How to Prepare for the Kansas Roofing Contractor/Subcontractor (ICC KGP, 2018 IPC/IBC) Exam

Start with the books. This is an open-book exam, so the references on the bulletin's list are your main study tool. Get the editions the bulletin names.

Learn where things are. Read the table of contents and the index of each book until you know where every major subject lives. On test day, finding an answer fast matters more than memorizing it.

Highlight the sections you use most. Check the bulletin's rules on tabs and markings before you add any.

Spend most of your time on the biggest topics. Types of Roofing Material and Application and Fasteners, Flashings, Drainage, and Scuppers make up 63% of the exam.

Take timed practice exams. The clock trains you to find answers at the pace the real exam needs: about 3 minutes per question.

Aim to pass more than once. One passing score can be luck. Several in a row means you're ready.

Where to get them:

On Test Day

  • Go through the whole exam first. Answer every question you know and bookmark the ones you don't. Every exam lets you come back to bookmarked questions, but some lock the questions you've seen once you take a break, so work your bookmarks before any break.
  • Then go back to your bookmarks and work them out.
  • Don't let one question eat your time. You have 3 hours for 60 questions, which is about 3 minutes per question.
  • Before you finish, answer anything you skipped. A blank can't earn a point.

Study Tips

Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.

A little anxiety before an exam is completely normal — acknowledge it instead of fighting it. If you feel yourself spiraling on a question, pause and take a few slow breaths to reset. If your test center allows a short break, use it; just remember the clock usually keeps running.

Reading the material cover to cover usually isn't enough to pass. This is a multiple-choice exam, and multiple choice rewards practice — the more questions you work through under real conditions, the more the terminology and question style become second nature.

Sample Kansas Roofing Contractor/Subcontractor (ICC KGP, 2018 IPC/IBC) Practice Questions

These questions come from our practice question bank, each with its answer and reference.

Sample 1 — Re-Roofing

Question: As an alternative to conventional underlayment, a minimum 4-inch-wide strip of self-adhering polymer modified bitumen membrane complying with ASTM D1970 may be applied over all joints in the roof decking, with an approved underlayment applied over the strips. This alternative is limited to projects with design wind speeds less than how many mph?

  • A. 100 mph
  • B. 140 mph
  • C. 120 mph
  • D. 130 mph

Correct Answer: C

IBC 1507.1.1, Exception 2 permits the 4-inch-wide ASTM D1970 membrane strip over deck joints with an approved underlayment applied over the strips for design wind speeds less than 120 mph.

Sample 2 — Types of Roofing Material and Application

Question: You are fabricating sheet metal valley flashing for a natural slate shingle roof. What is the minimum required width of that valley flashing?

  • A. 11 inches
  • B. 20 inches
  • C. 24 inches
  • D. 15 inches

Correct Answer: D

IBC 2018 Section 1507.7.7 requires flashing and counterflashing for slate shingles to be sheet metal, with valley flashing not less than 15 inches wide and a minimum uncoated thickness of 0.0179 inch zinc-coated G90.

Reference: IBC 2018 Section 1507.7.7

Sample 3 — Fasteners, Flashings, Drainage, and Scuppers

Question: On a commercial reroof, the building's leaders and storm drain discharge into a combined public sewer that also carries sanitary waste. What trapping arrangement is required?

  • A. A cleanout at each conductor in place of a trap
  • B. No trap, because storm water is not sanitary sewage
  • C. A backwater valve installed at each roof drain body
  • D. Individual conductor traps or one main storm drain trap

Correct Answer: D

IPC 2018 Section 1103.1 requires leaders and storm drains connected to a combined sewer to be trapped — either an individual trap on the storm water drain branch serving each conductor, or a single trap in the main storm drain just ahead of its connection to the combined sewer. Leaders connected to a building storm sewer are not required to be trapped.

Sample 4 — Administration and General Requirements

Question: You are installing a concrete tile roof in a Kansas county where the average daily temperature in January is 25°F or less and ice commonly forms along the eaves, causing water backup. Under these conditions, the metal valley flashing underlayment must be solidly cemented to the roofing underlayment (or a self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen sheet installed instead) on roof slopes less than:

  • A. 12 units vertical in 12 units horizontal
  • B. 3 units vertical in 12 units horizontal
  • C. 4 units vertical in 12 units horizontal
  • D. 7 units vertical in 12 units horizontal

Correct Answer: D

Per IBC 2018 Section 1507.3.9, in areas where the average daily temperature in January is 25°F or less, or where there is a possibility of ice forming along the eaves causing a backup of water, the metal valley flashing underlayment shall be solidly cemented to the roofing underlayment for slopes under seven units vertical in 12 units horizontal (58-percent slope), or a self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen sheet shall be installed. The 3:12 threshold in the same section triggers the separate requirement for a 36-inch-wide valley underlayment.
