-closure diameter requirements for cold climates. Vent pipe sizing uses IPC 2021 Table 906.1 with developed length. See IPC Section 903.2 for roof extension sizing in cold design temperatures.

General Plumbing Knowledge — 6 items
Covers IPC scope and applicability, permit requirements (application, issuance, expiration, exempt work), inspection types (underground, rough-in, final, pressure tests), code official authority and stop work orders, key IPC definitions, and general installation rules for pipe protection, support intervals, trenching, and backfill.

Plumbing — Developed Length — 5 items
Pure math. You will calculate center-to-center versus end-to-end pipe lengths using fitting allowances for threaded, copper, PVC, and cast iron fittings. Offset problems use angle constants for 45°, 60°, 22½°, and 11¼° bends. Rolling offsets and true offsets also appear. Slope and grade of horizontal drainage pipe is tested both as a standalone calculation and as part of cleanout spacing.

Water Heaters — 4 items
Temperature and pressure relief valve requirements and discharge piping rules (IPC 2021 Section 504.6 and Section 504.7) are central. Also know pan requirements, vacuum relief valves, cold water supply valves, maximum temperature limits, and attic installation requirements. Gas-fired water heater listing standards (ANSI Z21.10.1/CSA 4.1) are also in scope.

Sanitary Drainage Systems — 4 items
DFU values and system sizing tables, horizontal slope requirements, cleanout placement and sizing, approved pipe materials for above-ground and below-ground applications, sump and ejector systems, and trap seal requirements including prohibited trap types.

Water Supply Isometric Analysis — 4 items
Fixture unit loads using water supply fixture units (WSFU), pressure loss calculations covering elevation head, meter loss, tap loss, and friction loss, and the segmented loss method for sizing pipe. Equivalent lengths of fittings and valves factor into sizing. Offset geometry — diagonal, rise, run — also appears.

General Plumbing Regulations — 3 items
Permit issuance and exemptions, code official enforcement authority, inspection requirements, violations and condemnation procedures, and South Carolina-specific SC 811 excavator notification rules including tolerance zone requirements and hand-dig rules near underground facilities.

Joints and Connections — 3 items
Joint types by material (ABS, PVC, CPVC, PEX, copper, steel, cast iron), prohibited joints in water supply and drainage systems, solvent cementing procedures and primer requirements, solder and brazed joint rules for copper, mechanical and press-connect installation, and dielectric fittings for dissimilar material connections. Lead content restrictions for solder and fittings are included.

Fixtures and Equipment — 3 items
Minimum fixture counts by occupancy, fixture clearances, materials and product standards, water heater safety devices, and accessible fixture requirements per ICC A117.1.

Traps and Interceptors — 3 items
Trap sizing and maximum distance limits, seal depth requirements, grease interceptor applicability and sizing, oil separator requirements, and venting of interceptors to prevent air binding. Prohibited trap types are frequently tested.

Natural Gas — 3 items
Approved gas piping materials (steel, copper, CSST, polyethylene), pipe sizing using the longest length and branch length methods with IFGC Table 402.4(2) for Schedule 40 metallic pipe at 0.5 in. w.c. pressure drop, combustion air calculations, and venting system termination clearances.

LP-Gas — 3 items
LP-gas system design and sizing parallels the natural gas section but with LP-specific pressure requirements (first-stage, second-stage, low-pressure regulators), approved materials, pressure testing, leak checking, and venting.

General Fuel Knowledge — 3 items
Fuel gas types and properties (specific gravity, BTU content of natural gas vs. LP-gas), key IFGC definitions, scope and applicability, prohibited appliance locations, combustion air requirements, and gas leak recognition indicators.

Indirect and Special Waste — 2 items
Air gap versus air break distinctions, where indirect waste connections are required (food service equipment, dishwashers, sterilizers, humidifiers), waste receptor installation requirements, standpipe dimensional limits, and neutralization devices for corrosive waste.

Hangers and Supports — 2 items
Hanger spacing by pipe material, maximum horizontal and vertical support intervals per IPC Section 308.5 and Table 308.5, approved materials for hangers and anchors (including galvanic action prevention), and sway bracing for horizontal drainage at direction changes.

Cleanouts — 2 items
Required cleanout locations (horizontal drains, building drains, direction changes), spacing intervals and how developed length is measured for cleanout spacing, sizing relative to the pipe served per IPC Sections 708.1.1 and 708.1.4, plug materials, and access clearances.

Materials — 2 items
Approved pipe and fitting standards for water service, water distribution, and sanitary drainage/vent systems. Joining methods by material and lead content restrictions for water supply components.

Roof Drain Isometric Analysis — 3 items
Rainfall rate conversion to GPM using IPC 2021 Section 1106.2.1 Equation 11-1, roof drain sizing, horizontal and vertical storm drain pipe sizing from IPC 2021 Tables 1106.2 and 1106.3, secondary roof drain and scupper sizing, and 100-year hourly rainfall rates for specific geographic areas.

Storm Piping Systems — 2 items
Storm drain sizing using rainfall rate and roof area, approved pipe materials for conductors and building storm sewers, roof drain flow rates, secondary (emergency) drain placement, subsoil drain systems, and sump pit dimensions and pump capacity.

ADA Accessibility — 1 item
Water closet clearance dimensions and seat height, grab bar specifications per ICC A117.1 Sections 604.4, shower compartment types and dimensions (transfer-type, standard roll-in, alternate roll-in), lavatory mounting heights and knee/toe clearance per ICC A117.1 Section 602.2.3, and drinking fountain requirements for wheelchair users.

Backflow Prevention — 1 item
Know backsiphonage versus backpressure, high-hazard versus low-hazard classifications, and device selection for each scenario: reduced pressure principle assemblies, atmospheric and pressure vacuum breakers, double check assemblies, and air gap minimum dimensions per IPC 2021 Table 608.16.1.

Valves — 1 item
Full-open and shutoff valve placement, pressure-reducing valves, T&P relief valves, backflow preventer classification, gas shutoff valve location and identification, and appliance shutoff valve placement requirements.

Pipe Assembly — 1 item
Fitting allowance calculations, center-to-center versus end-to-end measurements, offset geometry using 45° constants, joint types by material, pipe schedules, and drainage slope requirements.


Worked Sample Questions

Sample 1 — DWV Isometric Analysis

Question: For a fixture not listed in the drainage fixture unit table, what determines its DFU value?

  • A. The fixture's water supply connection size
  • B. The fixture's outlet size, referenced to a DFU-by-trap-size table
  • C. The fixture's total water consumption per cycle
  • D. The fixture's mounting height above the finished floor

Correct Answer: B

When a fixture does not appear in IPC 2021 Table 709.1, you do not guess or use the water supply size — you go to the outlet. Per IPC 2021 Section 709.2, the DFU load is assigned based on the fixture outlet size using Table 709.2 (the DFU-by-trap-size table), and the minimum trap size shall equal the drainage outlet size but not less than 1¼ inches. This matters on isometric problems where unlisted specialty fixtures appear mid-system.

Sample 2 — General Plumbing Knowledge

Question: You are installing an on-site graywater reuse system and need to install a bypass valve on the collection piping upstream of the storage tank. What type of valve is required?

  • A. A ball valve listed to NSF 372
  • B. A gate valve listed to NSF 61
  • C. A three-way diverter valve listed to NSF 50
  • D. A check valve listed to NSF 14

Correct Answer: C

This question tests a specific product standard, not just a valve category. IPC 2021 Section 1302.8.1 requires one three-way diverter valve listed and labeled to NSF 50 — or another approved device — on collection piping upstream of each storage tank, so the system can be diverted to the sanitary sewer during servicing and inspection. Substituting a ball valve or gate valve, even a water-quality-listed one, does not satisfy this requirement.

Sample 3 — Sanitary Venting

Question: You are designing a vent system where the 97.5-percent outdoor design temperature is −5°F. Vent extensions through the roof must be a minimum of what diameter to prevent frost closure?

  • A. 3 inches
  • B. 1½ inches
  • C. 4 inches
  • D. 2 inches

Correct Answer: A

Cold climate frost closure is a specific dimensional trigger, not a judgment call. IPC Section 903.2 states that where the 97.5-percent outdoor design temperature is 0°F or less, vent extensions through a roof or wall shall be not less than 3 inches in diameter. Any required size increase must be made at least 1 foot inside the building's thermal envelope. At −5°F, the threshold is clearly met, so the 3-inch minimum applies.

How to Read Your Score

The passing threshold is 70% — 56 correct out of 80 questions. On practice, treat your first score as a diagnostic, not a verdict. A first attempt tells you which topic areas need work, not whether you are ready.

Scoring below 60% on your first full practice attempt is normal and actionable — use the topic-by-topic breakdown to find your weakest areas and target those first. The heaviest hitters are DWV Isometric Analysis (10 items), Sanitary Venting (6 items), General Plumbing Knowledge (6 items), and Developed Length calculations (5 items). Weakness in any one of these costs you more points than weakness in a 1-item topic like ADA Accessibility or Backflow Prevention.

Scoring 60–69% on practice usually means you are close but not ready. One or two shaky topic areas can swing you below the threshold on test day. Keep drilling the full practice exam — because it pulls from a 1,043+ question pool, each attempt surfaces new questions and closes blind spots.

Scoring 70% or above consistently across multiple full attempts is a meaningful readiness indicator, especially if your math sections (Isometric Analysis, Developed Length) are solid.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Math sections under time pressure. DWV Isometric Analysis (10 items) and Developed Length (5 items) together represent nearly 19% of the exam. Candidates who work these correctly but slowly run out of time on later topics. Practice pacing — allocate roughly 3 minutes per question as a ceiling.

Wrong table or wrong method. Gas pipe sizing questions hinge on which method applies — longest length versus branch length — and which table column (pressure drop, specific gravity, pipe material). Using the wrong IFGC Table 402.4(2) column produces a plausible but wrong answer.

DFU unlisted fixture trap. Candidates frequently assign DFU values by water supply size rather than outlet size, reversing the correct rule under IPC 2021 Section 709.2.

Frost-closure diameter. The 3-inch minimum for vent roof penetrations in climates at 0°F or colder (IPC Section 903.2) is a specific trigger candidates skip if they haven't memorized the threshold temperature.

Cleanout spacing measurement. Misidentifying where developed length measurement starts and ends causes errors on cleanout placement questions citing IPC Sections 708.1.1 and 708.1.4.

SC 811 specifics. The General Plumbing Regulations section includes South Carolina-specific excavator notification rules and tolerance zone requirements — content that is not in the IPC and is easy to underestimate during prep.

Offset geometry errors. Rolling offset calculations and true offset constants (45°, 60°, 22½°) require the correct multiplier from the reference tables. Using the diagonal constant for the travel calculation when the question asks for rise is a common and costly mistake.
