What This Practice Exam Covers
The Virginia Contractor General Portion exam consists of 50 questions answered in 100 minutes. The passing score is 70%, meaning you need at least 35 correct answers. What You'll Be Tested On
Estimating and Bidding — 10 items (20% of exam)
This is the heaviest topic and demands real calculation skill. You need to know the quantity take-off method: measuring from plans to determine how many units of material you need, then applying the material cost formula (Price per Unit × Number of Units). Labor cost questions require you to calculate both base wages and labor burden — the mandatory add-ons like FICA, workers' comp, and unemployment that increase the true cost of an hour of labor beyond the wage rate. Equipment cost estimation, project overhead vs. company overhead, and markup calculation each appear as distinct sub-skills. Ethics questions cover bid shopping (using a sub's price to solicit a lower bid from a competitor), bid peddling (a sub volunteering a lower price to replace an awarded sub), and bid rigging (illegal collusion between bidders). Know these distinctions cold — the exam tests them by scenario, not by definition.
Contract Management — 10 items (20% of exam)
Tied with Estimating for the most items. You must know all five required elements of a legally binding contract — offer, acceptance, consideration, competent parties, and legal purpose — and be able to apply them to scenario questions. Virginia's written contract requirements for residential projects are tested directly. Understand the three contract price structures (lump-sum, unit-price, cost-plus) and the mechanics of progress payments, retainage, and final payment. Breach of contract questions may involve liquidated damages or statute of limitations. Change order and indemnification clause questions require you to understand what these provisions actually do, not just recognize the terms.
Project Management — 7 items (14% of exam)
Scheduling is the centerpiece here. Know the three scheduling methods — calendar, bar chart/Gantt, and critical path method (CPM) — including what CPM uniquely reveals: the longest sequence of dependent tasks that determines minimum project duration. Float time (the amount a non-critical task can slip without delaying the project) and contingency time appear as distinct concepts. Role questions test whether you know the difference between a superintendent, foreman, and materials expediter. The three project life cycle phases — pre-construction, construction, and closeout — each have distinct activities, and the exam may ask you to place a specific activity in the right phase.
Financial Management — 5 items (10% of exam)
Expect questions on financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows) and what each reports. Financial ratio questions may ask you to calculate or interpret liquidity, quick, activity, debt, or profitability ratios. The cash method vs. accrual method distinction is tested, as are the three contract accounting methods: completed contract, percentage of completion, and cost comparison.
Safety — 5 items (10% of exam)
OSHA's construction safety rules under 29 CFR 1926 dominate this section. Fall protection triggers at 6 feet on construction sites (§1926.501(b)(1)). Guardrail systems must withstand specific load requirements (§1926.502(b)(4)). Personal fall arrest systems have defined anchorage and arresting force limits (§1926.502(d)(15)). Stair rail and handrail specifications come from §1926.1052(c)(1); portable ladder safety from §1926.1053(b)(1). Fire extinguisher placement rules appear under §1926.150(c)(1)(i) and flammable liquid storage under §1926.152(b)(1). Memorize the trigger heights and load specs — the exam tests numbers, not concepts.
Federal and State Taxes — 4 items (8% of exam)
Know which tax form goes with which entity type — Schedule C for sole proprietors, Form 1065 for partnerships, Form 1120 for C corporations. Self-employment tax, FICA withholding, FUTA, and Form 941 deposit schedules are all tested. The 1099-MISC reporting threshold and EIN requirements round out this section.
Risk Management — 3 items (6% of exam)
Distinguish property insurance types (builders risk, inland marine, equipment floater) from liability types (CGL, umbrella, completed operations, professional liability). Workers' compensation Virginia requirements and unemployment insurance — including SUTA dumping — are tested. For bonds, know the six types: bid, performance, payment, maintenance, fidelity, and lien bonds, and understand what triggers each.
Labor Laws — 3 items (6% of exam)
FLSA overtime rules (time-and-a-half for hours over 40 in a workweek), exempt vs. non-exempt classification, Form I-9 documentation, minor worker restrictions, Virginia new hire reporting, and ADA reasonable accommodation standards are all fair game.
Business Organization — 2 items (4% of exam)

One question, but it can turn on precise details: who qualifies for a mechanic's lien, filing deadlines for the memorandum of lien, and notice requirements for one- and two-family residential dwellings under Virginia Code § 43-4.01(C). Lien priorities are governed by Virginia Code § 43-23.

How to Read Your Score
The passing threshold is 70% — 35 correct out of 50. On your first practice attempt, treat your score as a diagnostic, not a verdict. Most candidates who are genuinely ready for the exam score well above 70% consistently across multiple full-length attempts, not just once.
If you score below 60%, you have clear gaps to close before sitting for the real exam. If you score between 60% and 69%, you are close but not safely there — one or two weak topic areas are likely dragging your score. Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each full practice attempt to identify exactly which areas cost you points. The 10-item sections (Estimating and Bidding, Contract Management) have the most leverage: improving from 60% to 80% on either of those alone adds two points to your total exam score.
Scoring near 70% on practice exams is not comfortable margin — the real exam will include questions you haven't seen, and the pressure of a timed, proctored environment adds friction. Aim for consistent 80%+ scores on the full practice exam before scheduling your real attempt.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Estimating calculations done out of order. The exam tests a multi-step sequence: direct costs → labor burden → project overhead → markup. Candidates who confuse project overhead with company overhead, or apply markup before adding overhead, arrive at wrong totals even when they know the formulas.
Safety trigger heights and load specs memorized loosely. Fall protection at 6 feet, guardrail top rail at 42 inches (±3 inches), 200-pound point load requirement — these are distinct numbers tested by specific OSHA sections (§1926.501(b)(1), §1926.502(b)(4)). Candidates who remember "approximately 6 feet" or "around 200 pounds" miss questions that hinge on the exact figure.
Confusing bid shopping, bid peddling, and bid rigging. All three are unethical or illegal, but they describe different actors doing different things. The exam presents scenarios where you must identify which practice is occurring — a general contractor fishing for a lower sub price versus a sub voluntarily undercutting a competitor are tested as different violations.
Mixing up contract types on payment questions. Lump-sum, unit-price, and cost-plus contracts each have distinct payment mechanics. Applying retainage rules from one contract type to a scenario involving another is a common wrong-answer trap.
Lien law precision. With only one lien item on the exam, candidates often under-prepare this topic. But that one question frequently turns on a deadline or a notice requirement — details that matter under Virginia Code § 43-4.01(C) and § 43-23 — where a vague recollection is not enough.
