A Simple Plan to Prepare for the Kansas Journeyman Mechanical (ICC KGG, 2018 IMC/IFGC) Exam
Step one is the books. This is an open-book exam, so the references on the bulletin's list are what you'll work from, while you study and in the exam room. Get the editions the bulletin names.
Step two is learning your way around them. Go through each book's table of contents and index until you know where the major subjects are. You don't need to memorize the books. You need to find things in them.
Step three is marking them up. Highlight the sections you use most. Check the bulletin's rules on tabs and markings before you add any.
Step four is timed practice. Our practice exams run on a clock, so you get used to the real exam's pace: about 3 minutes 36 seconds per question.
Along the way, give the most time to the biggest topics. Administration General Regulations and Appliances & Mechanical Equipment make up 44% of the exam.
The last step is consistency. Keep practicing until you pass several practice exams in a row. That's the signal you're ready.

Where to get them:
On Test Day
Go through the exam at a steady pace. On your first pass, answer the questions you know and bookmark the ones you don't. Every exam lets you come back to bookmarked questions, but some lock the ones you've seen once you take a break, so finish your bookmarks first.
On your second pass, return to your bookmarks one at a time. You have 3 hours for 50 questions, which is about 3 minutes 36 seconds per question, so keep moving and don't let one question hold you up. Before you finish, answer anything you skipped. A blank can't earn a point.
Study Tips
Don't let the clock rattle you. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when facing a page full of questions, a racing mind, and a ticking clock. Stay calm and stick to your planned pace. If you've been monitoring your progress consistently, you'll have enough time to finish. Even if the final minutes feel rushed, as long as you have only as many questions remaining as you should at that point, you're exactly where you need to be.
This practice exam mirrors the real Pearson VUE exam — the same number of questions, drawn from the same topics. Practicing in that format now means no surprises when you sit for the real thing.
Reading the material cover to cover usually isn't enough to pass. This is a multiple-choice exam, and multiple choice rewards practice — the more questions you work through under real conditions, the more the terminology and question style become second nature.
On technical questions, don't get bogged down in unfamiliar terminology. If you don't recognize a term, you're unlikely to figure it out on the spot—acknowledge it quickly and move on. Use the surrounding context, answer choices, and familiar terms to guide your reasoning, but don't linger on any single difficult question.
If you're stuck on a problem, don't waste time—move on. Before you do, however, quickly eliminate any obviously wrong answer choices. Even ruling out one or two options significantly improves your odds of guessing correctly. Eliminate what you can, make your best guess, then move on.
Sample Kansas Journeyman Mechanical (ICC KGG, 2018 IMC/IFGC) Practice Questions
Here are a few questions from our practice question bank, each with its answer and reference.
Sample 1 — Exhaust and Ventilation Systems
Question: A journeyman is sizing the mechanical exhaust ventilation system for a repair garage used to service compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled vehicles. The repair bay has a volume of 4,800 cubic feet. What is the minimum required exhaust ventilation rate?
- A. 600 cfm
- B. 400 cfm
- C. 240 cfm
- D. 480 cfm
Correct Answer: B
IMC 502.16.2.1 requires the exhaust ventilation rate for repair garages serving lighter-than-air fueled vehicles (other than hydrogen) to be not less than 1 cfm per 12 cubic feet of room volume: 4,800 ÷ 12 = 400 cfm.
Reference: IMC 2018 Section 502.16.2.1
Sample 2 — Chimneys and Vents
Question: A journeyman is installing a listed vented wall furnace served by a Type B-W gas vent. Measured from the bottom of the wall furnace, what is the minimum vertical height at which the vent must terminate?
- A. 5 feet
- B. 12 feet
- C. 10 feet
- D. 8 feet
Correct Answer: B
Per IFGC 503.6.6, a Type B or L gas vent must terminate not less than 5 feet in vertical height above the highest connected appliance draft hood or flue collar, but a Type B-W gas vent must terminate not less than 12 feet in vertical height above the bottom of the wall furnace. The 5-foot figure is the near-miss value that applies to Type B and L vents.

- A. Yes, as long as the valve is within 6 feet of the appliance
- B. Yes, if the valve is a listed quick-disconnect device
- C. Yes, if an access panel is provided
