What You'll Be Tested On
Drain, Waste, Vent, and Sewers — 17 items (26% of exam)
The single heaviest topic. Expect questions on DWV system design and sizing, trap requirements (minimum/maximum seal depths, trap-to-vent distances from IRC Table P3105.1), cleanout placement rules, and building sewer installation. Sewage ejector and sump pump specs are tested — know basin sizing, check valve requirements, and discharge line rules from IRC 2018 Sections P3007.1–P3007.6. Roof drain installation and indirect waste connections also appear. This topic rewards candidates who can work from code tables, not just general memory.
Isometric Analysis — 9 items (14% of exam)
These questions present DWV isometric drawings and ask you to identify pipe types, flow directions, vent branches, stack configurations, and fitting locations from the drawing alone. You must read legends correctly (solid vs. dashed lines, fixture callouts, VTR labels) and extract dimensional or connectivity information without redrawing anything. IRC Appendix N Figures N1–N7 (pages 893–898) are the direct source material. Practice reading these figures until the symbology is automatic.
General Plumbing Knowledge and Regulations — 15 items (23% of exam)
A broad category covering faucet repair, soldering and solvent-welding procedures, head pressure calculations (convert feet of elevation to PSI: multiply feet × 0.433), area and volume calculations, and water supply friction loss. Testing procedures are heavily represented — know smoke test parameters (IRC P2503.5.2), air test pressures (IRC P2503.5.1), and water test requirements. Expect at least one multi-step calculation question.
Piping, Valves, and Controls — 6 items
Covers PVC, CPVC, galvanized, copper tubing, and copper pipe installation. Know material standards, acceptable joint types for each material, underground installation requirements (depth, bedding, sleeving through concrete), and support spacing from IRC Table P2605.1 / IPC Table 308.5. Copper vs. CPVC joining methods are a common distractor.
Specialty Applications — 6 items
Water heater installation is the core subtopic: temperature and pressure relief valve requirements (Sections P2804.3, P2804.4, P2804.6), expansion tank requirements, and gas appliance connections. Backflow prevention installation and water conditioning/filtration systems also appear. Know the difference between installation and testing requirements for each device type.
Fixtures and Equipment — 4 items
Minimum fixture counts by occupancy type (IPC 2021, Table 403.1), clearance requirements (ICC A117.1-2017, Section 604.4 for water closet spacing), and fixture material standards. Know IPC Section 401.2 for minimum required fixtures and Section 403.2 exceptions.
Water Supply — 4 items
Backflow prevention device selection by hazard type, cross-connection control rules, pipe material standards for water service, and system design using fixture unit values. Know IPC 2021 Sections 608.9.1, 608.9.2, and Table 608.9.2.2 for air gap and backflow device requirements. Nonpotable water labeling requirements also appear.
Safety — 4 items
Drawn entirely from 29 CFR 1926. Tested areas include: PPE employer responsibility (§1926.95(d)(1)), first aid kit requirements (§1926.50), trench and excavation protection (§1926.652(a)(1)), and asbestos handling procedures (§1926.1101). Know the specific numeric thresholds — trench depths requiring protection, permissible exposure limits — not just general safety concepts.

IRC 2018 Section P3201.2.1.4 lists four approved methods for protecting floor drain trap seals from evaporation. One approved method is a barrier-type trap seal protection device that conforms to ASSE 1072, installed per the manufacturer's instructions. Deeper trap seals (Option A) and mineral oil fills (Option D) are not on the approved list. Building traps (Option B) are upstream and do not protect individual floor drain seals. The exam tests whether you know the specific standard number — ASSE 1072 — not just the concept.
Question 2 — General Plumbing Knowledge and Regulations
During a finished plumbing smoke test for DWV gas-tightness, after sealing the vent terminals, what pressure must be applied and for how long?

Correct answer: D
Per IRC P2503.5.2, once smoke appears at vent terminals and those terminals are sealed, a pressure equivalent to a 1-inch water column must be maintained for not less than 15 minutes. The exam uses wrong-duration and wrong-pressure distractors that sound plausible. Commit both numbers — 1 inch and 15 minutes — together, not separately.
Question 3 — Isometric Analysis
Based on the DWV isometric shown, the dashed piping at callouts C and F (the line labeled 'vent (dashed)' and continuing 'through roof (VTR)') carries which of the following?

Passing requires 45 out of 65 correct (68%). On your first practice attempt, treat the score as a diagnostic, not a verdict. Most candidates underestimate DWV and Isometric Analysis — together they account for 26 questions, 40% of the exam.
Use your topic-by-topic breakdown this way:
- Below 60% on a topic — go back to the code sections directly. Don't guess; look it up.
- 60–70% on a topic — you know the concepts but are losing points on specific numbers, table values, or exceptions.
- Above 80% on a topic — move on; more practice here has diminishing returns.
Scoring 68–72% on a first full practice attempt usually means you are close but not ready. A few wrong answers in DWV or Isometric Analysis can push you below passing on the real exam. Aim for 75%+ on practice before sitting.
Where Candidates Lose Points
DWV sizing and trap rules — Candidates confuse maximum trap-to-vent distances with minimum pipe slopes, or apply the wrong table. IRC 2018 Table P3105.1 and Table P3005.1 are separate tables; mixing them up costs points.
Isometric drawing misreads — The most common error is ignoring the legend. Solid vs. dashed lines have defined meanings; guessing based on pipe position rather than the legend loses points on nearly every isometric question.
Calculation errors in General Knowledge — Head pressure questions require the 0.433 psi/foot conversion. Volume and area questions sometimes embed a unit conversion (inches to feet) in the problem. Candidates who skip the conversion choose a wrong answer that is otherwise numerically logical.
Smoke test vs. air test parameters — IRC P2503.5.1 (air test) and P2503.5.2 (smoke test) use different pressures and durations. Mixing these up is one of the most common single-point errors on this exam.
Safety numeric thresholds — 29 CFR 1926 questions test specific numbers: trench depths, permissible exposure limits, first aid kit requirements. Vague familiarity with OSHA principles is not enough.
Running out of time — 180 minutes for 65 questions is about 2 minutes 45 seconds per question. Isometric and calculation questions take longer; budget time accordingly and flag, don't stall.
