Test Day Tips
Start with a quick pass through the whole exam. Answer every question you're sure about and bookmark the rest. Every exam lets you return to bookmarked questions, so nothing is lost by moving on.
Then come back to your bookmarks and work through them one at a time. Keep an eye on the clock: you have 2 hours for 40 questions, which is about 3 minutes per question. Before you finish, make sure every question has an answer. A blank can't earn a point.
Study Tips
On an open-book exam, the winners aren't the smartest people in the room — they're the fastest at finding answers. Buy the required book, practice with it open, and tab and highlight each section the first time a question sends you there. Learn the index and table of contents until you can land on any topic in seconds. That speed is what separates a pass from a fail.
On an open-book exam, work through every question once: answer the ones you know and skip the ones you don't. Then go back to the ones you flagged. You can bookmark questions for later review, just like on our exams — and don't sink too much time into any single question. The clock is still running.
Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.
Don't choose a word simply because it looks familiar. On difficult questions, you may not recognize several words in the answer choices—but that doesn't mean they're invented. Test writers only use real words. If you recognize the words in only one answer choice, focus on that choice and evaluate it carefully. If it's correct, great. If not, eliminate it. Every answer choice you eliminate improves your odds, even if you end up guessing among the remaining options.

- A. 1 AWG
- B. 2 AWG
- C. 1/0 AWG
- D. 2/0 AWG
Correct Answer: C
NEC 2017, 310.10(H)(1) permits parallel conductors only in sizes 1/0 AWG and larger, except for the limited control-power and high-frequency applications of Exception No. 1 and the engineering-supervised 2 AWG/1 AWG neutral allowance of Exception No. 2.

Sample 2 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Introduction
Question: In the dual system of units used throughout the Code, how are measurements presented?
- A. SI units first, inch-pound in parentheses
- B. Inch-pound units first, SI in parentheses
- C. Trade size designators in place of both
- D. Whichever system the authority specifies
Correct Answer: A
NEC 90.9(A) establishes SI (metric) as the system of preference, and 90.9(B) requires that SI units appear first with inch-pound units immediately following in parentheses. Per 90.9(D), compliance with the numbers shown in either system constitutes compliance with the Code.

NEC 2017, 250.68(C)(1) permits interior metal water piping that is electrically continuous with a metal underground water pipe electrode and located not more than 1.52 m (5 ft) from the point of entrance to the building to extend the connection to an electrode. Piping beyond 5 ft may not be used except under the industrial/commercial/institutional exception.
