Test Day Tips
Start with a quick pass through the whole exam. Answer every question you're sure about and bookmark the rest. Every exam lets you return to bookmarked questions, so nothing is lost by moving on. One catch: some exams lock the questions you've already seen once you take a break, so clear your bookmarks before any break.
Then come back to your bookmarks and work through them one at a time. Keep an eye on the clock: you have 4 hours for 100 questions, which is about 2 minutes 24 seconds per question. Before you finish, make sure every question has an answer. A blank can't earn a point.
Study Tips
Take this practice exam several times. The goal is to consistently clear your exam's passing score — often around 70–75% — so passing feels routine before you walk into the real test.
Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.
Give yourself at least three to six weeks. Use your exam's candidate bulletin as your roadmap for what's tested, and spend your time on finding-it-fast skills over rote memorization. In practice, aim for three clean passes at 80% or higher — setting your practice bar above the real cut score gives you a comfortable margin on test day.
On an open-book exam, the winners aren't the smartest people in the room — they're the fastest at finding answers. Buy the required book, practice with it open, and tab and highlight each section the first time a question sends you there. Learn the index and table of contents until you can land on any topic in seconds. That speed is what separates a pass from a fail.

Give these a try. They come from our practice question bank, each with its answer and reference.
Sample 1 — Exhaust and Ventilation Systems
Question: A grease duct serving a Type I hood includes a horizontal run 90 feet long before it turns up to the rooftop fan. What minimum slope must that horizontal duct have toward the hood or an approved grease reservoir?
- A. 1/2 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (4.2-percent slope)
- B. 1/4 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (2-percent slope)
- C. 1 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (8.3-percent slope)
- D. 1/8 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (1-percent slope)
Correct Answer: C
IMC 2018 Section 506.3.7 requires Type I duct systems to slope not less than 1/4 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (2 percent) toward the hood or a grease reservoir; however, where horizontal ducts exceed 75 feet in length, the slope shall be not less than 1 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal (8.3 percent). A 90-foot horizontal run therefore requires the 8.3-percent slope.

Sample 2 — Chimneys and Vents
Question: You are routing the vent connector for a Category I furnace through an unconditioned space that is located within the exterior walls of the building and is neither an attic nor a crawl space. Single-wall metal pipe is permitted for that portion of the connector only where the local 99-percent winter design temperature is not lower than which value?
- A. 17°F
- B. 5°F
- C. 0°F
- D. 32°F
Correct Answer: B
IFGC 2018 Section 503.10.2.2 requires vent connectors for draft-hood-equipped or Category I appliances located in or passing through attics, crawl spaces or other unconditioned spaces to be listed Type B, Type L or equivalent insulated vent material. The exception permits single-wall metal pipe within the exterior walls of the building in areas having a local 99-percent winter design temperature of 5°F (-15°C) or higher, in unconditioned spaces other than attics and crawl spaces. The 32°F value applies to uninsulated single-wall pipe used outdoors under Section 503.7.2.

Sample 4 — Fuel Supply Systems
Question: Where the gas supplier delivers gas at a pressure greater than 2 psi to a piping system serving appliances designed to operate at 14 inches w.c. or less, each overpressure protection device must be adjusted to limit the gas pressure to each connected appliance to what maximum pressure upon failure of the line pressure regulator?
- A. 1 psi
- B. 14 inches w.c.
- C. 2 psi
- D. 5 psi
Correct Answer: C
Per IFGC Section 416.2.1, where piping systems serve appliances designed to operate with a gas supply pressure of 14 inches w.c. or less and overpressure protection is required, each overpressure protection device shall be adjusted to limit the gas pressure to each connected appliance to 2 psi or less upon a failure of the line pressure regulator.
