Key Concepts

Slope minimums by covering (memorize as a set) - Asphalt shingles: 2:12 or greater; double underlayment required from 2:12 up to 4:12 (1507.2.2). - Clay and concrete roof tile: 2 1/2:12 (21-percent slope) or greater; double underlayment from 2 1/2:12 up to 4:12 (1507.3.2). - Metal roof panels: standing-seam systems 1/4:12; lapped, nonsoldered seam with applied lap sealant 1/2:12; lapped, nonsoldered seam without lap sealant 3:12 (1507.4.2). - Metal roof shingles: 3:12 (1507.5.2). - Mineral-surfaced roll roofing: shall not be applied below 1:12 (8-percent slope) (1507.6.2). - Slate shingles: 4:12 or greater (1507.7.2); two fasteners per slate (1507.7.6). - Wood shingles: 3:12 (1507.8.2). Wood shakes: 4:12 (33-percent slope) (1507.9.2). - Photovoltaic shingles: not less than 2:12 (1507.17.2); listed and labeled to UL 1703 (1507.17.6). - Built-up roofs: design slope not less than 1/4:12 for drainage, except coal-tar built-up roofs at not less than 1/8:12 (1-percent) (1507.10.1).

Underlayment, ice barriers, flashing - Ice barrier (two cemented layers of underlayment or self-adhering polymer modified bitumen) extends from the lowest edges of all roof surfaces to not less than 24 inches inside the exterior wall line; detached accessory structures with no conditioned floor area excepted (1507.1.2). - Two-layer alternative underlayment attachment: metal or plastic cap nails, nominal cap diameter not less than 1 inch (1507.1.1, Exception 3). - Asphalt shingle double-underlayment method: 19-inch starter strip at the eave, then 36-inch sheets lapped 19 inches (Table 1507.1.1(2)). - Drip edge: underlayment over drip edge at eaves; drip edge over underlayment at rakes; adjacent segments lapped not less than 2 inches; fastened at not greater than 12 inches on center (1507.2.8.3). - Metal flashing: corrosion resistant, thickness not less than 0.019 inch (No. 26 galvanized); required at wall/roof intersections, gutters, changes in slope or direction, and roof openings (1503.2.1). - Base flashing: 0.019-inch corrosion-resistant metal or mineral-surfaced roll roofing weighing not less than 77 pounds per 100 square feet (1507.2.8.1). - Open valley metal lining: not less than 24 inches wide (1507.2.8.2, Item 1). - Crickets/saddles required on the ridge…

Kansas Roofing Contractor/Subcontractor Exam — 2018 IBC Chapter 15 / 2018 IPC Chapter 11

Key Concepts

Roof drainage and scuppers - Secondary (emergency overflow) roof drains or scuppers are required where roof drains are required and the roof perimeter construction extends above the roof so water will be entrapped if the primary drains allow buildup for any reason (IBC 1502.2, p. 341; IPC 1108.1). - Scuppers used for secondary drainage shall not have an opening dimension of less than 4 inches (102 mm), and shall be sized to prevent ponding depth from exceeding the design value of Section 1611.1. The flow through the primary system shall not be considered when locating and sizing scuppers (IBC 1502.3, p. 341). - Scupper openings shall be not less than 4 inches in height and have a width equal to or greater than the circumference of a roof drain sized for the same roof area (IPC 1106.5, 1108.3). - Secondary drain systems are sized per Section 1106 using the same rainfall rate as the primary system; primary flow is disregarded (IPC 1108.3). - Where primary and secondary drains are a single manufactured assembly, the inlet and outlet for each drain shall be independent (IPC 1108.1). The secondary system's end point of discharge must be separate from the primary (IPC 1108.2). - Roofs shall be designed for the maximum possible depth of ponded water with all primary drainage assumed blocked; that depth includes the height of water above the secondary inlet needed to achieve the required flow for the design rainfall rate of Section 1106 (IPC 1101.7). - Roof drains shall conform to ASME A112.6.4 or ASME A112.3.1 (IPC 1102.6). Siphonic roof drains/systems are designed per ASME A112.6.9 and ASPE 45 (IPC 1107.1). - Gutters: exterior gutters and leaders must be noncombustible or not less than Schedule 40 plastic pipe on buildings other than Group R-3, private garages and buildings of Type V construction (IBC 1502.4, p. 341). - Main trap: leaders/storm drains connected to a combined sewer must be trapped — an individual trap on the branch serving each conductor, or a…

Kansas Roofing Contractor/Subcontractor Exam (ICC KGP, 2018 IBC)

Key Concepts

Recover vs. replacement - Roof replacement must include removal of all existing layers of roof covering down to the roof deck (Section 1511.3). Exception: where the existing assembly includes an ice barrier membrane adhered to the roof deck, that membrane may remain in place and be covered with an additional layer of ice barrier membrane in accordance with Section 1507 (Section 1511.3, exception). No similar allowance exists for base sheets, insulation or other underlayments. - Roof recover is prohibited (Section 1511.3.1.1) where: 1. the existing roof or roof covering is water soaked or has deteriorated to the point it is not adequate as a base for additional roofing; 2. the existing covering is slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile — regardless of condition or number of layers; or - the existing roof has two or more applications of any type of roof covering. When recover is prohibited, the job becomes a roof replacement under Section 1511.3 (tear-off to deck).

Recover allowances (Section 1511.3.1) - Item 2: Complete and separate roofing systems, such as standing-seam metal roof panel systems, may go over existing coverings only where designed to transmit roof loads directly to the building's structural system and not rely on the existing roofs and roof coverings for support. - Item 3: Over existing wood shake roofs, only metal panel, metal shingle, and concrete and clay tile roof coverings are permitted, applied in accordance with Section 1511.4. - Item 4: A new protective roof coating may be applied without tear-off over an existing protective roof coating, metal roof panel, built-up roof, spray polyurethane foam roofing system, metal roof shingles, mineral-surfaced roll roofing, modified bitumen roofing, or thermoset and thermoplastic single-ply roofing.

Roof recovering over wood shingles/shakes (Section 1511.4): where the new covering creates a combustible concealed space, the entire existing surface shall be covered with gypsum board, mineral fiber, glass fiber or other approved materials securely fastened in place.
