3 questions

Sample 1 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 6

Question: You are laying out the electrical rough-in for a new single-story strip retail building that is accessible to pedestrians. The building contains three tenant spaces, and each tenant space has two separate pedestrian entrances. What is the minimum number of sign/outline lighting outlets that must be provided for this building?

  • A. 1
  • B. 6
  • C. 3
  • D. 2

Correct Answer: B

NEC 2017, Section 600.5(A) requires at least one outlet in an accessible location at EACH entrance to EACH tenant space for sign or outline lighting system use. With three tenant spaces having two entrances each, a minimum of six outlets is required. Each such outlet must be supplied by a branch circuit rated at least 20 amperes that supplies no other load.

Sample 2 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 2

Question: According to NEC 240.6(B), what is the ampere rating of an adjustable-trip circuit breaker that has external means for adjusting the current setting but does NOT have restricted access?

  • A. The minimum setting possible
  • B. The nominal rating printed on the breaker label
  • C. The setting at the time of installation
  • D. The maximum setting possible

Correct Answer: D

According to the National Electrical Code Handbook (Page 151), Section 240.6(B), the rating of adjustable-trip circuit breakers having external means for adjusting the current setting (long-time pickup setting), not meeting the requirements of 240.6(C) for restricted access, shall be the maximum setting possible.

Sample 3 — 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA – Chapter 1

Question: In a copper-clad aluminum conductor, the copper must form a minimum of what percentage of the cross-sectional area of a solid conductor or of each strand of a stranded conductor?

  • A. 25 percent
  • B. 5 percent
  • C. 15 percent
  • D. 10 percent

Correct Answer: D

NEC 2017, Article 100 defines Copper-Clad Aluminum Conductors as conductors drawn from a copper-clad aluminum rod in which the copper forms a minimum of 10 percent of the cross-sectional area of a solid conductor or each strand of a stranded conductor.
