Administration General Regulations
Key Concepts
Scope and existing work - The code applies to erection, installation, alteration, repair, relocation, replacement, addition to, use or maintenance of plumbing systems. Exception: detached one- and two-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses) not more than three stories high with separate means of egress, and their accessory structures, comply with the International Residential Code (Section 101.2). - Additions, alterations, renovations or repairs related to building or structural issues are regulated by the International Existing Building Code (Section 102.2.1). - Devices or safeguards required by the code shall be maintained in compliance with the edition of the code under which they were installed; the owner or owner's authorized agent is responsible, and the code official may require reinspection (Section 102.3).
Plumbing Fixtures
Key Concepts
Minimum number of fixtures (Section 403.1, Table 403.1) - Fixtures are provided in the minimum number shown in Table 403.1, based on actual use of the building or space; occupant load is determined by the International Building Code. - Theaters and other buildings for the performing arts and motion pictures: water closets 1 per 125 male, 1 per 65 female. - Restaurants, banquet halls and food courts: water closets 1 per 75 male and female.
Fixture calculations (Section 403.1.1) - To determine the occupant load of each sex, the total occupant load shall be divided in half. - Fractional numbers from applying the Table 403.1 ratios shall be rounded up to the next whole number. - For multiple occupancies, the fractional numbers for each occupancy shall first be summed and then rounded up.
Water Supply and Distribution
ICC G27 Master Plumber with Gas (2018 IPC/IFGC) — 9 questions, 9% of the exam
Key Concepts
Water service and separation - The water service pipe shall be not less than 3/4 inch in diameter (IPC 603.1). - Where the building sewer is not constructed of materials listed in Table 702.2, the water service and building sewer shall be horizontally separated by not less than 5 feet of undisturbed or compacted earth. The separation does not apply where the bottom of the water service pipe, located within 5 feet of the sewer, is not less than 12 inches above the highest point of the top of the building sewer, or where a crossing is sleeved to a point not less than 5 feet horizontally from the sewer centerline on both sides (IPC 603.2). - Potable water service pipes shall not be located in, under or above cesspools, septic tanks, septic tank drainage fields or seepage pits (IPC 603.2.1).
Sanitary Drainage
Key Concepts
Slope of horizontal drainage piping - Horizontal drainage piping 3 inches to 6 inches in diameter requires a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot (Table 704.1). - Where drainage piping is upstream of a grease interceptor, the slope shall be not less than ¼ inch per foot (2-percent slope) (Section 704.1). - Computerized drainage designs must still use the slopes in Table 704.1 (Section 713.3.2).
Stack base connections - Horizontal branches shall connect to the bases of stacks at a point located not less than 10 times the diameter of the drainage stack downstream from the stack (Section 704.3). - Sump/ejector discharge connecting into horizontal drainage piping must enter through a wye fitting into the top of the piping, located not less than 10 pipe diameters from the base of any soil stack, waste stack or fixture drain (Section 712.3.5).
Plumbing Vent Requirements
Key Concepts
- Purpose of venting (901.2): The vent piping must permit admission/emission of air so that any fixture trap seal is not subjected to a pressure differential of more than 1 inch of water column (249 Pa). Traps and trapped fixtures must be vented by one of the methods in Chapter 9 (901.2.1).
- Vent terminal location (903.5): An open vent terminal shall not be located directly beneath any door, openable window or other air intake opening of the building or an adjacent building, and shall not be within 10 feet horizontally of such an opening unless it is 3 feet or more above the top of the opening.
- Wall terminations (903.6): Not less than 10 feet from a lot line and not less than 10 feet above average ground level; not under an overhang with soffit vents; protected against birds/rodents.
- Frost closure (903.2): Where the 97.5-percent outdoor design temperature is 0°F or less, vent extensions through a roof or wall shall be not less than 3 inches in diameter, with…
Traps, Interceptors, and Separators
2018 International Plumbing Code, Chapter 10
Key Concepts
Fixture traps and dimensional limits (IPC 1002.1, p. 124) - Each plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap. A fixture shall not be double trapped. - Vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches (610 mm) — a maximum. - Horizontal distance shall not exceed 30 inches (762 mm), measured centerline of fixture outlet to centerline of trap inlet. - Exception 2: a combination fixture may use one trap where one compartment is not more than 6 inches (152 mm) deeper than the other and the waste outlets are not more than 30 inches (762 mm) apart. - Exception 3: a grease interceptor serving as a fixture trap per manufacturer's instructions may serve a single fixture or a combination sink of not more than three compartments, where vertical distance fixture outlet to interceptor inlet does not exceed 30 inches and developed length of waste pipe from the most upstream fixture outlet to the interceptor inlet **does…
Storm Drainage
2018 IPC — Chapter 11 Storm Drainage
Key Concepts
General requirements (Section 1101) - Rainwater from roofs and storm water from paved areas, yards, courts and courtyards must drain to an approved place of disposal; for one- and two-family dwellings, and where approved, storm water may discharge onto flat areas such as streets or lawns provided it flows away from the building (1101.2). - Storm water shall not be drained into sewers intended for sewage only (1101.3). - Conductors and the building storm drain are tested in accordance with Section 312 (1101.4). Pipe size shall not be reduced in the direction of flow (1101.5). Fittings per Table 706.3, and they must not obstruct or retard flow (1101.6). - Roofs are designed for the maximum possible depth of ponded water, assuming all primary roof drainage means are blocked (1101.7). - Cleanouts are required in the storm drainage system per the sanitary cleanout provisions; exception: subsurface drainage system (1101.8). Backwater valves per Section 714 (1101.9).
