What This Practice Exam Covers

The Virginia Master Electrician licensing exam consists of 90 questions answered in 270 minutes, with a passing score of 70% (63 correct). The exam spans 24 topic areas drawn from the NEC 2020, Virginia contractor licensing regulations, and electrical safety standards.

What You'll Be Tested On

The 24 topic areas are not equally weighted. Here is what each one actually demands:

Standards of Practice (3 items) — Know the Class A, B, and C contractor classification thresholds, what constitutes unlicensed contracting activity under Virginia law, and the specific grounds under which the Virginia Board for Contractors can deny, suspend, or revoke a license.

Standards of Conduct (2 items) — Questions focus on prohibited acts: aiding unlicensed contractors, misrepresentation in licensure applications, and mandatory reporting of criminal convictions and out-of-state disciplinary actions. Know the spectrum of penalties from remedial education through revocation.

Renewal and Reinstatement (2 items) — Know license expiration periods by trade designation, continuing education requirements for renewal versus reinstatement, and the maximum reinstatement window. Miss the reinstatement deadline and a new application is required.

Definitions (1 item) — NEC 2020 Article 100 definitions are tested directly. Know the distinctions between a grounded conductor and a grounding electrode conductor, between a receptacle and an outlet, and between exposed and concealed wiring. Terms like service point, separately derived system, and multiwire branch circuit appear in the question bank.

Qualification for Licensure (1 item) — Experience and education thresholds for master versus journeyman licensure, minimum age requirements, and examination conduct rules.

Revocation of Licensure (1 item) — Grounds for revocation under Virginia regulations and NEC Informative Annex H (Sections 80.13, 80.15, 80.19, 80.27), including permit revocation for false statements.

General Electrical Knowledge (4 items) — Covers grounding electrode system types, equipment grounding conductors, GFCI/AFCI branch circuit protection, and service entrance disconnecting means. Expect calculation and application questions mixed with code recall.

Requirements for Electrical Installations (3 items) — Working space and clearance requirements per NEC 2020 Section 110.26(A)(1) and Table 110.26(A)(1), arc-flash warning marking under Section 110.21(A)(2), equipment listing requirements, and terminal temperature ratings under Section 110.14(C)(1)(b).

Electrical-Electronic Fundamentals (5 items) — Grounding and bonding is the heaviest subtopic here: main bonding jumpers, system bonding jumpers, grounding of separately derived systems, and EGC sizing. Know the performance requirement stated in NEC 2020 Section 250.4(A)(5).

Branch Circuits (7 items) — One of the heavier sections. Expect GFCI location requirements (Section 210.8(A)(6)), AFCI protection for dwelling units (Section 210.12(A)), branch-circuit load calculations, and multiwire branch circuit rules. Know the specific required circuits for dwelling units: small-appliance, laundry, and bathroom.

Service and Feeders (8 items) — The heaviest regulatory section. Calculations involving lighting load at VA/sq ft (Table 220.12), service conductor sizing, feeder sizing, and service disconnect ratings. Know overhead conductor clearances and underground wiring method requirements.

Grounding and Bonding (8 items) — Tied for the most items on the exam. Electrode system composition under Section 250.50, GEC sizing per Section 250.66(B), bonding of metal piping systems per Section 250.104(A)(1), and equipment grounding conductor types including the specific listing at Section 250.118(5).

Conductors and Cables (7 items) — Ampacity selection from Table 310.12, ambient temperature correction factors per Table 310.15(C)(1), adjustment factors for bundled conductors per Section 310.15(B)(2), and parallel conductor requirements. Also covers cable type uses: NM, NMC, MC, AC, SE, USE, UF — where each is permitted and where it is not.

Raceways and Boxes (7 items) — Conduit fill using NEC Chapter 9 Tables 1, 4, and 5; box fill under Section 314.16(B); pull and junction box sizing under Section 314.28(A); and securing/support intervals for EMT (Section 358.30), FMC (Section 348.30(A)), PVC (Section 352.44), and RMC/IMC. Maximum bends per run is a common question type (NEC 358.26 for EMT).

Special Occupancies (4 items) — Class I, II, and III hazardous location classifications, Division 1 versus Division 2, Zone classification, and protection techniques (explosionproof, dust-ignitionproof, intrinsic safety). Also covers pool and spa GFCI and equipotential bonding requirements, and health care facility essential electrical system branches.

Special Equipment (2 items) — Elevator hoistway wiring methods (Section 620.3), disconnecting means for cranes and hoists (Section 610.57), and pool/spa underwater luminaire wiring (Section 680.51(B)).

Electrical Signs and Outline Lighting (2 items) — Required branch circuits for commercial signs, disconnecting means location and lockability, and neon secondary-circuit wiring for circuits over 1,000 volts (Section 600.32(A)(3) and Section 600.41(C)).

Motors and Controls (8 items) — Tied for most items on the exam. Motor branch-circuit conductor sizing at 125% of FLA (Section 430.22), overload protection sizing per Section 430.32(A)(1), short-circuit protective device ratings from Table 430.52, disconnecting means ratings under Section 430.110(A), and motor controller requirements. Calculations from Table 430.250 appear frequently.

Utilization Equipment (5 items) — Luminaire installation by location, motor overload sizing, appliance branch-circuit overcurrent protection, and fixed space-heating equipment sizing per Section 424.4(A) and Section 424.22(B).

Lighting (2 items) — Recessed luminaire clearances and Type IC vs. non-IC ratings (Section 410.116(A)(1)), lighting track prohibited locations (Section 410.16(C)(1)), and luminaire support methods.

General Low Voltage Requirements (1 item) — Class 1, 2, and 3 circuit distinctions, low-voltage lighting systems under Section 411.3, and separation requirements from power conductors.

Communication Systems (1 item) — Cable type substitution hierarchy, grounding of primary protectors per Section 810.21(H), and plenum/riser/general-purpose installation locations.

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (2 items) — NPLFA versus PLFA circuit classification, cable listings (FPLP, FPLR, FPL), circuit integrity (CI) cable requirements, and separation from power conductors.

Safety (4 items) — Lockout/tagout program elements, steps to establish an electrically safe work condition, arc flash boundary determination, and PPE category selection. Expect scenario-based questions, not pure recall.


Worked Sample Questions

Question 1 — Service and Feeders

A retail space is 8,000 sq ft. The lighting load is calculated at 3.5 VA per square foot. What is the calculated lighting load?

  • A. 26,500 VA
  • B. 29,000 VA
  • C. 25,000 VA
  • D. 28,000 VA

Why D is correct: Multiply the area by the unit load: 8,000 × 3.5 = 28,000 VA. The 3.5 VA/sq ft unit load for retail/stores comes from NEC 2020 Table 220.12. This is a direct multiplication — no demand factor applies at this step. Candidates lose points here by applying a demand factor before the problem calls for one, or by misreading the square footage.


Question 2 — Grounding and Bonding

An equipotential bonding grid is required around outdoor pools. How far must it extend from the pool edge?

  • A. 18 inches
  • B. 24 inches
  • C. 36 inches
  • D. 48 inches

Why C is correct: NEC 2020 Section 680.26(B)(2) requires the equipotential bonding for perimeter surfaces to extend 3 feet (36 inches) horizontally beyond the inside walls of the pool. The 18-inch figure is a common distractor — it applies to other pool clearances. Getting this wrong almost always comes from confusing multiple pool-related dimensions.


Question 3 — Motors and Controls

A motor has a full-load ampere (FLA) rating of 28A. What is the maximum inverse-time circuit breaker size permitted for branch-circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protection?

  • A. 40A
  • B. 50A
  • C. 60A
  • D. 70A

Why D is correct: Per NEC Table 430.52 and Section 430.52(C)(1), the maximum rating for an inverse-time circuit breaker protecting a motor branch circuit is 250% of FLA. Here: 28 × 2.50 = 70A. Because 70A is a standard size listed in NEC Section 240.6(A), no rounding to the next standard size is needed. Candidates often select 60A (too low) or miss that 70A is itself a standard size.


How to Read Your Score

The passing threshold is 70% — 63 out of 90 questions. On your first practice attempt, treat your score as a diagnostic snapshot, not a verdict. A first score in the 50s tells you where your gaps are, not that you will fail the real exam.

Use topic-by-topic results deliberately. If you score below 70% in Motors and Controls or Grounding and Bonding — each worth 8 items — those gaps have an outsized effect on your total. A single weak topic in an 8-item section can cost you 3–4 points toward the pass threshold.

Scoring in the 70–75% range on a first practice attempt is encouraging but not a signal to stop studying. Practice questions drawn from a 573+ item pool will surface code sections and calculation types the free exam's smaller pool cannot. Candidates who pass comfortably on exam day typically score consistently above 80% across multiple full timed attempts, not just once.

After each scored attempt, sort your wrong answers by topic. Work that topic in the NEC, then attempt another full exam to test retention. The 270-minute time limit is generous for most candidates, but only if you are not stopping to look up basic definitions mid-exam.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Misreading units in calculations. The Service and Feeders section uses VA, kVA, and amperes interchangeably across questions. Forgetting to divide by 1,000 when converting VA to kVA — or applying a metric prefix incorrectly — drops otherwise correct calculations into wrong-answer territory.

Using the wrong table. Motors and Controls questions live and die by NEC Table 430.52 (protective device percentages) and NEC Table 430.250 (FLA values). Confusing these, or applying Table 310.12 conductor ampacity values without adjustment factors, produces plausible but incorrect answers.

Skipping steps in multi-step problems. Branch Circuits and Conductors and Cables questions frequently require two or three sequential steps: find base ampacity, apply temperature correction, apply bundling adjustment factor. Candidates who stop after step one consistently choose a distractor the question bank is designed to include.

Pooling hazardous location rules. In Special Occupancies, Class I Division 1 and Division 2 requirements differ in critical ways — wiring methods, sealing requirements, and permitted equipment. Treating both divisions as identical costs points on all four Special Occupancies items.

Virginia regulation questions. Standards of Practice, Standards of Conduct, and Renewal and Reinstatement items are sometimes dismissed as "easy." They require precise knowledge of contractor class monetary thresholds and reinstatement deadlines — details that do not appear in the NEC and require separate study.

Running out of specific code recall on Grounding and Bonding. With 8 items dedicated to grounding and bonding, vague familiarity with the topic is not enough. Electrode types, GEC sizing, and bonding jumper identification questions are specific enough that partial knowledge leads to consistent misses.
